Alien Names

1. Meet the students in their respective classrooms. (Note: Students normally go from
their respective classrooms to the Art Room at the CPA building 5 minutes
before time. Please anticipate this by going to their classrooms even
before their transit. If unable to, the best recourse is to fetch the students
back to from the Art room to their classroom.)
2. Ask the students to bring out 1 whole piece of pad paper or any available piece of paper of
about the same size. With the paper folded lengthwise, they are to write their name in cursive
(Palmer), adjusting to fill the paper as much as possible. The bottoms of the letters should
always touch the fold of the paper. Any descenders (such as the bottoms of g's, j's or y's) need
to be ignored for this project.
3. Have the students go over the pencil heavily using whatever materials available (e.g., markers,
ball pen or even the pencil itself. They also trace the backside, fold, and trace again on the
remaining side, and eventually have one side with reflecting names.
4. Have the students turn their drawings into some kind of creature. They can draw details with a
pencil and then color sections in with crayons. If a symmetry lesson is desired, tell the students
that whatever color or pattern is made on one side, must also be done on the other.
5. Remind the students to write their names, grade, section and CN at the back. Have the works
collected.

Thank you for substituting. God bless you always.

Keith Haring-esque drawing

Keith Haring was a prominent artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York street
culture of the 1980s. He set out to reach the widest possible audience with his early drawings in the
subways and quickly gained recognition in the art world.
This mural is full of Haring’s trademark action figures, drawn in his simple cartoon style.
