News Blues

For decades the world has depended on news outlets to inform the people of

important events happening around the country and even the world. But, is the media

changing what is shown to the people? Recently there has been big talk on Fake News.

Fake News is not news people disagree on but can be news that is inaccurate or false

information that is purposefully put out to misinform the people targeted. (What is Fake

News?) Leading to the reader being misinformed and not educated on the topic.

Although the news was initially created in order to spread information easily among the

masses, it has now morphed into a different kind of monster that is based on biased

opinions and influenced by outside pressures and is no longer a factual based

enterprise.

Even though Fake News has been around since the beginning of Journalism, it

is now being talked about because of its quick spread due to social media. Journalist

are able to portray whatever they decide. Why are they focusing most of their energy

on celebrity gossip and not important events happening around the world? The main

reason for this is because the readers are fueled by gossip. Studies have been made to

identify that the percent of people that were closely following the news dropped

through the 1980s. This is because the news was very involved on factual news instead
of gossip. The rise in gossip arose in the twenty-first century. This started to boost the

news industry by thirty percent because people were more interested in celebrities

gossip than important events happening through the world. (Curtis Brainard)

Media outlets thrive to boost their views through traumatic attacks on big groups.

Their viewers and readers in is by providing information about terrorist attacks or

dangerous events. It is interesting to see how people come together to grieve through

the sad times and the media takes advantage of the moments to produce big articles of

the events. It is important to show people what is going on through the events and how

it affecting people, but sometimes the media drags it out to bring in more viewers. An

event where this was shown was during the recent hurricanes that affected much of the

United States. The Southeast coast of the United States were all trying to tune into the

news to make sure Hurricane Irma was not going to get to their families. Bringing in

more money for the news outlets. Sometimes different news outlets like Fox News

become very bias through their news giving. They try to implement more news about

the people they agree with. Through the 2016 Presidential Election Fox News did not

hide their support towards Republican candidate Donald Trump. Fox made sure to

display Trump as well rounded human and give him more coverage time than any other

candidate. There is no wrong in showing the better side of a person, but when a news

outlet that is suppose to be reliable and showing individuals the raw side of the news

and is not doing so, they become unreliable. (Seth Ackerman)

The purpose of mass media was to help inform individuals what was going on

around the world. The first example that was given to the people was printing presses.

The first printing press was brought to India. Through the 1960s is when the form news

was given started to change. The internet was a project sponsored by the United States

government to help the military and academic research. The internet was introduced

around the world in the late 90s. It wasnt until the 1980s that a different form of

communicating news was used. Before, newspapers, magazines, broadcast, and

television, were the main way to inform people of what was going on. In the past 30

years the internet has been the main form of transmitting news to different people. It

has been show that is one of the fastest ways to communicate to a large audience. (Dr.

P. P. Shaju)

Social Media didnt make its first appearance until 1997. It was a revolutionary

invention that helped to form how social media is now. In the beginning people were

flabbergasted of the idea to be able to communicate with people round the world so

easily. It was as simple as clicking a button. It slowly transformed into being able to post

your own blogs and instant messages. Posting your own blogs had a big influence on

journalism. The definition of blogs is a regularly updated website typically ran by an

individual or a small group, usually written in an informal style. Blogs made and make it

easy to give people wrong information. Since blogs are mostly ran by one person or
a group of people it is easy to guide the reader into your beliefs. If an individual isnt

aware that the website they are viewing us a blog ran by a random person they

could start to believe everything that is being portrayed on the specific website. Through

the 2016 election this was shown many times. Bias is a big deal when it comes to

social media.

How does Fake News influence the people in America is a big question. Through

some interviews an experiment was conducted. The main topic through the interview

was opinions on the president of the United States, Donald Trump. Figuring out who the

person being interviewed favorite influential person was a drastic criteria in this

interview. Once that was found out it was decided to interview Hannah Spens. When

asked about how she felt about our president she stated, I am still truly hurt of how he

came into office. He is a sexiest man whom is not doing much for our country. I am

disappointed and do not stand for him. The interviewee kept going on and on about

how much she disliked the president. A few moments later a fake interview was pulled

up for her to see. It was involving her favorite makeup artist, Kat Von D.
