Converting the LBRP into a Norse Pentagram Ritual

The Qabalistic Cross/Cross of Divine Unity

The opening of the origional Pentagram Ritual is done using the Qabalistic Cross. The purpose
of the Qabalistic Cross is to establish the magician as the center of the Universe. It uses the
concept of Adam Kadmon to identify the Microcosm (the magician) with the Macrocosm (the
Tree of Life as a representation of the Universe.) Consider also that in order to construct a circle
you must first establish the centerpoint.

The magician is instructed to draw a cross of light upon his body with the oration Ateh Malkuth
ve-Geburah ve-Gedulah le-Olam Amen, translated in English as Thou art the Kingdom, and the
Power, and the Glory for ever, Amen. The oration is taken from the last line of the Lords
Prayer, spoken in Hebrew to emphasize its correspondence with the Tree of Life.

The first mistake here appears in the wording of the oration. The use of Ateh, thou art
identifies the light with a external power, namely, Our Father. The same idea is expressed at
the end of the oration with Amen, which is notariqon for Adonai Melekh Naamon meaning
Lord, faithful King. It would make much more sense for the magician to identify himself with
that light considering that he is establishing himself (not God) as the center of the Universe in
this ritual.

Because the ritual uses the concept of Adam Kadmon in drawing the cross of light, three of the
five words that make up the oration are names of Sephira which correspond to the appropriate
location on the body: Malkuth, Geburah andGedulah. It would thus make sense to exchange
Ateh thou art with the god-name of Kether, Eheieh, which means I am. This identifies the
magician with the light and provides a Qabalistic link with the appropriate sephira when
touching the forehead.

Amen should alo be exchanged for IAO, a solar formula of resurrection associated with
Tiphareth, which is vibrated over the plexus in Crowleys Thelemic adaptation of the Qabalistic
Cross in the Star Ruby. This change links all five phrases of the oration with the corresponding
sephiroth of Adam Kadmon. The revised oration would then read I am the Kingdom and the
Power and the Glory forever IAO.

When performing this version of the Qabalistic Cross, the magician not only identifies himself as
the center of the universe but also forms a cross of the Elements within his aura. Eheieh is
associated with Air, Malkuth with Earth, Geburah with Fire, and Gedulah with Water. IAO
represents Spirit at the center of the Elemental Cross.

One further note on the Qabalistic Cross. While the original version instructs the magician to
touch the breast when saying Malkuth, modern magicians often touch the groin at this point in
the ritual. The latter method makes more sense, as it fully extends the cross of light over the
whole body. Also, the groin is where the root chakra is found, thus equating it more fully to the
base of the Tree of Life. The crossbars of the cross of light are visualized as extending into
infinity

In our version, the oration is changed to Nee Divini humanive Supra, Sub Terra, Ex Aeternam,
Mortalis E, Unitate Spiritus Sancti, translated in English as Divine Above, Earth Below, From
Eternal, From Mortal, Unity Within." Thus not only identifying ourself as the center of the
universe, that "all is within us as the center of all" as the purpose of the ritual states, but also
works in accordance with the purpose of our ritual in pathworking the union between the
Physical and Spiritual planes.
Therefore, we will not be using the traditional Qabalistic Cross, such as:

Take a steel dagger or knife in the right hand. Face East.

Touch thy forehead and say Ateh (Thou art).
Touch thy breast and say Malkuth (the Kingdom).
Touch thy right shoulder and say ve-Geburah(and the Power).
Touch thy left shoulder and say ve-Gedulah (and the Glory).
Clasp thy hands before thee and say le-Olam(forever).
Dagger between fingers, point up and say Amen

Therefore being very Abrahamic and thus in no way relating to the energies we are working
with. So to convert it into a usable format, we will instead change it to what one might call either
the Necromanic Cross or Cross of Divine Unity. To do this we will, instead preform it like this:

Take your Athame in the right hand. Face West.

