Communication skills in the classroom is extremely important. It is
important for your classroom as well as your relationship with I have created a classroom

The texts identifies three communication skills for addressing student conflict directly and I think I
am most comfortable with Constructive Assertiveness. I work at the Washington State University
Childrens Center and I use Constructive Assertiveness every day. I will discuss the rules in
expectations in my classroom, so my students will know and understand what is expected of them.
My students will understand that I expect the same respect that I am giving them. Although I am
comfortable using Constructive Assertiveness if it is needed. My students will be well aware of the
rules and I hope that I will not need to do this very often. One of the skills that I need to work on is,
Problem Solving. At times I find this difficult and especially during direct student conflict. If there is a
conflict or issue, I find myself worried and flustered. This is the reason why I think I need to work on
problem solving. I have realized that I need to take a step back and look at the situation in their
eyes. I find myself making rash decisions which is not fun for everybody. Overall, communication
skills are key in the classroom and need to be practiced.
