Detailed Lesson Preparation Guide

Elementary Education
Name: Camila Portocarrero

Title: I am special and you are too

Grade: Kindergarten

Concept/Topic: Diversity

Time Needed: 40-50 minutes

Note: A detailed lesson plan is specific enough for another teacher to read and teach
effectively. There should not be any question regarding what to do or how to do it.

Backward Design Approach: Where are you going with your students?

Identify Desired Results/Learning Outcome/Essential Question:

The goal is to broaden students minds on how everyone is around us is different. This includes both

physical and personal or emotional differences a person might have towards certain situation. This

lesson will allow the students to further understand that each of us is different and unique in our own

way. Moreover, the students will also be able to look at the different children from all over the world

and see how similar there are regardless coming from different countries through the read aloud.

Ensuring Lesson supports district and state goals

NCSCOS Standards:

K.C.1.1 Explain similarities in self and others.

1.01Describe how individuals are unique and valued.

1.02Identify different groups to which individuals belong.

Key Ideas and Details

1. With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

2. With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
Text types and Purposes

2. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in

which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

Comprehension and Collaboration

2. Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media

by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not

understood.

Assessment Plan:

I will assess the students by their participation during the discussion time as well as their behavior

during the entirety of the lesson. I will also be able to see their participation and assessment by seeing

how they work on their flags and the way they present their flags during the final discussion time as a

group.

Meeting the student where they are:

Prior Knowledge/Connections:

Students are expected to know what feelings are and the different types of feelings one might

experience. The students should also be able to recognize physical differences and have some

knowledge of people from different parts of the world. They should understand that, though we might

look different, we are similar in the way we respond to external stimulation such as having the same

feeling other people get when they fall and hurt themselves. It is also important to note that students

should understand that we are similar if we have some of the same likes as well as dislikes. Furthermore,

students will be able to make connections by understanding that they can be similar to other people,
however, they are still unique in their own way because we do not share all the same of our similarities

and disliked with others.

Lesson Introduction/Hook:

I will introduce this lesson by doing a read aloud. The book I will be reading is called Whoever you are

by Mem Fox. This book has several illustrations which portray children from different parts of the

country. The students will become engaged in the lecture by looking at different places around the

world and seeing how different they are from their homes. Futhermore, the students will also take part

in discussion about what makes themselves unique and this will allow the student to present more

about themselves to their classmates. We will also have a special talking stick that the students will

pass around if they want to share something about themselves with the class. Kindergartners enjoy

sharing about themselves, therefore having time during the beginning of the lesson to share one thing

about ourselves and making connections with their other classmates will make them excited in order to

prepare their own flags.

Heart of the Lesson/Learning Plans

Differentiation/Same-ation:

This lesson makes it accessible to all students because it is a lesson that is focused on who they are as a

person. Through this lesson, students will be able to explore what makes them unique by drawing in

their flags their likes or their dislikes. Furthermore, the students will also be able to recognize how

similar they are to their classmates and will also be able to see that, though they are different in many

ways, they are also similar in many ways with other people around our world. Moreover, giving the

students an equal amount of opportunity for them to share about themselves to their classmates makes

this lesson accessible to all the students.

Lesson Development:

1. First, we will begin the lesson by reading the book Whoever You Are by Mem Fox.

4. After sharing something unique about themselves, I will introduce the activity of making the flag

and I will tell them that we are going to draw the things that we like or that we can do in order

to represent ourselves.

5. After drawing in their flags, the students will then come back to the carpet and share what they

drew in their flags to their classmates.

6. Once we are done sharing our flags, we will learn the song we will use for our march:

a. I am special, I am special

Look at me, look at me

A very special person, a very special person

That is me, that is me

7. After learning the song with the students, we will begin to march around the class with our flags

while singing our march song or anthem.

lead to talking about their heritage with their parents. Parents are encouraged to talk to their students

more about other countries customs as well as talking about their own culture and the customs they

family have.
