Presidents Message Fall 2017

As we approach the winter months, I wish to extend a merry Christmas
to all 101st Airborne Vietnam Veterans and their families. Some of us
may recall our memories of Christmas in Vietnam 1967.

We also acknowledge the recent passing of Gen. Cushman, our com-

mander in Vietnam, as well as Ivan Worrell who had such a distin-
guished military career in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam with the 10 th Spe-
cial Forces, and lastly with the 1st Brigade separate 101st Airborne Divi-
sion. So many of us today remember those who returned home and have
passed on. I am personally grateful for all the days that God gives us on
earth. That is my Thanksgiving.

I want to acknowledge all the help from Bill Ramsey, John Walker, Dave
Nesbitt, and myself for the search for our reunion location for 2018. It
looks like as of today that the reunion site will be the Doubletree by Hil-
ton in Columbus GA near Fort Benning on August 23-26. Dave Nesbitt
did quite a bit of research as to the regional airport in Columbus that
apparently only Delta serves as well as the layover times from Deltas
hub in Atlanta. Thanks Dave for details he will provide on transporta-
tion to the hotel. ED BARBOUR

For those who will search for future reunion sites, one of the emerging
barriers for locating a hotel is whether they will allow our organization to bring in alcohol into our hospitality
room. As an example, I tried to get a location in Tampa where the Snowbird reunion is held annually in Febru-
ary. They told me that the Snowbird reunion was grandfathered but all other organizations will not be allowed
for bringing in alcohol. Apparently, liability concerns are increasing in the hotel industry. So we need to find
military reunion friendly hotels that will allow us to bring in our own spirits as well as reasonable airport ac-
cessibility. That is the challenge for future sites.

Let us be mindful that 2018 is an election year for us and hopefully we will have dedicated leadership stepping
up to the challenges we face in the coming years.

I want to thank Rod Green working with Blair Barbour to finalize our new website. I have not seen it yet as I
was not able to upload the site for some unknown reason.

I will be attending the Brevard Vietnam and all Veterans reunion in Melbourne FL on April 19-22, 2018. Many
of you have participated in the past, but we see fewer each year. If you havent attended in the past few years
or have never been there, try and make it this year. There are plenty of hotels and motels or you can camp
(really).

Best regards to all for this Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year. Airborne or not, Ed Barbour

Wally Morrow - Chaplain

Friends and Comrades,

On the way to looking up something, I discovered something else.

In my local newspaper I came upon an article about The Reformation written by a local citizen (Eugene
Gauerke). As a Christian I was aware of the split between the Catholic Church and the Catholic priest
Martin Luther. In 1520 Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Catholic Church by Pope Leo. He
was named a heretic which came with a death sentence. He managed to elude his detractors and continued
to preach and write. He passed in 1546 at age 62.

Today, more than 74 million people around the world belong to Lutheran churches, even though he wrote
"I beg that my name may be passed in silence and that people call themselves not Lutherans, but Chris-
tians." Luther never gave up hope that the church would someday unite.

This did not happen. Seventy-two years after Luther's death the deadliest religious war in history broke
out. For thirty years (1618-1648) the Protestants and Catholics fought. Eight million people died as a re-
sult of violence, famine and plagues.

Our religious leaders from all faiths now meet regularly to discuss issues that effect all peoples. Regard-
less of color, national origin or faith we are all the same in the eyes of God. I believe that most people in
the world believe in some form of a being that is greater than ourselves. Throughout recorded history
there is evidence that people throughout the world worshiped something or someone of a higher power.
For us Christians that is Jesus Christ.

As a former service member and combat veteran I believe the only reason that I'm still here is because
God had other plans for me. At 70 yrs. old I still haven't figured out what that is. Am I still here to raise a
family? I did that. Was it to spend 9 yrs. coaching youth baseball? I did that. Was it to spend 40 yrs. work-
ing in the paper industry? I did that. Was it to fall out of a tree while hunting just so some of my Airborne
buddies could chide me for not doing a good PLF, thats a Parachute Landing Fall for you legs. LOL. I
did that. And maybe it's to continue serving the 101st Abn. Div. Vietnam Vets as Chaplain. I will con-
tinue to do that at the discretion of our president.