Touch thy forehead and say: Nee Divini humanive Supra (Divine Above).
Touch thy breast and say: Sub Terra (Earth Below).
Touch thy right shoulder and say: Ex Aeternam(From Eternal).
Touch thy left shoulder and say: Mortalis E (From Mortal).
Clasp thy hands before thee, Athame between fingers, point up and say: Unitate Spiritus Sancti
(Unity Within).
The Construction of the Circle

Next comes the Construction of the Circle, which in the origional version begins in the East as it
is using energies durived from Sun worship, and uses names of power for the Judeo-Christian or
Hebrew God. Which we, using Nordic energies, will replace these names of power with our own
in like manner. As well, we, practicing necromancy, will begin in the West. Although we will be
starting and ending in different Quarters than the origional, the precession of names will remain
the same, this may be confusing for some of you who are used to directional energies, but we are
using names of power to invoke the circle, not calling quarters, thus the precession must remain
the same.

Before we begin, we must take note of a set of gestures: the Sign of the Enterer and the Sign of
Silence. They come from ancient Egyptian art, and represent the active and passive forms of the
hawk god Horus. The Sign of the Enterer is the gesture preformed when establishing the circle of
power. The circle is erected by proforming the Sign of the Enterer, then drawing the specified
pentagrams in the air. The Sign of the Enterer is the active, representing the warrior god which
gives a direct connotation to our mighty Thor, the great warrior of our people and the protector
of Midgard and mankind. For this we will be converting the sign of the enterer into a "like"
version of the hammer rite like thus:
Stand with your feet parallel, shoulder width apart. Visualize Asgard shining just above your
head. Inhale silently and visualize a bolt of white Lightning coming down through your body
from Asgard above you to Midgard beneath your feet. As you inhale draw down the lightning
and raise your elbows upward and outward, parallel with your shoulders. Hold your hands flat
beside your neck, palms downward, and fingers extended, pointing forward. Suddenly and
forcefully step forward with your left foot, thrust your hands directly forward, and lower your
head between your arms, eyes forward. As you do so exhale silently, visualize the Lightning
raising back up through your body, and project it out through your fingertips, tracing an upside-
down T shape in the air in front of you, while Saying:
"The sign of Thor, the Thunderer, Mighty Champion of Gods and men."

The Circle defines the area to be controlled by the magician and protects that area from
unwanted influences. The space inside the circle, once properly banished through the use of
pentagrams and god-names, is considered to be sacred space within which the magician may
communicate with and manipulate the energies of the Universe.

Traditionally, the circle is warded in each Elemental quarter by a banishing Earth pentagram.
This bias against the element of Earth is based on the misconception that the material world is
evil and inferior to the higher, more spiritual realms. The LBRP only works with one Element
when four Elements are clearly defined.
Therefore, my solution is to use each element in its appropriate quarter. And since we are
invoking and not banishing these energies in our ritual, we will thus be using the invoking
pentagrams of each element. When using four invoking pentagrams, each is visualized in the
color appropriate to the element: yellow for Air, green for Earth, blue for Water and red for Fire.
The circle that unites the pentagrams is drawn in white to represent Spirit, the Element that
combines and unites the other four Elements.

With the four Elements combined in divine union, truly, only the Element of Spirit remains,
itself conterminous with the magician and the center of the circle5. Spirit is the Element that both
combines and unites the other four Elements and must be present to formulate and balance the
Elemental circle of the Elemental quarters.

Four four-letter Hebrew god names are traditionally used as words of power to charge the
pentagrams: YHVH in the East, ADNI in the South, AHIH in the West, and AGLA in the North.

The revised Nordic attribution of the Names of Power to the elemental quarters is as follows:
Odin, consisting of the runes of Othila, Dagaz, Isa and Nauthiz for the Invoking Pentagram of
Water in the West, sir for the Invoking Pentagram of Earth in the North, Buri for the Invoking
Pentagram of Air in the East, and KHGE for the Invoking Pentagram of Fire in the South.
Vibrate the god-names while giving the Sign of the Enterer, and follow with the Sign of Silence.
The first gesture projects a beam of energy into the pentagram, while the second gesture stops
the flow of energy by severing the connection between the magician and the pentagram.

