be removed altogether if mosques refused to turn
down the volume.

be an emergency or a disturbance to peoples
lives.

Border controls
O nce again, Bahrain has foiled a high-pro-
file terror plot including assassination
attempts on public figures and targeting three
oil pipelines, all of which have terror links with
Iran (GDN, Nov 16). We have witnessed similar
incidents umpteen times and observed the
seizure of several weapons and bomb-making
materials in the past.
While the security forces and the intelli-
gence units deserve appreciation for uncover-
ing the plots and seizing the weapons, there
seems a question that begs an answer: How
porous is our sea border that the Iranians find
it an easy route to smuggle anything to Bah-
rain despite being under constant patrol?

conned out of money by fraud-
sters selling dubious herbal
treatments.
The GDN first reported in May
that a gang was allegedly duping
shoppers and then threatening vic-
tims with knives when they com-
plain.
However, people continue to part
with their cash after being prom-
ised cures from everything from
baldness to weight loss.
One of the alleged victims,
who asked to be identified only as
Karim, said he was one of around
10 people who now planned to file
a complaint with police.
Last Friday a man approached
me and suggested a medicine for
hair loss, obviously looking at my
baldness, the Indian told the GDN.
I could not understand the name
of the medicine, so he offered to get
it for me and took me to a nearby
shop.
It was a packet of powder called
Safoof Kalonji and it cost me BD3.
He said I had to mix it with one
oil, which was available in a shop
in the suq.
He took me to the shop where a

Car catches fire after causeway accident

A CAR was engulfed in flames on King Fahad
Causeway early yesterday morning.
It happened following an accident, confirmed the
Interior Ministry on its twitter account.
Meanwhile, another vehicle belonging to a female
student at Bahrain University caught fire due to a
short circuit while it was parked in the car park of
the university.
Firemen managed to put out the blaze before it could
spread to other parked vehicles, said the universitys
safety and security head Jaber Al Saud.

The Customs Affairs has opened an office
at the Bahrain International Exhibition and
Convention Centre to streamline measures to
the entry of products to be showed at Jewellery
Arabia, which opens today.
This follows the success of a similar temporary
office at the expo centre last year, Customs
Affairs president Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al
Khalifa said yesterday.
He said that the Customs Affairs deploys 29
personnel who would work in shifts, highlighting

65gm unsalted butter
500gm Stracciatella ice
cream
50gm milk chocolate
Method
1) Place the biscuits in a
thick plastic bag. Twist
the top tightly closed
then bash the biscuits

friends so that he could steal
his cash, a court heard.
The 27-year-old and four
accomplices allegedly mugged
two Bangladeshi victims after
luring them to a car park.
They assaulted them in the
street and stole BD180 before
fleeing, according to prosecu-
tors.

Bangladesh, are now standing
trial at the High Criminal Court
where they are accused of theft
and assault.
I got a call from my friend
and he said he needed BD20 ur-
gently, the 34-year-old victim
said in his statement.
I agreed to give him the
money and he told me to meet
him in a parking lot in Mu-
harraq on August 3.
He arrived with another man,
but as soon as they arrived they
were attacked.
I saw him and four other
men, but they started to beat us
up and I begged them to stop,
added the victim, 34.
I handed over my wallet
and I was shocked that my own
friend had lured me into this
trap.
I then went to a police sta-
tion and told them about my
ordeal.
I did not expect to be
mugged by my own friend.
The alleged mastermind of
the mugging told prosecutors
that he planned the ambush
after losing a large amount of
money through gambling.
However, he claimed the vic-
tims showed up because they
also wanted to gamble.
I was sitting at home

he could join us, so I accepted.
However, I was low on cash
and got the idea of mugging
him and leaving him in the
street because he did not know
where I lived.
I told him to meet me in
a parking lot near my apart-
ment, where my friends and I