As I complete this message I want to let all our readers know that I was raised Catholic during a time
when it wasn't cool for Lutherans and Catholics to congregate together. When my parents were divorced
when I was 12 that wasn't cool either. I did not let this affect how I grew up. I'm sure there are others out
there that had the same type of obstacles when growing up. I know that I have friends from my childhood
through my Vietnam years to the present that come from all colors and creeds and I thank God for them.

In closing, as the Holidays approach, let us not forget those less fortunate and pray for those who have
lost their lives and for their families who were lost in the latest terrorist attacks. Let us all give thanks to
all our Servicemen and Women who guard the gates of Freedom. I wish you all Happy Thanksgiving and
a very Merry Christmas.

May God Bless You All and God Bless America.

Reunion 2018: If it seems like we just finished a reunion, we did...in August. But, its time to plan another one and as
President Barbour mentioned on page 1, we have finally signed a contract with the DoubleTree by Hilton in Columbus,.
GA. Thats just up the road from Ft. Benning where some of us had some grueling days of training, many of you at
Jump School and some of us afraid of heights grunt LEGS went over to the Shake and Bake School for exercise with
the Rangers. Thats another story you can ask me about when we arrive at Columbus next August. The official dates
are August 23-26, 2018 but as usual, we are offered the same room rates two days before and two days after those start
and end dates. So, plan to come early and stay over a few days. The hotel is offering room rates of $117++ and those
plus signs do indicate additional tax and service fees. Even with that, its still a bargain when you can come hang out
with good friends. And, each room will be provided two free breakfasts each day. Its early but if you want to reserve a
hotel room, go online to the booking link for the 101st at:
https://secure3.hilton.com/en_US/dt/reservation/book.htm?inputModule=HOTEL&ctyhocn=CSGDTDT&spec_plan=CDTADV
&arrival=20180821&departure=20180828&cid=OM,WW,HILTONLINK,EN,DirectLink&fromId=HILTONLINKDIRECT Under
the 101st block of rooms, you can book now and pay later; NO Deposit required. We have 50 rooms reserved so encour-
age anyone interested to reserve early.

Everyone should be aware that Delta Airlines has the only flight service to Columbus, GA. Each flight to that location
will have a layover in Atlanta. When booking flights try to select flights that dont have lengthy layover times. There
are four incoming and outgoing flights per day in Columbus. For those who might consider another means of travel
from Atlanta to Columbus there is a Shuttle Service that makes 36 trips per day. Each trip takes about 1 hour and 45
minutes and costs $41.00 one-way. Car rental is another option but the flight from Atlanta is only 50 minutes. If you
plan your flight times carefully, you wont have any problems. The hotel will provide shuttle service in Columbus.

We plan to continue the $80.00 reunion registration fee; we may have to consider an increase in the future as prices
continue to rise. A reunion registration form will be provided in the next edition of INCOMING. We are planning a trip
to the National Infantry Museum in Columbus and a visit to Ft. Benning. We hope to arrange for a viewing of an actual
jump of those paratroopers in training. Additional details will be posted on the website (www.101namvet.com) as they
become available.

Hurricane Maria: When the hurricane hit Puerto Rico on September 20 of this year, many suffered catastrophic
losses. Our members in that area were affected and we received a call for assistance for our dear friend, PSG Jorge
Otero-Barreto. Like most, he was hit hard and was without water, electricity and cash needed to buy supplies. The
Board of Governors approved a grant of $1,000 and we received donations from many others who wanted to help. The
total amount sent to PSG Otero through this office was $2,431. Others sent donations directly to him. We know that
things are greatly improved but it will take many months to recover. At this time, PSG Otero is doing well as is an-
other friend there, Hector Colon Rios. Thanks to all who contributed to this worthy cause.

