Objectives (must be measurable, use action verbs and include elements of success)
Cite appropriate standards from MA Comprehensive Health Curriculum Frameworks
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Explain all vocabulary words on the communication worksheet by writing them down
throughout the presentation National Standard 7, MCHCF 7.2.

Act out the skills that we went over on how to be a good listener/communicator one time at the
end of the class during an activity National Standard 7, MCHCF 7.2.

Explain the 3 parts of communication after watching a video clip 1 time during the presentation
National Standard 7, MCHCF 7.2.

Special Accommodations (How will the special needs of individual students be met?)
If the students are having a hard time reading the notes on the slides, I will give them a printed
out version of the notes.

I will turn on the subtitles on the videos so if the students are having a hard time hearing them,
they can read what the characters are saying.

Opening (activator/instant activity)


Worlds Worst Listener
1. Students will get with their Revolution sports partners and sit with each other bringing all
of their materials as they will be sitting in those pairs for the rest of class.
2. They will chose who will be student A and B
3. Student B will go first in telling a 5 minute story about something interesting that
happened over the summer.
4. Student A will demonstrate very bad listening skills (no eye contact, interrupting,
ignoring)
5. After the time is up, student A will now tell a story while student B is a very bad listener.
6. After both groups have gotten a chance to play each role, have a class discussion on why
is was difficult to communicate.
a. How did the storyteller feel while their partner was not listening to them?
b. Did the listener actually hear anything from the story?
7. Explain that we are going to be talking about communication today

Procedures Step by step description of teaching strategies/methods/pedagogy to be used.


(Include time frame for each activity, transitions, extensions/adaptations, cooperative learning
techniques jig saw, pair/share, etc.)
1. Worlds Worst Listener Activity and discussion - 15 minutes
2. Communication Presentation/Note Taking - 20 minutes
a. Go over each vocabulary word and accompanying video
b. After each segment make sure to give students enough time to copy down the
notes
c. Also, have small discussions about the video clips and how they demonstrated
each vocabulary word.
3. Revisit Worlds Worst Listener Activity - 10 Minutes
a. Same as the first activity instead this time the students are going to be practicing
good listening/communication skills
b. If there is time left, have each student briefly summarize their partner's story to
show the difference between the bad and good listening skills.
4. If there is time at the end of class, have students get up, stretch, quietly socialize before
the bell rings.

Informal - Through the class discussions make sure that the students are understanding the
concept of each vocab word

Informal - Walk around during the last activity to witness the good listening skills

Closure/Summarizer
1. Revisiting the worlds worst listener activity will show the students the vast difference
between a good/bad listener.

What did you accomplish? How much did the students learn? What would you leave the same
and what might you change in the future to improve this lesson?

This was one of the most fun lessons that I have taught so far. I really enjoyed using video clips
to reinforce the different aspects of communication and the students enjoyed it as well. I am such
a visual learner that for me, videos really help drive concepts home. I think this proved true for
the students as well because when we discussed the topics after I showed them the videos, they
got it. The students met the objectives that I set for class; I know this because of their note sheets
and the discussions that we had. Also, the two worst listener in the world activities looked very
different from the first time we did it to the second time after we discussed what good
communication looks like. In the future I would definitely keep the video clips that I used and I
would shorten the 2 listener activities because we were running short on time at the end of the
lesson.
