Language Art Lesson Plan

Plural Nouns with es vs s
October 27, 2017
First Grade
Objective:
Language Standard 1
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or
speaking.
o Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences (e.g., Three witches fly
away. The cats like milk.).
Materials:
dry erase markers, graphic organizer for each student (22), Word sort for table (6), small poster
for each table that has the rule on it to help the students remember.

Essential Question: What are plural nouns that end with -es?

Personal Objectives: Students will be able to create plural nouns with -es endings and ones with just s
endings and use them in sentences.
Introduction (5 minutes)
Review: Ask students what a noun is and turn to a partner and tell each other what a noun is. Next I will ask
the class what a noun is? Call on a student to tell us what a noun is and an example. Next I will have the
students turn to a partner and tell them what a plural noun is and a singular noun. Lastly, I will ask how we
have made nouns plural in the past. Call on a student to answer the question.
Tell the students that there is another way to make nouns plural. We add es to words that end with x,- s,
-ss, or ch (fox, boss, witch, bus)

Modeling (10 minutes)

Write the following sentences on the board:
The foxes like socks.
The hen met four pigs.
Read the sentences aloud. Guide the students to name the noun and tell if it is singular and plural noun. Have
volunteers come and underline the nouns then have another volunteer that underlines the endings in the
nouns.

Guided practice (5-10 minutes)

Guided practice: We are going to complete a noun sort as a table group. Each table it going to be given 4-5
plural nouns either with es or s endings. As a group, they will have to talk, communicate and help each other
get the words in the correct category. (cards down below, I wont use them all just about 5-6 per table)

Independent practice (20 minutes):

The students will fill out the graphic organizer, they will have to add either s or es to the words and
then color the words that end with -s blue and color the ones that end with -es green. Lastly, they need
to write three plural nouns on the bottom of the paper. At least one that ends with es and one with
s then they can decide what they want to do for the last one.
Once they are done with that early finishers will have to flip their paper over and use one of their
plural nouns in a sentence then draw a picture to go with it.
Once students are done I will bring the class back together and have them share with the class the
nouns they picked and if they used es or s on their nouns.

Assessment: assessing will happen the whole lesson starting off by getting prior knowledge from the students.
When we discuss what a noun, plural noun and how we make a noun plural. Students will be turning in their
graphic organizer for me to check for understanding. At the end of the lesson the students will be given the
opportunity to share their nouns and the sentence they wrote using their nouns.

Accommodations: I will have students talk/work with a partner if needed. I will have plural examples for the
students if needed. I will have an example if students need ideas. For the word sort, I have words that have
words and pictures with the endings in bold to help those who need more support.

Extensions:

Students will flip over their paper and write a sentence using their plural noun. Then illustrate their sentence.
Students could see if any of their spelling words are nouns and make them either singular or plural.