Therefore instead of saying:

Make in the Air toward the East the banishing Pentagram of Air and, bringing the point to the
center of the Pentagram, vibrate the Deity NameYod-He-Vau-He, imagining that your voice
carries forth to the East of the Universe.

The name of power given here is the tetragrammaton, which comes from the Greek
, meaning "[consisting of] four letters"). It is the four Hebrew letters ,
commonly transliterated into Latin letters as YHWH. Which is spelled out as Yod-He-Vau-He
which establishes it as a name of power, invoking the power behind the name. It is one of the
names of God used in the Hebrew Bible. The name may be derived from a verb that means "to
be", "to exist", "to cause to become", or "to come to pass". Therefore, in like manner, we will use
our magickal alphabet of the runes in lue of the mystical alphabet of the Hebrews. For this we
will use the God Odin, consisting of the runes of Othila, Dagaz, Isa and Nauthiz. Making our
name of power invocation like thus:
Make in the Air toward the West the (visualizing it being drawn in blue light) Invoking
Pentagram (since we are invoking the archetypal energies and power of the pentagram instead
of banishing) of water and, bringing the point to the center of the Pentagram, vibrate the Deity
Name O-Thee-La, Da-Guz, Ee-Sa, Nou-Thees, imagining that your voice carries forth to the
West of the Universe.

Likewise instead of continuing in the traditional manner like this:

Holding the dagger out before you, go to the South, make the Pentagram and vibrate similarly
the deity name Adonai ( , meaning "My Lords") is the plural form of adon ("lord"). As with
Elohim, Adonai's grammatical form is usually explained as a plural of majesty.

Go to the West, make the Pentagram and vibrate Eheieh ( , ehyeh aer ehyeh [I am
that I am) is the common English translation of the response that God used in the Hebrew Bible
when Moses asked for his name (Exodus 3:14). It is one of the most famous verses in the Torah.
Hayah means "existed" in Hebrew; ehyeh is the first person singular imperfect form and is
usually translated in English Bibles as "I am" or "I will be" (or "I shall be"), for example, at
Exodus 3:14. Ehyeh asher ehyeh literally translates as "I Am Who I Am." The ancient Hebrew of
Exodus 3:14 lacks a future tense such as modern English has, yet a few translations render this
name as "I Will Be What I Will Be," given the context of Yahweh's promising to be with his
people through their future troubles.

Go to the North, make the Pentagram and vibrate AGLA ( )is a notariqon (qabalistic
acronym) for Atah Gibor Le-olam Adonai,"You, O Lord(s), are mighty forever." .
Return to the East and complete your circle by bringing the dagger point to the center of the first
Pentagram.

We will instead, continue in this manner:

Holding the Athame out before you, turn to the North, make the (visualizing it being drawn in
green light) Invoking Pentagram of Earth and vibrate similarly the deity name sir (pronounced
ICE-ear; Old Norse for multiple gods).

Turn to the East, make the (visualizing it being drawn in yellow light) Invoking Pentagram of Air
and vibrate Buri. Since Buri was the first God that came into being from Ginnungagap, which of
course, meaning "gaping abyss", "yawning void" is therefore the primordial void, thus making
him the "Father of all Gods" or the "God of Creation." And since the first came before
time...from the void..."i am" and "i shall be" are the same in the zero point reality outside time
and space. Thus the two (Ehyeh and Buri)are equal and therefore synonymous.
Turn to the South, make the (visualizing it being drawn in ed light) Invoking Pentagram of Fire
and vibrate KHGE (Kha-Gee). Our acronym for Kraftur ertu, Heinu Guir a Eilfu, which is,
of course, Icelandic for "Mighty are you O Heathen Gods Forever".
Turn again to the West to complete your circle by bringing the dagger point to the center of the
first Pentagram. As the point of your Athame reaches the center of the pentegram, visualize the
pentagram glowing with the white light of Spirit.

