Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods

Media:
Overhead projector and screen (for better visibility)- used to show the PowerPoint lesson on
energy, matter, and force, as well as potential and kinetic energy and solar energy.
Computer- will have Kahoot installed and google earth
Students devices- have Kahoot installed
Kahoot- use for a class review quiz at the end of class

Materials:
Marble- Used to roll down a ruler to explain potential and kinetic energy
Ruler- roll marble down, hold it high to explain potential energy is energy stored up and
kinetic energy is the object (marble) in motion
15 science books- used for in class activity energy example. Separate class into three groups
and ask them to stack 5 books on top of each other. Tell them we will be having a race.
3 planks- use planks to put one end on books and one end on the floor to create a ramp
3 toys cars- one car is held by each group at the top of their ramp. Explain that by holding the
car high at the top of the ramp is storing potential energy and when you release the car, it
will move and produce kinetic energy. They will each release their car on the count of three
and race to the bottom.
3 posters- keep the same three groups and create a poster on solar energy. Includes
information on the role of radiation, cloud formation, and role of thermal energy in weather
and examples of each
Coloring pencils- to write information on the poster and color
Construction paper- use to make shapes or pictures and decorate the poster
Scissors- cut shapes and pictures out of the paper
Candy- candy for winners of activities

Methods:
Whole group discussion of energy, matter, force and solar energy- Teacher will use a
PowerPoint to explain each aspect of the lesson and explain each point. Teacher will use
google earth to explore clouds. Teacher will also use a marble and a ruler example to explain
kinetic and potential energy.
Whole group explanation of the activity- teacher will break class into three groups and will
explain the activity and how to successfully complete it.
Students group activity- will break up and build the ramps together and wait for further
instruction once finished. Then teacher will explain more and start the race.
Kahoot- Last activity of class. A quiz to review the material of the day.

Require Learner Participation

Whole group discussion of energy, matter, and force:

The teacher will use a 12 slide PowerPoint that covers the material for the class. It will discuss
the basic sources of energy, their origins, transformations, and uses. It will also cover the role
of the sun and other energy sources and information on potential and kinetic energy. After
the potential and kinetic energy slide, the teacher will use the marble and ruler example to
explain the concept further with a real life example.
The next slides will review the role of solar energy in driving most natural processes within
the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and on Earths surface. It will also discuss earths energy
budget, the role of radiation and convection in the distribution of energy, the motion of the
atmosphere and the oceans, cloud formation, and the role of thermal energy in weather-
related phenomena including thunderstorms and hurricanes. To have a more interactive view
of clouds, the teacher will use Google earth to explore different clouds on earth in different
geographic locations. Teacher will go through the PowerPoint while asking questions to keep
the students engaged.

Whole Group explanation of the activity:

Teacher will tell students they will be having a race. Teacher will then break the class into 3
groups of 6 (which will already be assigned). The teacher will tell the students that they will
need to first stack the five books on top of each other. Then will need to put one end of the
wooden plank on the top of the books and other end on the floor, creating a ramp.

Students Group Activity:

The groups will each build their own ramp and then the teacher will have everyone listen up.
The teacher will hand out the cars to each group and ask one person to hold it at the top of
the ramp but not let go. The teacher will explain how this activity relates to what is being
learned in class about energy. The teacher will explain that the energy being stored up by the
car on the top of the ramp is an example of potential energy. The teacher will then explain
how when they let go and the car races down the ramp, it is an example of kinetic energy
because the object is in motion. On the count of three, the kids will let go of their cars and
the first two cars that make it to the bottom stay for the championship race. Then the first
car down the ramp for the next race wins. That winning group will each get a piece of candy.

Kahoot-
This review quiz will be the last activity of the class. Using Kahoot, students will be tested in
10 questions on material covered in class. The students will use their devices and the teacher
will lead the class using the projector and screen showing the questions up front. The kids
who got all of them right or only one wrong will get candy for doing so well. This quiz will not
be graded but is used more for participation and review.

Evaluate and Revise

Student Performance:
The students will be evaluated on their ability to answer questions asked during class and by
their assessment on the Kahoot quiz at the end of class. The questions asked during class will
assess how well the students picked up the material. If some students are shy and do not like
to raise their hand, the Kahoot quiz will help determine how everyone understood the
lesson. The group activity is also a good way for the students to interact with other students
and work together.

Instructor Performance:
As the students discuss the idea of potential and kinetic energy in the group activity, the
teacher can test how well they are understanding the concept. The questions asked during
the lesson will also allow the teacher to see if the students are following the material well.
The Kahoot quiz will be a final confirmation for the teacher to test how well everyone in the
class understood the material discussed along with the examples showed in class.

Media Performance:
The media used was helpful in introducing the material to the students as well as reviewing
it. The projector was helpful in allowing all students to see the PowerPoint. The Kahoot quiz
was a fun, interactive activity for the students to show what they learned by the end of class.
If the students picked up most of the material taught in class, then the media was used in an
effective way.
