During the last four decades Dhaka has

recorded a phenomenal growth in terms of
population and area. The additional population
in coming decades will add new dimensions to
the urban fabric of Dhaka.

Although Dhakas area is less than 1% of the

countrys total land area, it supports about 10% of
the total population and 30% of the total urban
population.

Present Traffic Scenario

Road-based transportation system

3000 km road network (about 7% of land area)
Mixed mode transports on the same roadway

Only 400 kms footpath of which 40% are being occupied illegally

Totally absence of bi-cycle lanes as well as safe walkways for pedestrians

37-km long rail-road passes through the heart of the city but little
contribution to citys transport system

City surrounding potential waterways, but have limited contribution

as well.
About 2% households own a bicycle

More than 200 open markets on the streets and 3000 shopping malls
besides roads without adequate parking provisions

Present Traffic Scenario
Idea of running railways as a social arm of the Railway Network
government rather than as a business
Inadequate government policy - lack of
budgetary provision
Manifested in declining market share,
adverse operating indicator, and reduced
revenue generation.
Contribution to Urban Transport is very small

Tongi-Kamlapur: 23 km and Kamlapur-

Narayanganj: 14 km with 10 stations

60+ trains run daily between Tongi and Kamlapur

at grade level and cause traffic congestion at
several points

28,000 passengers/day @ Kamlapur Station

ICD handles 70,000 containers/year and 2

trains/day run between Dhaka and Port city

outside Dhaka city

Waterways Development

A potential source for

Dhaka City

Prospective circular

Expenditure in Transport Sector
Road development has received the major attention of government.
Sector / Year 1999/00 2000/01 2001/02 2002/03 2003/04
Total USD (millions) 52.9 76.1 58.7 70.7 121.0

Railway (%) 1.04 9.64 10.24 7.07 9.07
Waterway (%) 0 0.26 0.78 1.75 4.22
Consequences of Present Transportation System
Excessive traffic congestion - average speed is 13.6 kmh (2004)

Average cost of transport ranges from about 8% of household income for high
income groups to 17% for low income groups

Cost of congestion and accidents - US$ 520 million/annum

- 1-2% of GDP as 1992 determined by WB
The economic loss associated with health problems range from a low estimate of
US$ 60 million to a high estimate of US$ 270 million, equivalent to 1.7% to 7.5%
of the city's grows product

Air pollution and noise level 4 (in 1-10 scale)

Lead concentration in the city air 10 times higher than the government safety limit
The city's average SPM levels are about 2 times higher than the BD standard of
200 g/m3 in residential areas and are more than 10 times higher than the WHO
guidelines of 120 g/m3 (24 hours) in commercial areas

Road accident fatalities 400/annum- 25 times higher than most industrialized

countries
77 deaths per 10,000 vehicles in Bangladesh while 40 deaths in India & in most
developed countries < 5 deaths per 10,000 vehicles (2.2. in Germany and the
US, 1.4 in the UK, and 1.6 in Japan)
Percentage of road fatalities who are pedestrians is 60% in urban areas
Consequences of Present Transportation System

Potential of Railway is
under utilized

Unplanned city development

What will be the Future of Dhaka?

Population will be 25.41 million in 2025

from 16.70 million in 2011
Total person trips will be 70
million/day in 2024 from 23 million/day
in 2010