Immediately after completing the circle, one retreats into the Sign of Silence, which is in the
Qabalistic version, the sgn of Horus, and also a characteristic gesture of the Greek God
Harpocrates, who stands upon the lotus in silence. For us this is a direct connection to Odins son
Vidar (pronounced VEE-dair). Therefore in place of the traditional sign of silence (simply
stepping back and placing the index finger over the lips as if to say "Shhhh"), since Vidar is the
silent Norse God of Vengeance, we will convert it to the Sign of Vidar (which will be to simply
add the gesture of holding the Athame at the waist in your right hand as a sword beginning to be
quietly unsheethed while holding the index finger of the left hand to the lips as in the origional
gesture).

The Invocation of the Archangels/Dwarves

After the circle is constructed, the magician extends his arms in the form of a tau cross and
invokes the Archangels of the Elements in the four directions. The tau cross is a symbol of the
four Elements bonded and separated by Spirit. It is also a reaffirmation of the element of Spirit
that is invoked through the Qabalistic Cross. It is with the authority of Spirit that the magician
invokes the Archangels.

What is the purpose of invoking the Archangels? Some believe that they are the guardians of the
circle, evoked outside to protect it. Yet the circle is already well-protected at this point in the
ritual with banishing pentagrams and vibrated god-names. The real purpose of the invocation is
to solidify the Elemental energies that have invoked durring the Construction of the Circle, with
intellegent beings that have a connection to each.

The Elemental Archangels represent the highest, most spiritualized qualities of the Elements.
When the Archangels are invoked into the circle, the Elemental energies are embodied by
spiritualized Elemental entities that serve to purify, balance, and energize the magician. As he
invokes each Archangelic energy the magician should be able to feel it manifest in the
appropriate quarter. This idea is vividly expressed by Israel Regardie in The Middle Pillar:
The technique is to imagine that the emanation from the archangel penetrates and cleanses the
personality. That is to say, in the east from behind the archangel Raphael should be felt a gentle
wind or breeze, which, permeating the entire body, blows from it every trace of impurity.
From Michael in the south, warmth at first of gentle degree should be felt, increasing in intensity
to a powerful heat that burns and utterly consumes every blemish which troubled the personality.
This purging should be felt as consecrating one to the service of the higher self. The same
technique should be applied to Gabriel in the west, except that one is purified with water, while
in the north one is invested with the stability and fertility of Auriel, archangel of the earth.6

Remember that the magician, who is standing in the form of a tau cross, represents Spirit, the
fifth Element which balances and unites the other four.

Thus in keeping with the energy flow of our ritual and working, we will not be using the
archanges as:

Before me Raphael. (East)

Behind me Gabriel. (West)
At my right hand Michael. (South)
At my left hand Uriel. (North)

We will instead use Elemental energies embodied by beings found in Norse mythologhy. Much
like the story of the archangels being asigned to each of the four quarters in Abrahamic
mythology, when Odin created the world of Midgard from Ymir's body, he appointed four
dwarves to hold up the sky at the four corners. These Dwarves are considered to rule over the
four directions and elements. They are: Nordhri (North), Austri (East), Sudhri (South) and Vestri
(West). Therefore our Quarter nvocations will instead be read as:

Before me Vestri. (remember e are facing West in our ritual, not East)

Behind me Austri. (East)

At my right hand Nordhri. (North)

At my left hand Sudhri. (South)

Of course if you want to be a little more elaborite, you could say something more along the lines
of:
Before me stands Vestri, Mighty Dwarf of the West, Master of the Element of Water, whom
brings forth purification, love and psychic awareness.

Behind me stands Austri, Mighty Dwarf of the East, Master of the Element of Air, whom brings
forth intuition, knowledge and freedom.

At my right hand stands Nordhri, Mighty Dwarf of the North, Master of the Element of Earth,
whom brings forth prosperity, fertility and stability.

At my left hand stands Sudhri, Mighty Dwarf of the South, Master of the Element of Fire, whom
brings forth protection, passion and courage.

