Research on the rhetorical history of the loteria. Specifically looked into how the card el mundo can represent the idea
macho, one who is strong, unapologetic, and refuses to ask for help. Mexican-American men who try to mirror el
mundo can find themselves alone and in emotional turmoil.

UTSA Mexico Center
Undergraduate research assistant to Dr. Harriett Romo, UTSA. Researched the livelihood and culture of border cities
to prove that San Antonio is an extension of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. The researched is to be published in
Extended Borders and Cultural Citizenship (to be published by Texas A&M Press).

Archival research assistant to Dr. K. Walker. Research conducted was on Eleuterio Escobar and his association with
racism in San Antonio government policies.

Mi Vieja, Mi Hija, and Mi Puta (Manuscript) Fall 2016-Current

Research on border machismo rhetoric and the role of border machismo rhetoric in creating three female roles in
border cities: the vieja, the hija, and the puta.

Archival Research (Laredo Public Library) Fall 2016


Special collections at the Laredo Public Library
Independent research over the history of religion, performance, and patriarchal practices in border cities. Research
conducted was the for the Mi Vieja project. Head librarian of the special collections gave sources on the history of
Laredo and the citys association with Mexican-American culture. Contact with the head librarian is available in the
case future research is needed to be done at the Laredo Public Library: Special Collections.

includes making sure writing samples, personal statements, and CV reflect students ability to research in the field of
rhetoric. Continued research on female roles in border cities also done.

Guided readings on machismo rhetoric and how machismo rhetoric influences borderlands rhetoric. Curriculum also
focused on preparation for a graduate program in rhetoric. Preparing writing samples and personal statements for

Research and readings on the theory, method, and practice of rhetorical theory. Course readings were on some of the
leading scholars in rhetorical theory and praxis. Research project on border machismo rhetoric and how border
machismo rhetoric creates three female roles for women in border cities: the vieja, the hija, and the puta was the final
paper.

Research in digital rhetorics. Coursework covered how digital media can cause outrage in a public sphere. Projects
challenged students risk communication ability when digital media causes outrage in a public sphere. Final project
was a research paper transnational rhetorics and how digital media can cause outrage overseas.
