Preparation What preparation is needed?

of materials I will need to have all materials ready ahead of time prior to the activity. Any worksheets that
and we will be doing will already be printed ready to go. Tables will be set up for groups of 5 at
environment each table.

What materials will be used?

Smartboard,
IPad
Cd player
Crayons, markers, pencils for students to write with
Chart paper
Photo cards for visuals.
Sea shells, pom poms, marbles, plastic animals, slime
How will the learning environment be set up? Tables will be set up with materials ready to go.
Children will be called to the tables from the carpet once weve done our circle time. I will
explain to the children what lesson we will be learning and introduce the topic.
Instructional Procedures:

To begin the lesson, I will explain to the students that we will be learning about our sess. I will ask the children
what they know about their 5 senses asking open ended questions and recording their answers. I will let the
children know that some the activities we do will have them split up into groups of 5. Then we will come together
as a class and discuss our findings/discoveries. I will have journals available for children to record their findings by
either drawing what they see or writing. For those who struggle with writing or have any kind of disability, I will
have an iPad available. This will have a communication app that can help them understand new vocabulary. I will
have photo cards available for visuals and sticky notes for those who wouldnt want to use a journal.

Day 1: (smell)
First 10 minutes. I will introduce our lesson. We will start off learning our 5 senses with a video from pbskids.org Sid
the science kid. The next 20 minutes children will split up into small groups. There will be different scents hidden
around the room. Each child will be expected work together to find the scents. As they locate the different scents they
will record their findings. I will have chart paper available to make a graph chart about the different things the kids
smelled. In this lesson there will be a lot of opportunities for us to use graph charts.
Day 2: (touch)
First 10 minutes the teacher will review the lesson they have been learning about the five senses. She will have
mystery box ready to explore. The next 20 minutes: Each child will put their hand in the mystery box. They will not be
able to look in the box, but can only guess whats inside by using their hands to touch and feel. There will be several
odds and ends in the mystery box. For example, Scarves, marbles, sea shells, slime, pencils, paper clips, plastic
animals. The last 10 min: The teacher will record what the children thought was in the mystery box. Then she will
reveal what was inside.
Day 3: (Hear)
The first 10 minutes, will have the teacher reviewing the topic they have been learning. She will be asking open-ended
questions. The next 20 minutes the teacher will have a couple of CD with different sounds. Children will close their
eyes and listen to the different sounds playing. They will be asked to describe the sounds they are hearing. The
teacher will record their answers and save them for their portfolios.
Day 4: (Taste)
The first 10 minutes the teacher will describe the activity they will be doing. The next 20 minutes the children will be
split up into their groups of 4. They will be given a variety of different foods and flavors. The children will use their
sense of taste to try the different foods. Each child will be blind folded and will guess what the food is just by tasting.
(We will make sure that there arent any food allergies first!) The children can work together in their groups to help
give hints for their classmate to guess. Then for the remainder of the 10 minutes left we will make a graph chart of
the foods they guessed. If they liked them or not, etc.
Day 5: (see)
The first 10 minutes the teacher will have children review what they know about the five senses. We will talk about
what we have enjoyed so far in this lesson and what they would want to learn next time. The next 20 minutes, the
teacher will have children split into small groups of four again. Each table will have different objects, pictures, gems
and magnifying glasses to observe the different objects. They will observe and describe what they see. They will write
down or draw their findings. The teacher will ask them open ended questions to help them explain what they are
seeing.

Extension
www.pbskids.org offers many different resources for teachers and parents. They have a really fun video Sid the
science kid I sense game.

Differentiated Instructional Support:

If a child is gifted or advanced, I would have that child be in charge of helping students who may struggle with the
reading and writing. I would probably even have them be in charge of helping me write down what children say on
the chart paper. Some challenges that could occur would be children not getting a long in their groups. If need be
those children could be separated.
