Observations on Decomposition A0
The breakdown of parent activity to child activities is kept track of via an
indented list

A0-Operate a Food Manufacturing Enterprise

A1- Manage Sales and Orders
A2- Plan for Manufacture
A3- Manufacture Product
A4- Control Finished Goods

I/O of parent activity are inherited by the child activity(3-6 children/ parent)
Presence of several activities in the same level leads to an activity flow
relationship represented by a staircase pattern
Connecting arcs are used to illustrate relationships between activities
Mechanisms are not always shown at this level

Node numbering
Bundling: The specifics of information is bundled until it is necessary
to explicitly describe them (production schedule and recipe)
Tunneling: used when it is not convenient to show all I/Os controls
and mechanisms at every level (Material Returned to Vendors). It may
represent an arrow
From a hidden source that did not appear in the parent activity

To a hidden destination where it does not appear explicitly

Observations on Decomposition A31

Elemental (lowest level) nodes should give a clear conceptual
understanding of the activities
A narrative describing the activity may be appropriate:
Node A311, Confirm Validity of Shipment - When a delivery truck arrives at the
receiving dock, the receiving clerk is responsible for clearing the material for
unloading. He first compares the paperwork that comes with the shipment (bill
of laden) with the enterprises purchase order that is referenced on the Bill of
Laden. Therefore, two required information inputs to this function are the bill of
laden and the corresponding purchase order. If the material on the shipment
corresponds to the purchase order, the shipment is accepted. If no such
purchase order exists, the shipment is refused.

Process of Model Development and

Validation
Individuals in the organization have different perspectives on the
processes useful at various levels of model development
Graphical and easy-to understand IDEF0 formalism supports the
iterative model development process
Informal vs. formal organization
Forms and reports as valuable sources of information in model
development
Different terms describing the same entity and its impact on data
management process
Importance of narrative
