EEE 308 Practical

Experiment No. 1 Matric Number.........................

SPEED CONTROL ON SINGLE PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR

AIM:
To conduct a test of speed control on a given single phase induction motor and to plot
its performance characteristics using a varying voltage method.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

Table 1 shows the apparatus and equipment needed for this experiment

Table 1 Apparatus list

PRECAUTIONS:

1. The auto transformer is kept at minimum voltage position.

2. The motor is started at no load condition.
3. All connections are checked to be tight.
4. Make sure the motor is in a balanced position

PROCEDURE:
1 Connections are done as per the circuit diagram shown in Figure 1
2 The DPST switch is closed and the single phase supply is given.
3 Attach a small piece of laser focus reflecting mark to the side of the rotor if a laser
tachometer is to be used or place the tip of the tachometer to a flat surface longitudinal
to the surface of the rotor of the machine to be tested
4 By adjusting the variac the rated voltage is applied and the corresponding no load
values of speed is noted down. If the wattmeter readings show negative deflection on
no load, switch of the supply & interchange the terminals of current coils (M & L) of
the wattmeter. Now, again starting the motor (follow above procedure for starting),
take readings.
5 The procedure is repeated till rated current of the motor or for several AC voltage
levels (like 12 readings).
6 The auto transformer is brought to the minimum voltage position, and the DPST
switch is opened.

1. Populate the Table 1 above and plot a graph showing the relationship between the
supply voltage (V) to an induction motor and its speed (N) in RPM.
2. Derive a formula for your generated plot, hence determine the slope.