Melbourne Gathering: The 31st annual Vietnam & All Veterans Reunion will be held at Wickham Park in Mel-
bourne, FL April 19-22, 2018. As always, we will have a tent setup in the vendors area and in C Campground, Lot 130.
If you havent attended before, you should come if you can. We need a few volunteers for the Color Guard; our group is
usually the only representative for the 101st Airborne. We look forward to seeing some of you there.

Snowbird Reunion: The annual Snowbird Reunion will be held in Tampa, FL on February 7-10, 2018 at the
Westshore Marriott Hotel. This is a 101st Association sponsored event but all who served with the 101 are invited.
Contact Eddie Pissott at 813-454-3205 for information.

Hat Rack: At our reunion in Colorado Springs, I was presented a very nice hat rack that was made by Mike Santure,
our newsletter editor. Since they say I wear so many hats within the organization, the Board felt I needed a big rack. It
is over 6 feet long and was made with enough pegs to hold at least 10 hats. Not only did Mike make the hat rack, he
drove from Michigan to South Carolina and installed it for me in the office. A photo is included in this issue to show off
the beauty of this piece. Thanks to all for this lovely gift.

New Website Coming: I want to begin this item by thanking Blair Barbour for her lovely art pieces she donated for
our auction at the reunion; they were very nice!! Now, I want to thank her and our webmaster Rod Green for their ef-
forts to create a new website for us. Its still under construction but from what little I have seen, it will be a great im-
provement. As it is completed and online, we will notify you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

TAPS
LTG (Ret) John H. Cushman Oct. 3, 1921 ~ Nov. 8, 2017
Known to friends and family as "Jack," the general passed away at the
Knollwood Military Retirement Community in Washington on Wednes-
day, November 8, 2017 at the age of 96, surrounded by his loving family.
Jack was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 71 years, Nancy Tro-
land Cushman. He is survived by his daughters, Connie, Celia, Kathleen,
Mary, and Anne, and by his sons, Jack and Ted, and by 19 grandchildren
and 19 great-grandchildren.
Jack was the son of Horace O. Cushman and Kathleen O'Neill Cushman.
He graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in
1944, where he was First Captain of the Corps of Cadets. He served for 35 years in the U.S. Army, retir-
ing with the rank of Lieutenant General. Jack served three tours of combat duty in Vietnam, including as
the commander of the Second Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division. His assignments as a general offi-
cer included commander of Fort Devens, Massachusetts; commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) and Fort Campbell,
Kentucky; Commandant of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and commander of I Corps
(ROK/US) Group in the Republic of Korea. In retirement, Jack and Nancy lived in great happiness for many years in the company of
good friends at Knollwood.
A memorial service was held at Knollwood (6200 Oregon Avenue) on Sunday, November 12, at 2 p.m. Joseph Gawler & Sons handle
funeral arrangements. Funeral services were held at West Point on Thursday, November 30. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations were
suggested to be made to the Knollwood Employees Appreciation Fund (KEAF) at 6200 Oregon Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20015.
This organization honored General Cushman with an honorary life membership, the only member to ever have been recognized in that
way. He was an active member until his health prevented him from traveling. He was our guest speaker at the annual reunion on at least
three separate occasions, the last being in 2011 at Arlington, VA. He was a great soldier, leader and friend to all and he will be missed.
The Washington Post ran a more detailed obituary that can be seen using the following link:

Ivan G. Worrell - Sweetwater, TN died June 12, 2017 at the Lodge at Wood Home. He
was 89 years old, born December 4, 1927 in Holden, WV. Ivan was a past member of the
organization and would often be seen at our reunions taking photos of all in attendance. He
proudly served his country in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He initially joined the Navy at
the end of WWII working on minesweepers. After his Navy service he attended Georgia
Military Academy where he graduated in 1950 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the US
Army Reserves.

