information for citizens to secure access to information under the control of public authorities,
in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority,
and whereas the attached publication of the Bureau of Indian Standards is of particular interest
to the public, particularly disadvantaged communities and those engaged in the pursuit of

METHODS OF SAMPLING AND TEST ( PHYSICAL AND

CHEMICAL ) FOR WATER AND WASTE WATER
PART 17 NON-FILTERABLE RESIDUE (TOTAL SUSPENDED SOLIDS)
( First Revision )
[ Ref : Doc : CDC 26 (8849) ]

1. S c o p e Prescribes a gravimetric m e t h o d for t h e d e t e r m i n a t i o n of non-filterable residue. This

m e t h o d is applicable to all types of w a t e r and w a s t e w a t e r .

2. P r i n c i p l e Non-filterable residue is d e t e r m i n e d by passing the s a m p l e t h r o u g h a w e i g h e d filter

and drying the filter at 103-105C or 179-181C. Non-filterable residue is calculated from t h e increase
in m a s s of t h e filter.

3. Apparatus
3.1 Filters One of following may be u s e d .

3.1.1 Gooch crucible 30 ml capacity with 2.1, 2.4 or 5.5 cm d i a m e t e r ( p o r e size 1.2 m) g l a s s

fibre filter disc. ( W h a t m a n GF/C or e q u i v a l e n t . )

Water Sectional Committee, CDC 26; Panel for Methods of Test for Water and Effluents, CDC 26 :

3.1.2 Crucible P o r o u s - b o t t o m silica, sintered glass, porcelain, stainless steel or Alundum crucible
with a maximum pore size of 5 m.

3.1.3 Glass fibre filter disc ( W h a t m a n GF/C or equivalent) 2.1 to 5.5 cm in diameter, pore
size 1.2 m.

3.2 Filtering Apparatus D e p e n d i n g on t y p e of filter u s e d .

3.3 Drying Oven - With a thermostatic control for maintaining t e m p e r a t u r e up to 180 2C.

3.4 Desiccator Provided with a colour indicating desiccant.

3.5 Analytical Balance 200 g capacity a n d c a p a b l e of weighing to n e a r e s t 0.1 m g .

4. P r o c e d u r e
4.1 Preparation of Glass Fibre Filter Disc Place the g l a s s fibre filter on t h e m e m b r a n e filter a p p a r a t u s
or insert into b o t t o m of a suitable Gooch crucible with wrinkled surface up. While v a c u u m is applied,
w a s h t h e dish with three s u c c e s s i v e 20 ml v o l u m e s of distilled w a t e r . R e m o v e all t r a c e s of w a t e r by
continuing to apply v a c u u m after w a t e r has p a s s e d t h r o u g h . R e m o v e filter from m e m b r a n e filter
a p p a r a t u s ( o r b o t h crucible and filter, if Gooch crucible is u s e d ) a n d dry in an oven at 103-105C
for 1 hour. Transfer to a desiccator and w e i g h after half an hour. R e p e a t t h e drying cycle until a
c o n s t a n t m a s s is obtained ( m a s s loss is less t h a n 0.5 mg in s u c c e s s i v e w e i g h i n g s ). W e i g h immediately
before u s e . After w e i g h i n g , handle the filter or crucible filter with forceps or t o n g s only.

4.1.1 If d e t e r m i n a t i o n s are to be carried out at 180C then t h e filter or crucible/filter shall be dried
at 180C.

N o t e If fixed non-filterable residue is to be determined subsequently then silica, Alundum or porcelain

filters should be used. T h e s e should be heated to 550C in the furnace for at least 30 minutes, cooled in the
desiccator and weighed.

4.2 Sample Volume - In p o t a b l e w a t e r s non-filterable residue is usually small. Relatively large volume
of w a t e r is p a s s e d t h r o u g h filter so as to obtain at least 2.5 mg residue. For deciding v o l u m e to be
t a k e n , turbidity values may be taken into c o n s i d e r a t i o n . If turbidity v a l u e s of a s a m p l e is less
than 50 units, filter 1 litre s a m p l e and if turbidity value e x c e e d s 50 units, filter sufficient s a m p l e so t h a t
non-filterable residue is 50 to 100 m g .

4.3 A s s e m b l e the filtering a p p a r a t u s and begin suction. W e t the filter with a small v o l u m e of distilled
w a t e r to s e a t it a g a i n s t t h e fitted support.

4.4 Shake the sample vigorously and quantitatively transfer the predetermined sample volume selected
according to 4.2 to the filter using a graduated cylinder. Remove all traces of water by continuing to
apply vacuum after sample has passed through.
4.5 With suction on, wash the graduated cylinder filter non-filterable residue with portions of distilled
water allowing complete drainage between washings. Remove all traces of water by continuing to
apply vacuum after the wash water has passed through.
4.6 After filteration, transfer the filter along with contents to an oven maintained at either 103-105C
or 179-181C for at least 1 hour. Cool in a desiccator and weigh. Repeat the drying cycle till constant
mass is obtained. Alternatively, remove crucible and filter from crucible adapter, wipe dry from outside
with filter paper and dry at 103-105C or 179-181C in an oven. Cool in a desiccator and weigh. Repeat
the drying cycle till constant mass is obtained.

5. Calculation Calculate the non-filterable residue from the following equation:

Non-filterable residue, mg/l

where
M = mass in mg of non-filterable residue, and
V = volume in ml of the sample.

6. Report Report in whole numbers for less than 100 mg/l and to three significant figures for higher
values. Report the temperature of determination.
7. Precision and Accuracy Precision of the method is about 5 percent. Accuracy cannot be
estimated because the non-filterable residue as determined by this method is a quantity define by the
procedure followed.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This method supersedes clause 7 of IS : 2488 ( Part 1 )-1966 'Methods of sampling and test for
industrial effluents: Part I' clause 12.1 of IS : 3025-1964 'Methods of sampling and test ( physical and
chemical ) for water used in industry' and clause 4 of IS : 4733-1972 'Methods of sampling and test for
sewage effluents ( first revision )'.
