Spectral Color Conundrum

2 days [10 minutes the second day to finalize samples 1-5.]

Materials [insert image]

Data Collection

Objective: To recreate the masterminds sample set, #s1-5, using trial and error, to figure out the correct
ratios of liquid volume for the spectral colors necessary to make each 20 mL sample.

Notes:
Document your groups trials T1-T5, and final samples, #s 1-5, below, by typing in the amounts [in
mL] for each spectral color used to make the sample, and inserting a PB image for the final color
outcome.

The max volume for any sample is always 20 mL

The individual spectral colors are always whole amount of mL.
Cover test tube with thumb, flip, and shake to evenly distribute the colors.

#1 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 15-5

#2 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 10-7-3
#3 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 13-7
#4 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 9-7-4
#5 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 18-2

II. Analyze Results

1. Identify your groups final results for each sample, #s 1-5 below, by filling in each color [in bold]
after the correct ratio listed for that color needed to make the sample. *TBP = colors to be provided

2. What was your groups overall initial emotional reaction to this challenge?
Jessica - Some members of our group felt very stressed about this challenge because we didnt have
much time to complete it. Also, we had a hard time getting the right ration of colors in test tube 2,
which added to the stress.

3. How did your group choose to begin, as in, what was the groups initial step?
Kaitlin- Our groups first step was to divide the work to try and complete the assignment as quickly
as possible. We divided it by even and odds, saying whoever finished first would help the rest finish.

4. Based on the Ratios of Colors Actual Value provided by the teacher, how did your group measure up
in terms of accuracy? Support your response comparing your results with the results the teacher
provided.
Cassie - We got samples 1, 3, and 4 correct and for samples 2 and 5 we got wrong. For sample 2 we
did 10mL blue, 7mL purple, and 3mL green, instead it was 10mL blue, 7mL red, and 3 mL green.
For sample 5mL we did 18mL yellow and 2 mL green, instead it was 18mL yellow and 2 mL blue.

5. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the easiest for
your group to figure out and explain why.
Ashley- Test tube one was the easiest for my group, we completed it the first time. It was very easy
for the group to accomplish this test tube because the color of test tube one was a light shade of red
and the ratio of two colors was 15-5 so we used prior knowledge to use 15 mL of red to 5 mL of
yellow to make a lighter shade of red.

6. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the most difficult
for your group to figure out and explain why.
Kaitlin- Test tube two was the hardest for our group. This tube was the hardest because it was a
darker color so that means other lighter colors can hide within it. It was three colors, making it was
more difficult to identify the different parts of the tube. Three colors also make it more difficult to
make educated guesses on the colors because there were more to get wrong.