In 1951 during the Korean conflict, he joined the Army and trained at Fort Benning, then
in Korea. Afterward he returned to Fort Bragg where he became one of the first seven
members of our nations now famous Special Forces as an A Team Leader in the 10th
Group. He had a three year hitch in Germany with that team and returned to Fort Camp-
bell where he was assigned first Company Commander of C Co. 1/327 Infantry. He later
had a second tour with the 10th Special Forces as A Team Leader and later B Team Leader with 5th Special Forces
and then S-2 of the 6th Special Forces. In May 1966 he became Information Officer of the 1st Bde (Separate) in Viet-
nam. Ivan had a lengthy military career followed by a great civilian career. I think we all failed to recognize Ivans out-
standing military career; he was just a quite gentleman who went about taking photos at the reunions. I never knew
his background; sorry that we didnt talk more at the reunions.

Robert Scott Johnson - Lincoln, NE - May 1, 1946 ~ November 6, 2017: Scott was a Platoon Leader
with A Co. 1/502 from March to August 1969. He completed OCS and Ranger training at Ft. Benning
and was stationed at Ft. Carson, CO before being deployed to Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star
and other combat medals. Scott leaves behind his wife Renee and two step-daughters, Cortney and
Emily Copper. While cause of death was not revealed it was known that Scott suffered a brain aneurysm
in January 2005.

News of Interest to 101st Vietnam Veterans

Bob DeLuca contacted our web master; Rod Green. I am including some of the correspondence (just his side, not Rods
response). If anyone can help him you can contact him or Rod.

To whom it may concern; my Childhood best friend growing up, James Braccio, was a member of the 101st Airborne
1966 Nam. I have been in touch with members of his family & they would like to know if anyone remembers him. Im
also a Vietnam Vet 196768 with 3rd Bat.26th Marines of Khe Sanh and also with 3rd Recon Bat. I have a few pictures, if
you can find anyone who knows him would be great news for his family. James passed away several years ago. I think his
photo was in Look magazine 1966? Any help deeply appreciated.

Thank You
I Knew I could count on the 101st Airborne, the Armys Best! That picture I was told it was 1966 with Westmorland in
Look magazine, if anyone knows I would appreciate it or if they know of how I can get copy of magazine.

Secretarys Note: Subsequent to the above message we heard from James Braccios nephew, Anthony Braccio. He stated
that his uncle was a participant in Operation Hawthorne which was June 2-21, 1966. This operation involved the 1/327;
2/327; 2/502; 1/5 Cav; 42nd ARVN Reg.; 21st Ranger Bn. & 2/320 FA so anyone in those units might have known James
Braccio. If you have information contact, in addition to contacting Bob DeLuca, please contact Anthony Braccio at
mrdrago@comcast.net.

I was a combat medic with 2/506 from July 1970 to July 1971. Was on OP Phantom when a lightning strike set off all
the claymore mines. OP Phantom was all profiles and located behind Firebase Rakkasan. Off to the left of the OP
was a Firebase that shot off flares all night long. Wondering if this was Ripcord that was evacuated on July 23 1970
and possibly reopened. Thanks Charles Webber. Email: webber2560@yahoo.com

FROM THE EDITOR

Hi Guys!

Sorry we couldnt get the letter out before Thanksgiving but hopefully you all will have it before Christmas. Make
sure you read the presidents and secretary's letters. There is some information about the next reunion. There
should be plenty more in the next issue of Incoming.