The Affirmation of the Circle

The ritual ends with the following oration: Before me flames the pentagram, and behind me
shines the six rayed star. This places the magician between the symbols of the Microcosm
(pentagram) and Macrocosm (hexagram). The intent is to symbolize the unification of the
Microcosm with the Macrocosm, which in turn is a symbol for the Great Work, the goal of all
magick.

This affirmation also has implications toward our pathworking; "Before me flames the
pentagram" makes the statement that the path or paths before or ahead of us is that of the Spirit
embodied by the pentagram. Again relating to our work is the statement that it is "flaming" with
divine fire or the "Holy Spirit" which is imply a refrence to the presence of the divine.

The latter part of the statement, "Behind me shines the six rayed star", this is the hexagram. This
is a statement that we have completed our work on the astral, embodied by the hexagram, and
that path or paths are now "behind" us on our spiritual journey.

Lastly, this statement establishes us as the central connecting point between the two. We are the
centeral point between the pentagram (spiritual) and the hexagram (astral). This again establishes
us as the center of the universe, as the physical/middle world is connected to both the astral
worlds below on Yggdrasil and the spiritual worlds above, we too stand as the axis point
between the pentagram and hexagram, connected to both yet separate in ourself. Thus in this
statement we affirm ourselves as being both the Microcosm and the Macrocosm. The completion
of the Great Work, thus found within ourselves.
When all of the flaws of the LBRP are corrected and the elements of the ritual are properly
balanced with our Nordic energies, a New Ritual of the Pentagram emerges:

1. Facing West, touch the forehead and say Nee Divini humanive Supra (Divine Above).

2. Touch the groin and say Sub Terra (Earth Below).

3. Touch the right shoulder and say Ex Aeternam(From Eternal).

4. Touch the left shoulder and say Mortalis E (From Mortal).

5. Clasp the hands upon the breast and say Unitate Spiritus Sancti (Unity Within).

6.Stand with your feet parallel, shoulder width apart.

7.Make in the Air toward the West the (visualizing it being drawn in blue light) Invoking
Pentagram (since we are invoking the archetypal energies and power of the pentagram instead
of banishing) of water and, bringing the point to the center of the Pentagram, vibrate O-Thee-La,
Da-Guz, Ee-Sa, Nou-Thees, imagining that your voice carries forth to the West of the Universe.

8 Holding the Athame out before you, turn to the North, make the (visualizing it being drawn in
green light) Invoking Pentagram of Earth and vibrate sir. Imagining that your voice carries
forth to the North of the Universe.

9.Turn to the East, make the (visualizing it being drawn in yellow light) Invoking Pentagram of
Air and vibrate Buri. Imagining that your voice carries forth to the East of the Universe.

10. Turn to the South, make the (visualizing it being drawn in ed light) Invoking Pentagram of
Fire and vibrate KHGE. Imagining that your voice carries forth to the South of the Universe.

11. Turn again to the West to complete your circle by bringing the dagger point to the center of
the first Pentagram. As the point of your Athame reaches the center of the pentegram, visualize
the pentagram glowing with the white light of Spirit.
12. Retreat into the Sign of Vidar by holding the Athame at the waist in your right hand as a
sword beginning to be quietly unsheethed while holding the index finger of the left hand to the
lips.

13. Extend the arms in the form of a cross and say: Before me stands Vestri, Mighty Dwarf of
the West, Master of the Element of Water, whom brings forth purification, love and psychic
awareness.

14. Behind me stands Austri, Mighty Dwarf of the East, Master of the Element of Air, whom
brings forth intuition, knowledge and freedom.

15. At my right hand stands Nordhri, Mighty Dwarf of the North, Master of the Element of
Earth, whom brings forth prosperity, fertility and stability.

16. At my left hand stands Sudhri, Mighty Dwarf of the South, Master of the Element of Fire,
whom brings forth protection, passion and courage.

17. Before me flames the pentagram, and behind me shines the six rayed star

18. Repeat the Cross of Divine Unity (parts 1-5).
