Grade: 8th grade ensemble
# of students: 12
Time: 11:45-12:30
Objectives:
Working in sections, students will be able to sing The Hills of Bethlehem on solfege, with less than five
rhythmic and melodic errors.
Using an internet recording, students will analyze different qualities of Change the World and how it
affects their performance.
Students will be able to sing Change the World with correct style, articulation and dynamic contrast.
Standards Addressed
Pr.3.P Demonstrate an understanding of context in a varied repertoire of music through prepared and
improvised performances.
Pr.4.P Develop strategies to address expressive challenges in a varied repertoire of music, and
evaluate their success using feedback from ensemble peers and other sources to refine performances.
Re.3.I Identify and support interpretations of the expressive intent and meaning of musical works, citing
as evidence the treatment of the elements of music, contexts, and (when appropriate) the setting of the
text.

Beginning
T will do a quick warm up using solfege echo patterns with students
T will have students get out The Hills of Bethlehem
Students will sing through what they know on solfege, then on words
T will break students off into their sections
Students will sit in their sections around the room and figure out the solfege for the remainder of the
song, or for a specific section (Mrs. Goering will decide this)
Students will have 5 minutes to complete it before bringing it back together as a class
Students will perform on solfege
T will fix errors, have students work on solving problem

Middle
Students will sit down in their chairs, and take out Change the World
T will play a recording of the song
Students will say what they like and what they dislike about song
T will ask what aspects of that recording they would like to incorporate in their version
Students will sing through song, having students keep those qualities in mind
T will work on style of Doos in the song
T will work on dynamic contrast
T will teach the rest of the solo to students
Students will perform song again, T will call out students to do solo at various times

End
Students will sing Bring Me Water Silvy
This is their favorite song, and ends the class on a high note if the rest of the lesson does not go
smoothly.
