1. Team Forming and Communication: I believe that from the beginning of the project
our approach to the overall team and communication aspect of it was flawed. Right off
the bat, the creation of a PACE Team GroupMe was a very good idea and was integral
in initial communication within the LC as well as getting to know each other better. In
regards to team forming, I dont think we did a good enough job of establishing a clear
line of command early. Later in the project, Pat Nolan and I kind of decided it was time
for us to take charge of the project and become leaders, but at that point, it was still
difficult to get things completed because our credibility as leaders was still subjective.
All-in-all, team forming and communication, mainly accountability, was evident in the
later stages of the project but were absent early on.
2. The Process of Creating the Base of Your Teams SWOT Analysis and Project: I
believed the creation of the base of our teams SWOT analysis was excellent. We divided
up into five different groups and allocated the various responsibilities (strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and editing) to each group. Each SWOT group was
tasked first with completing research on their category and providing the editors with an
outline. The editors then compiled all the work of each group and incorporated them into
a larger, broader outline. The outline was then presented, and each group was instructed
to provide the editors with a rough draft on their category. The rough draft would then be
touched up by the editors, who would also use the information to incorporate into the
presentation PowerPoint.
3. Your Personal Role and Involvement: I believe that my role in the process has been an
integral part to the success of the group. Initially, I volunteered my services as an editor,
since I enjoy and am confident in my abilities in the realm of writing. Naturally, with the
structure I outlined in the second point, the editor group became de-facto leaders of the
entire group, often asking the groups for their progress and submission. I compiled the
various outlines of the groups and created the broader outline, which was essential in
eventually creating the PowerPoint. Later in the project, Pat Nolan and I took initiative
and took charge of the late push that eventually led to the success of our project.
4. Lessons Learned Thus Far: Up until this point, my biggest takeaway from this project
was time management and to a broader extent organization. A semester-long project
seems like it would be no problem to finish, but after a few weeks of kicking the can
down the road, it becomes a lot more time-pressed. I think that if we initially had better
organization and more initiative at the start we could be a bit more successful. Also, I
realized that formal leadership is necessary, no matter how non-confrontational a group
is. Without formal leadership, individual and collective accountability is lost.
5. Potential and Expected Outcome Personal as well as Teamwork Improvements: I
think the late rally and newfound strong leadership will play a pivotal role in the success
of our project. For the presentation, the entire group bought into the idea and we really
rallied around the idea of doing a hybrid of the two options. I think that or innovative
thinking about mixing a formal presentation with a skit will prove to be a clever and
successful way to go about this project. The one weak spot in our project would be the
shortage of statistics, but that is to be expected with smaller, regional companies. For the
paper aspect I believe that we have set ourselves on a track for success. Each of the
groups has submitted the editors a rough draft and it is now all about compiling and
revising. All in all, although I believe that we could have managed our time better and,
consequently, had a better overall project from start to finish, we still managed to
complete an excellent project that I believe is destined for success.
6. Suggestions For a Better Process and Work Efficiencies for Your Future Projects:
My main takeaway for more efficient work processes is leadership. In my future projects,
I will be sure to designate authority and leadership as a collective group at the earliest
time possible. Therefore, like I noted before, accountability is established and a
comprehensive organized schedule can begin to be implemented. Other than that, I
thought that our system was very effective at accomplishing our type of project and I will
be sure to use it again. By dividing everyone into groups and assigning specific tasks to
them, it allows for greater specialization as well as well as greater personal
accountability, since you are reporting to a small group rather than a large one. When it
comes to leadership, I like the idea of a board of people rather than a single one. Some of
the decisions that leaders are faced with requires more than one mind and to have more
than one person helps aid in the decision making process of tough problems.
