Mentor Introduction

Mentor: Dr. Blair Webb

Location: Hall Elementary at GBCHI
Profession: Audiology
Education: Clinical doctorate in
Audiology
Mentorship

I wanted to study audiology at the

GBCHI because I am very interested in
the audiology field and diagnosing
students who have hearing
impairment.

Independent Study Mentorship
The Independent Study Mentorship (ISM) Advanced Academic course is designed for
students wishing to mentor an adult professional in a specific career. With the mentor
and the teacher-facilitator, each student will create a unique plan of study and receive
individual instruction. Students leave the high school campus and go to the mentors
place of business to study with professionals. Students in this course must perform at a
collegiate or professional level.
Requirements:
Document 3 hours of mentorship each week
Document 2 hours of activity work each week
Complete journal entry each week
Complete ISM Professional Portfolio (weebly)
Develop a final project and presentation
Comparing Hearing Healthy and
Hearing Impairment

Hearing aids
Cochlear implants
FM systems
The clinical reasoning behind hearing impairment is interesting to me,
as well as helping students overcome their hearing impairment with
assistive listening devices.
How Sound Travels
Hearing aids
Assistive listening device that mainly helps people with
mild to moderate hearing loss
Not implanted surgically, so can be removed freely
Meant for people with existing hearing and helps refine
sound or make the sound more clear/loud
Can be used by people with sensorineural hearing loss or
conductive, but more useful to people with conductive
Hearing aids
4 main types of hearing aids:
Completely in the canal: least effective, for
people who either have little hearing loss or
dont want the hearing aid to be noticeable
In the canal: somewhat effective, more
visible than the completely in the canal What to Expect. Advanced Hearing Care Center,
In the ear: effective, visible, covers ear canal Web Design , advancedhearingcarecenter.com/what-
to-expect/.
Around the ear: most effective, goes in and
around the ear, one of the most common
Cochlear implants
Surgically implanted assistive listening device
Most effective to those with severe to profound hearing loss
or completely Deaf people
People with sensorineural loss will find the cochlear
implant the most helpful, since sensorineural hearing loss
occurs in the inner ear (the cochlea is located in the inner
ear).
Cochlear implants run through the cochlea and connect to
the brain. The outside portion has one part in the ear,
around the ear, and a portion that connects to the magnet
inside the brain (on the side of the head).
Cochlear Implants

New versions of the cochlear implant offer easier

access by allowing connection to certain types of
cellular devices, and easier connection to FM systems
Since there are many reasons people cant hear, there
are many types of devices to help hearing. In order to
properly function, the whole anatomy of the ear and
the assistive listening device must work together to
function.
Having completely clear hearing where one can hear
at any volume or frequency with the devices has not
been achieved yet
Different types of hearing
and how audiologists help
Hearing impaired people who use either a device to hear
or their own hearing have all different levels of what the Educational Audiologist. Exeter Royal
can and cannot hear. Academy for Deaf Education, Toucan,

itional-support/educational-audiologist.
One person may be able to hear whisper sounds but cant
hear letters like z or v. Another person may be able to
hear an airplane but cant hear the tick of a watch.
This is important to audiologists because their job is to
help people recognize these problems and aid them in
fixing their hearing, as well as providing help after they
have an received assistive listening device.
The new Cochlear Nucleus 7 (a cochlear
implant) can now be connected to any
Current Event apple device for monitoring, controlling,
and customizing the sound of a persons
cochlear implant.
They will also be able to connect to their
phone so they can take phone calls, listen to
music, watch videos, and more.
This relates to my project because most of
the students from 6th grade to 12th grade
have some type of cellular device, and most
of these students use apple devices.
Students who use this new device will now
be able to connect to FM devices in the
classroom, as well as control their cochlear

FM systems
FM Systems are wireless assistive hearing devices
that enhance the use of hearing aid(s), cochlear
implants, and also to assist people who are hard of
hearing but do not wear hearing aids. In particular,
they help people hear over distance or in noisy
environments (Gailey 1).
FM stands for Frequency Modulation
It is beneficial to use and FM system with an assistive
listening device because the FM systems take out
background noises, which making it easier to hear
and understand the speaker
FM systems
Some FM systems are portable, so people with the system
and an assistive listening device can take it anywhere. This
gives them the ability to communicate with anyone so they
are able to fully understand what the speaker is saying

the receiver. The transmitter is what the person/people www.fmhearingsystems.co.uk/product/

talk into, the receiver receives the sound from the
transmitter and sends it to the persons hearing aid
The receiver for hearing aid in the FM systems, which is
used at most schools (the Roger), is called a boot and is
attached to the end of a hearing aid. A boot is only about a
centimeter long and attaches to the end of a hearing aid.
FM systems in the
classroom
In classrooms that have several speakers, the FM
system has a group mode that can be put in the
middle of the room so the person with the
assistive listening device can hear everyone

time, so if there are 2 speakers or teachers, they www.oticon.global/solutions/accessories/amigo-fm.
can both use and FM system and the person with
the assistive listening device can hear them both
FM systems conclusion
FM systems have proven to be effective in the classroom and helpful to the
students learning at school
They have helped children better understand the teacher's instructions,
communicate with their peers and instructors, and be able to participate in
classroom activities
Some of the FM systems have also been proven to help non hearing impaired
students by projecting the teachers voice to everyone across the room
(towers)
Overall, FM systems give hearing impaired and hearing students the
opportunity to participate in class and educate themselves everyday.
Conclusion
I hope to learn more about audiology as a profession and
the importance of assistive listening devices in the
classroom.
Thank you
Thank you Dr. Webb for allowing me to shadow you in your
profession and giving me the opportunity to experience
what an audiologist gets to do.
