1. INTRODUCTION
Bathymetry measurements and mapping technology are greatly needed for several
research areas. The map can be used in many aspects such, monitoring of reservoirs,
engineering, and planning. The bathymetry mapping technology is important since the most of
the country area is covered by water. Moreover, mapping process can be used for concerning
of planning management and sustainability of water from natural resources.
This research focus on mapping the bathymery of the shallow water area such as lakes,
reservoirs, rivers, ect. Batrymetry maps in shallow water area is difficult to obtain since the
present available tools only for the deep water such as in ocean. Through this research,
GREATS-BOAT (An Autonomous Small Boat) will be introduced as a new technology for
mapping bathymetry in shallow area and ocean floor.
GREATS-BOAT is a small boat integrated with a systems of remote sensing technology, GPS,
camera and echo sounder. GREATS-BOAT can be used for mapping the surface of shallow
water bottom. Boat navigation is connected with HydroPro software or other software, and the
results of measurement are stored in (x, y, z) data as the variables for bathymetric map.

2. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM TO BE STUDIED

What is the GREATS-BOAT (Autonomous Small Boat) and the function in ocean floor?
Why is the Autonomous Small Boat needed?
How will it to solve the problem of mapping ocean floor?
Why the ocean floor map or bathymetry very necessary?

3. DEFINITIONS OF RESEARCH AIM


The aim of this research is to presents the GREATS-BOAT (An Autonomous Small
Boat) a new technology for bathymetry survey in shallow area such as bathymetry surveying
lakes, reservoirs, rivers, etc. Bathymetry charts in shallow water area is difficult to produce
since the present available tools only for the deep water such as in ocean. It will affect the
industrialized world in surveying and mapping of shallow water or ocean floor.

4. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
4.1 Tools and Materials
Research preparation is the first way for proccess this research, the tools will using is ;
1. Software;
a) Microsoft Office, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel will using help to data
processing and making research report. Microsoft Powerpoint will using for
presentation of this project.
b) Hydropro software or other software, for process of hydrographic data or depth of
the water data.
c) ArcGIS10 software or other software, for use to create Bathymatry map.
2. Tools in field ;
a) The Small Boat.
b) Echosounder.(For getting the depth data)
c) GPS RTK.(For getting position data)
d) Cameras (For getting picture and navigate)
e) Laptop or Computers.
f) Wifi or Radio transmitter.

4.3 System Design


Small boat will design for shallow water, it will created from fiberglass. The
manuever navigation, small boat controlled by remote control from ground or autonomous
system. The depth and position data will be sent through via wireless operating in real-time
and is accepted by computers on land or ground. After that, the navigation and the survey data
results will display in the Hydropro monitors.

4.4 Developing the small boat and software


Developing the greatsboat will using GPS RTK, Echosounder, Camera for navigation,
Camera for mapping and the raspberry. The software will using C# or python language for
develop it. The Parameters Value, After mapping and getting the data, it will get the parameter
value (X,Y,Z) for create bathymetry map in ArcGIS software.

4.5 Working system


The working system of greatsboat is in the land or ground, the computers and remote
control will fuction for monitoring and manuver of the navigation boat. However, in the ocean
or shallow water, small boat will send the data to computer in land. See the picture.

Small boat have two control mode is remote control mode and autonomous mode.
5. ACCESS TO DATA
To access the data and developing the Greatsboat will necessary;
Developing greatsboat:
1. Fiber and the tools such as propeller, motor, servo and etc. ($2500)
2. Autonomous system ($3000)
3. Raspberry ($100)
To Access the data (Hardware) :
1. GPS RTK ($15000) or rent
2. Echosounder ($5000) or rent
3. Camera ($2000)

PERSONAL STATEMENT
KETUT TOMY SUHARI, S.T., (B.ENG)

I am interested in research or study at Hydrography in Plymouth University, and I


choose the topic is Improving an autonomous small boat and mapping analysis of shallow water
area or ocean floor because I want to upgrade and improving the system for my project before
about the Small Hydrography Marine Boundary Boat (SHUMOO) for mapping of
shallow water areas and hope it for success full in (Ph.D) program. The aspects of my
research is helping and simplify the mapping job for hydro-graphic surveyors in shallow water
areas (such as lake, river, etc.) and ocean floor, helping maintain security for military, to take
the picture of ocean floor or shallow water floor and the last, for helping the researchers to
getting the data for their project in shallow water or ocean.
I am interested in study surveying and mapping because I graduate at Geodesy
Engineering Department (Undergraduate) in National Institute of Technology Malang and I am
one of the best of graduate from 491 candidates graduate. Currently, I want to be Doktor (Ph.D)
with Hydrographic specialist and be researcher. I have two papers and publish in International
Conference at Geoicon2016 held in Tenth of November Institute of Technology, Indonesia and
will progress on 1-2st of May 2017 in AIMC (ASIA INTERNATIONAL
MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE) held in University of Technology Malaysia (Index
Scopus) with the tittle The Small Hydrography Marine Boundary Boat (SHUMOO) for
3D Bathymetry Mapping of Shallow Water Areas. My project before, I called its
SHUMOO. SHUMOO is first my product and I sold it in Malaysia with the price $8800. Today,
my planning to improve this boat to autonomous and it can to mapping in ocean and the
Portsmouth University is the first way I choose in the UK.
I was had some experience in 2014 was to be chair of Hindu student association at
National Institute of Technology Malang and to be Chair volunteer of Hydro-graphic surveying
at Sendang Biru, Malang. In 2015, I was to be networking, publication and design coordinators
in Geodesy association and one of delegates from geodesy at National Institute of
Technology Malang to be taken Coordinate from Geodesy Indonesia association. In 2016, I
was internship at 3D GIS Research Lab in Universiti Technology Malaysia with the tittle
Developing web-based and visualization of 3D modelling with using citygml and x3d
(Study case: UTM Space, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and the last, I was chair
of SHUMOO projects with supervisor Mr. Hery Purwanto, S.T., M.Sc. From my experience, I
feel getting the skill to Understanding of teamwork, Improving public speaking and leadership.

I want to be not only a solution to a singular problem. However, a guide for future and the ideas
solution of new technology.
If accepted and given the opportunity to study in Plymouth University, I would
contribute my determination, motivation and personality to every aspect of the program. I will
use my life experiences and family to motivate me to push myself further and my experience
will bring for inspiration to the program. Finally, I will do all of these things not alone, but as
part of community of professors and students.
My plans in future is want to help my country (Indonesia) to improve the new
technology for mapping of shallow water or ocean and useful in every aspect. I dream to go to
the United Kingdom (UK), it is big dream to study in the UK because studying in the UK will
help me develop excellent language skills. The English language is of crucial importance in
today's global business arena and the UK has a long history of welcoming international
students to study in its universities and colleges, it will know of understanding type of different
culture and many things for my reasons to study in the UK. I love the UK.