CONTRADICTIONS in witness testimonies
have been alleged in the trial of a man ac-
cused of mugging his victims armed with an
axe.
The 27-year-old Bahraini is standing trial
in the High Criminal Court for mugging two
Indian men outside a cold store in Sitra.
His victims, aged 26 and 28, were sitting in
a car outside the cold store when he allegedly
approached them holding an axe and asked
for their identification cards in December last
year.
The alleged assailant then forced the vic-
tims out of the car and threatened to kill them
with the axe if he did not hand over their mo-
bile phones and wallets.
However, defence lawyer Fatima Al Hawaj
argued in court that her client should be ac-
quitted because of contradictory statements
from the victims regarding the weapon used.

ence between a dagger and an axe but one of
them said the defendant was holding a dagger
and the other victim said he was holding an
axe, she said in court.
They come from a country of farming and
agriculture and they should know what is an
axe.
In addition, one of them said my client
was holding an axe behind his back but then

to attack him with the axe.
All these contradictions cast doubt on
what really happened and therefore I request
my clients acquittal.
Or at least my client should not be charged
with mugging and assault because there is
no clear weapon he is said to have used and
should be only charged with theft.
The court adjourned the trial to December
31 for a ruling.
The defendant previously denied the
charges and said he had gone to the cold store
to buy some food.

EXPERTS helping autistic children
in Bahrain should integrate aquatic
therapy in their daily routines, it was
urged.
Bahrain has more than 10 institutes for
special needs children but none of them use
aquatic therapy to help autistic people.
The method was highlighted during a
film festival in Bahrain that screened Swim
Team, a documentary based on swimming
coach Michael McQuay and his wife Maria
who established special Olympics swim-
ming team Jersey Hammerheads eight years
ago, inspired by their son Michael.
Mr McQuay from New Jersey, US was
in Bahrain to discuss the documentary, his
team and how he encouraged a group of
autistic children become independent indi-
viduals and to compete on the world stage
through the use of aquatic therapy.
According to studies conducted world-
wide aquatic therapy which refers to treat-
ments and exercises performed in water for
relaxation, fitness and physical rehabilita-
tion benefits children with autism in stress
relieving.
It also enhances the childs quality of life
and improving productivity, besides social
and sensory skills.
Representatives from Alia for Early In-
tervention and RIA Institute, who attended
the screening of the documentary at the
Building Bridges film festival, said they
were inspired by the spirit of the documen-
tary.
As I watched the movie I was reminded
of the facts on aquatic therapy which can
help children with autism, said Alia for
Early Intervention psychiatrist Dr Tawfiq
Narouz, who is also a Fellow of American
Psychiatric Association.

alleviate anxiety and increase attention span.
There is a big possibility for Bahrain to
explore in this direction, either as govern-
ment or as in centres like Alia.
Teaching autistic children to swim can
go hand in hand with the other trainings that
we give them and the results will be good.
The movie being based on real life inci-
dents is inspiring as we see that some chil-
dren went to college and got married it is
definitely worth giving it a try in Bahrain.
His comments were supported by RIA
Institute founder Christine Gordon, who de-
scribed the movie as a celebration of life.
Swimming is a unique sensory experi-
ence, enabling many different skills in one
is good, she explained.
Passion
My son is not a swimmer but knows how
to stay afloat and loves being in the water.
The film itself to me is a celebration of
life yes we struggle, yes life is tough, but
its also good and very rewarding.
Mr McQuay, in an exclusive interview
with the GDN, expressed his willingness to
support Bahrain in establishing a swim team
for autistic children.
My wife and I started eight years ago and
today we have 17 athletes who are all in var-
ious swimming teams and competing with
normal children, he said.
It was not easy and we took it one day
at a time.
If we can do it, Bahrain can do it as well.
I am ready to help the country with this as I
would love to see one such team being set
up here.
It is about finding the right person with
passion who believes in the cause and these
children and thats where you can take off
from.
All children are gifted and these children
are trying to talk to us and all we need to do
is open our ears and listen.
One of the stars of the Jersey Hammer-
heads is Mr McQuays 21-year-old son
Michael, who is among the three principal
subjects of Swim Team, the documentary by
award winning television news and docu-
mentary producer Lara Stolman.
Swim Team is Ms Stolmans first feature
documentary film for which she fetched the
New York Women in Film and Television
Loreen Arbus Disability Awareness grant.
They told me that my son will nev-
er walk, talk or change his own pants,
and now he is doing his dream job of
working for four days at a zoo and he
swims six days a week, added Mr McQuay.
This movie gives parents hope I am not
here to preach what to do with your children,
but it helped me and my wife, it can help
others too.
I am being an ambassador, going out to
the world and telling parents not to enter-
tain their children with an iPad and not to
be overprotective, but to help them grow up
to take care of themselves and lead an inde-
pendent life.
We touched a lot of peoples lives
through this documentary and we hope to do
the same in Bahrain.
Autism has no race, class, colour or creed
it can affect the rich or the poor alike and
this movie is emotional and an eye-opener
to parents.
Twelve films, including award-winning
documentaries and movies on the refugee
crisis, were screened during the second edi-
tion of the festival.

