Question-1:
a) For a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system considering system damping, draw the block
diagram of its linearized classical model. Write down the state equations and the state matrix of
this system. Define all the symbols used.
b) A SMIB system contains cylindrical rotor type 2000 MVA (4 x 500 MVA), 50 Hz., 22kV
generator, as finite machine, having Xd= 0.25 p.u. & H= 5MJ/MVA. Assume the infinite bus
voltage as 1.0 p.u., initial generator terminal voltage as 130 p.u., system impedance between
generator terminal & the infinite bus as j 0.3 p.u. and the p.u. damping torque coefficient KD =
-10. Find the eigenvalues of the state matrix, system damping ratio, damped and undamped
natural freq. of oscillations in Hz and comment on the small signal stability of this system.
Also determine the Right and Left eigen vector matrices and the state participation matrix.
c) Discuss the functions and schematic block diagram of a power system stabilizer(PSS). Why the
speed deviation signal is used as feed back signal to PSS. From the linearized detailed model of
the SMIB system (Hefron Philips model), how do we determine the effective damping and
synchronizing coefficients? In a multi-machine system, how will you identify the generator
most suitable for the placement of PSS?
d) Explain Induction Generator Effect and Torsional Interaction phenomena causing Sub
Synchronous Resonance (SSR) problem. Discuss various countermeasures to SSR problem in
a power system network.

Question-2:
a) Derive the conditions for the reverse action of transformer OLTC (on load tap changer) in a
simple radial system having lossless line feeding resistive load. Repeat it for a line having series
impedance (R+jX) and load of impedance (RL+jXL).
b) With the help of P-V curve, explain the impact of load type, contingency and generator hitting
Q-limit on voltage stability.
c) A simple two bus radial system has a source bus having terminal voltage as 1.0 p.u. and the
load bus having voltage V p.u. and a load of (P + jQ) p.u. connected to it . The system
impedance between the two buses is j 0.25 p.u.. Assemble the NRLF power flow Jacobian in
polar coordinates. Using its singularity condition find the expression for the critical voltage &
maximum real power loading (in terms of )at the saddle node bifurcation or critical static
voltage stability point Also find out eigenvalues of the NRLF power flow Jacobian (polar
coordinates) at the critical voltage stability point.
d) List out the advantages offered by the continuation power flow method over the conventional
NRLF method in assessing the voltage stability. Discuss its predictor and corrector steps. Also
describe the procedure to select the continuation parameter and the weakest bus in this method.
