Materials Needed:
7 blank pieces of paper to hang on different areas of the walls in the classroom
pen/pencil
tape
scissors
7 copies of Becoming Facebook Friendly: Social Media and the Culturally Relevant
Classroom article by Joanne E. Marciano

Lesson Break Down:

Beginning of Class (5 minutes)
Students will revisit article assigned for homework
Students will discuss article with a partner and collaboratively determine a 1-5
sentence passage that they feel represents the overall idea of the article, or a
section of the text that they most related to
Activity (10 minutes)
Students will cut out the excerpt they select and tape it next to one of the 7 pieces
of paper on the walls (2 minutes)
Students will begin at their excerpt with their partner and take notes on whatever
they discuss about the excerpt. Then they will each move in different directions to
the next excerpt and discuss the new excerpt with a different partner and write
down what they talk about. Students will receive one minute to talk about each
excerpt. This will repeat until each student has been to every excerpt on the wall
(8 minutes)
Discussion (7 minutes)
Students will stop rotating once they reach their initial excerpt
Will go around the room while each pair shares out what the excerpt was and the
different responses that it received
Students will be encouraged to discuss their opinions, ask questions, and engage
with the text as a whole group
Exit Ticket (3-5 minutes)
The following will be written on the whiteboard:
o One thing you realized/learned/discovered about one of the articles that
you hadnt thought of or didnt know before
o One thing you liked about this activity
o One thing you would change about this activity
Students will come up to the board and write an answer to one of the
statements/questions on the whiteboard and write their name next to their answer
(this is how they will receive exit ticket credit)

* The article that we are discussing, explains the importance of incorporating social media sites
such as Facebook into our classrooms as a means for allowing our students to reach out to one
another for assistance on assignments and college readiness. Because of this, I would have a
class Edmodo page for each of my classes, which is basically a Facebook site that would allow
my students to receive any assistance they may need in regard to my class.

Homework:
I will take pictures of each of the excerpts and papers with notes on the walls and post
those pictures on the Edmodo class page
Students will post one question and one response to any of the pictures (this will give
them homework credit)