There was room so I was able to put in some pictures from our last reunion. Those that were there will remember a
lot of these and for those of you who couldnt make it maybe it will make you want to attend the next reunion. I
apologize for the quality of the pics and am sorry I didnt have any from Ft. Carson. Looking over these pictures I
thought my god there are a lot of old people. I then started to think back in time. I was in country from October
66 til May 68. Thats FIFTY YEARS AGO! For those of us who remember being there for the Tet Offensive; the
fiftieth anniversary of the start of it will be the 30th of January. At the time I never thought of being seventy; hell!
My grandparents werent even seventy, I only wanted to see 21. Now as the years go by I really appreciate seeing
you old guys every year.

I have made a change in the Booster box. Because of the difficulties and mistakes made by having to check back 2
& 3 issues. Boosters will only be listed for one issue from now on.

Bill Lux sent us a letter written by his wife Betty about Heddy Lohr. Though we dont usually print personal let-
ters this is one of the exceptions. It can be found on page 10. Bill also sent a couple of pictures which may be put in
a later issue.
I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and will have a Merry Christmas.
Airborne!
Mike

A TRIBUTE TO HEDDY LOHR

Heddy Lohr was my friend and co-worker for many years in the 101st Airborne Division Vietnam Veterans Or-
ganization. We did so many things together but l cant put them all in the newsletter.

In the early years of the organization when her husband and mine went to a little place outside Atlanta to form
this great group of men we became good friends shortly after. I was there in Atlanta with Bill and was able to
meet Frank, he said I want you to meet Heddy.

We met at our next gathering in Melbourne, Florida. Was best of friends after that. Heddy and I hit it off and
started working for the betterment of the group so we could help our guys. They needed this more than any of
them thought they did. Thank God for people like Frank and Heddy Lohr.

We had not seen each other in several years because of one thing or another. We moved too far away to visit like
we had in the past. Although we saw each other at reunions with the 101st, it was not the same as our long
talks at her house or at mine.

Phone calls were always so wonderful. It seemed we would talk for a moment and felt like it had just been a few
days since we last saw one another. That is how it is with good friends. Friends who have shared many good
times together and gone through some real hardships also.

When we got the news that our granddaughter had a terminal illness, Heddy and Frank were there for us. They
called often and came to see us. We went down to visit them and celebrate birthdays together mine and hers
were days apart. Onetime we took our Cortney to visit them on just such an occasion. We had such a great time.
Heddys granddaughter Brittney came over and played Barbie dolls with Cortney. Cortney had such a great
time she did not have any friends to play with because she had been pulled out of school because of her illness.
Frank and Heddy came up to our place and brought a whole bunch of Barbie's for Cortney and all kinds of
treats. What an impact they made in a very sick little girls life. She never forgot them and neither will we.

We took something to Frank for the organization, when he was President of 101st Vietnam Vets. Our good
friend Jim Matthews was there also. Frank cooked us some Red fish on the grill and smoked up the back porch
and the neighbors called the fire dept. Next thing we know firemen are at the front door. That was exciting and
funny. You know Frank and Heddys son Rob was a fireman there in Casselberry where they lived at that time.
We had plenty of laughs about that one. Poor Flank, he never heard them coming.

Later when I had some health issues they would come and visit us and Cortney would come over to see them.
They stopped by on their way to visit Franks family and we would have long visits. I felt like I had known them
both all of our lives. Cortney was so excited she had made cheerleader and wanted her picture with Heddy.
I don't think any two people could have been any more faithful or more dedicated to the 101st Vietnam Veterans
Organization than Frank and Heddy Lohr. Heddy used to get out with me and later on with many of you other
ladies and sell tickets to our raffles. She and Frank donated a lot of the things we raffled off. Heddy was a real go
getter when it came to selling tickets and did not take no for an answer.

Heddy and I would go food shopping and cook for the fellows when it was just the two of us before any of the
other wives began to come and join us.

Frank would cook something and we fixed whatever to go with it. I could go on and on about those two. What a
pair they were. What can I say but we will miss them both and always remember them with love and joy that
they brought anyone of us who had the honor to have known them.

Thank You Rob and Christen and Brittney for sharing them with us.

Love Betty Lux
