Goals:
1. Students will make the connections between the Greek Assembly, the Roman Senate, and
Representative Democracy.
2. Students will understand that 2 consuls were chosen to lead Rome.
3. Students will understand how the 2 social classes of Rome operated.
4. Students understand how the Plebeians gained more power and influence in Rome, despite being poor.
5. Students can understand the benefits of being a Roman soldier, such as land being a reward for their
service.
6. Students will identify the positives of being a part of the Roman Empire including becoming a Roman
citizen, and being protected by the Roman Empire. Students will understand that these aspects made
their citizens loyal to them.
7. Students will understand that Romes economy was entirely based off of the success of their military.
8. Students will understand how Romes architecture made them successful.
Objectives:
1. Students will be able to:
a. Make connections between Greece and Romes government
b. Identify parts of the Roman government diagram
c. Define plebeian and patrician
d. Identify Romes military strategy of conquering peoples and lands and then incorporating them
into their Empire
e. Write a successful paragraph that identifies three reasons their civilizations will be successful.
2. Standards:
1.2: The historical eras, individuals, groups, ideas and themes in regions of the Western (Eastern for
Core Knowledge) Hemisphere and their relationships with one another.
4.1: Analyze the interconnectedness of the United States and other nations.
(P) Demonstrates knowledge of vertical and horizontal alignments of the grade or subject area.
Areas of Celebration: Lesson Plans are thorough and well thought out.

Activity Details Time and Interaction

Warm-Up The warm-up will include 3 5-7 minutes

students share their answers in
their table groups. Tell students
that if their partner has something
they dont, they need to add it.
Transition into having a class

share out something your partner
had that you didnt?

Go over Map Questions Transition into map questions. T-S


Have students hold up their 5-10 minutes
map questions and a grading
utensil. Put map questions on the
Smartboard and go over the
answers with the students.

and have full attention to the front
of the classroom. Explain that we
are going to grade in groups by
playing a competitive game of
Snake. Have students count
off in groups of 6. Explain that
the key to the questions is listed
next to their groups snake.
Explain that all students must have
the right answer in the group in
order to build their snake. This
means students can correct their
answers, but cannot move on until
every member has the correct
answer. Explain there is a prize,
but that the teacher will be
checking the winning teams
answers to ensure they are
correct.

Have students open their ISN to 15-20 minutes

students hold a grading utensil

questions. Explain to students that
we are going to play a round of
Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
in order to grade our Military
questions. Explain the importance
of putting the correct answer into
their homework. Divide students in
half. There should be 4 tables per
group. Tell each table to nominate
at least 3 people who would be
brave and courageous enough to
give the answers. Tell students
you will know they are ready
when they are contemplatively
tapping their hands. Explain that
each group has: 1 phone a friend
save, and 2 50/50 saves. Explain
that a phone a friend save is when
you decide to ask a group member
for the answer and that a 50/50
save is when the teacher gives
you two choices, only one of which
is correct. Also explain this is a
game in which there is no talking.
If talking, teams lose points.

Paragraph for Civilization Pass out the Civilization S-T


Paragraph Planning Sheet. Ind. Student work
Gather all students attention by Remainder of class.
having pencils down and eyes

through the directions quietly.
Then, have students each read a
step and explain what that means.
Annotate the prompt together.
Then, have students choose which
3 areas of their civilization they
would like to focus on and have
them highlight those in the prompt.
Continue through the directions
and then allow students to begin
their planning on their essays.