continuity while also driving
forward economic diversifica-
tion and stimulating demand
for goods and services across
the non-oil economy.
EDBs chief economic
adviser Dr Jarmo Kotilaine
told a media briefing on the
findings of the report that
growth figures had once
again surprised on the upside

According to him, the nation-
al economy is also increasingly
benefiting from important struc-
tural reforms.
During the first half of this
year, initiatives such as pioneer-
ing crowdfunding regulations, a

icy (designed to help organisa-
tions take advantage of cloud
technology), have dramatically
improved Bahrains business
environment.
Bahrain is successfully posi-
tioning itself at the forefront
of innovation at a time when
the growth prospects for the
Gulf economies are becoming
increasingly tied to productiv-
ity.
As a result of this and the
opportunities being created by
economic transformation across
the region, we are seeing bigger
and brighter names attracted to
Bahrain.
A pipeline of infrastructure
projects worth over $32 billion
is either under construction or
scheduled for the near future in
the kingdom, says the report.
According to MEED Projects,
the active pipeline of infrastruc-
ture projects in Bahrain stood
at $83.6bn in October, up some
21.4pc year-on-year (YoY).
Trade volumes have gener-
ally remained broadly in line
with last years readings, said
Dr Kotilaine.
The total value of non-oil
exports during the first eight
months of the year was $4.72bn.

The base effect means that if
GDP growth as seen in the cor-
responding period of the pre-
vious year was too low, even a
smaller rise will arithmetically
give a high rate of growth now.
On the other hand, if growth
had risen at a high rate in
the corresponding period of
the previous year which also
recorded a high level of GDP,
a similar absolute increase in
growth now will show a lower
rate now, he explained.
The EDB is forecasting
growth in the non-oil sector at
3.3pc next year and 2.7pc in
2019, with real GDP growth
seen at 2.7pc and 2.2pc respec-
tively.

to victory
NUWAIDRAT and Bahrain
Club were both victorious last
night during the 11th week
of action in the Zain Bahrain
Basketball League.
Nuwaidrat scored a comfortable 97-
66 win over Hidd Club while Bahrain
Club registered a rare triumph over Isa
Town in yesterdays other game.
Both games were played at Zain Bas-
ketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.
In Nuwaidrats win, the victors had a
strong start, scoring 50 points in the first
half, including 30 in the second period,
helping them take a commanding 50-31
advantage at the break.
They continued to outscore their ri-
vals in the second half but were not able
to pull away much further.
Nuwaidrat settled for the 31-point
win, one of their biggest of the season.
Seven-foot, one-inch Serbian centre
Mile Ilic top scored for Nuwaidrat with
31 points. He also had nine rebounds
and seven big blocks.
Ebrahim Albasri chipped in with 26
including an impressive six three-point-
ers to go along with five assists and three
steals.
Hussain Lulu paced Hidd with 26
points in the losing effort.

in the loss.
Bahrain Club came away with only
their third win of the season after 10
games. Isa Town suffered their eighth
loss, also in 10 outings.
League action continues tonight with
another two games on the cards. At 6pm,

Former Wimbledon champion Novotna dies

after she died at the age of 49
following a long battle with cancer.
Novotna, who won the Wimble-
don title in 1998 when she defeated
Frances Nathalie Tauziat in the final,
died on Sunday in her native Czech
Republic surrounded by her family, a
WTA statement said.
She played in two other Wimbledon
singles finals, losing to Steffi Graf in
1993 and to Martina Hingis in 1997.
