Grade: 9th
English Standards:
9-10.RL.4 : Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text,
including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of
specific word choices on meaning and tone.
9-10.RI.6: Determine an authors point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how
an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.
9-10.SL.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely,
and logically such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization,
development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and task; use
appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
9-10.L.5: Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and
nuances in word meanings. a. Interpret figures of speech (e.g., euphemism,
oxymoron) in context and analyze their role in the text. b. Analyze nuances in the
meaning of words with similar denotations.
Objectives:
SWBAT recall and explain what a symbol is
SWBAT find symbols in the text, Bone Gap, and assign a meaning
SWBAT give reason for their symbols using higher level thinking skills
SWBAT support the claims they make about the symbol and meaning they have
chosen
SWBAT respectfully agree or disagree with their peers opinions on the symbols
chosen

Materials Needed:
The novel, Bone Gap
Puzzle pieces with symbols printed on them
Notecards for exit tickets
Writing utensil

Lesson Breakdown:
Beginning of Class (5 minutes)
Students will revisit what a symbol is with a quick class discussion
Teacher will explain what higher level thinking answers look like
Teacher will explain activity to students
Students will get into groups of 3
Activity (10 minutes)
Students will match puzzle pieces to their chosen symbol and meaning. While
students are matching, they will be discussing in their groups what their
symbols mean and why.
Students will have blank puzzle pieces that they will have to create their own
meaning for a symbol provided on the puzzle pieces.
Discussion (7 minutes)
Students will stop discussing their symbols and meanings within their groups
Students will select one symbol and meaning from their group that they want
to share aloud to the class
Students will go around the room and share one match they made with the rest
of their class
Students will be encouraged to discuss their opinions, ask questions, and
engage with the text as a whole group
Exit Ticket (3-5 minutes)
The following will be projected onto the board:
In 2-3 sentences, how does recognizing symbols help you in real life?
*Think advertisements, books, the news, art, etc.
Students will write their answers on the notecards provided and hand them to
me when they are finished.
