EZ Strumstick Start:
Holding, Fretting and Strumming
the Strumstick
Holding:
Use the strap (over your head and right
arm through). You can slide the knot to
adjust strap length. The big end should rest
against the inside of your forearm.
Fretting:
Firmly squeeze (press) the string closest to
the ground (the thinnest one) with the tip
of your first or second finger. Keep your
finger tip just to the left of one of the
frets (metal pieces that cross the neck).
Strumming:
Hold the pick between thumb and first
finger with the pointed part towards
strings. Brush downward across all three
strings with a brisk, smooth motion. Make
the strum bigger than the three strings
(pretend you are strumming 9 strings).
When you are comfortable strumming
down, you can also strum back up
(thats a little harder).

How to Use this Book
Before you Start: We recommend that you be comfortable hold-
ing, strumming, and fretting the Strumstick before diving into
songs. Those things are covered in the Strumstick Instruction
book, and are pretty easy.
Quick Instructions:
A. The horizontal lines are the strings. The skinniest string is
String 1. Thats the one closest to the floor when you are playing.
B. The numbers you see on the strings are fret numbers. They
are written on the string being fingered.
Details
In Fig.1 below, you see the first note is 0" on the first string: 0"
(zero) means no fret (open string). We call the top fret (that the
strings rest on) the zero fret. Here 0" is written twice, so play it Fret 0
0
two times. Strum down on all three strings each time.
1
Next comes 2", it means press String 1 just behind the 2nd fret. Your 1
choice which finger to use. It is written just once, play it one time.
2
Remember to Strum down on all three strings each time you strum. 2
3
4" means 4th fret. It is written 3 times; how many times will you play
it? 4
4
Then there is a 2", a 1", and a 0", each written once. So play them 5
each once.

Notes on other Strings
In Fig.2, you see 3, 2 , 1 and 0 on the 2nd string. Play that. Next is 3, 2, 1,
0 on the 3rd string, try that. Notice that 0" needs no fingers, whatever
string the 0" is on. Strum down on all three strings

S 3 2 1 0 0
Try the next three 0"s... They all sound the same when you strum all three
strings, dont they?
To Play A Song:
We put the fret number over the word (or syllable) for that note.
Try this: (Strum down on all three strings)
0 0 4 4 5 5 4 3 3 2 2 1 1 0
You just played a song! Notice that the Strumstick automatically makes a
chord background when you strum all three strings.
Single Notes
We said strum down on all three strings. Do Twinkle Twinkle again, but
this time pluck only the string the note is on. This is playing single notes. You
hear the melody without any background chords. You may choose to strum all
three strings or to play single notes at any time. That is up to you. Strum-
ming all three gives a fuller sound, single notes are more delicate.

Optional Advanced Technique: Moving Two Finger Harmony
If we show two notes lined up vertically, it means fret them both at the same time.
This makes cool harmonies (you will still strum all 3 strings). We can call this a
Harmony Pair. Here is Pair #1
In Fig.3 use your 1st finger for the 4", and 2nd finger for the 5".
Then move the same two finger shape for 5 + 6", 3 + 4" etc.
Fig.3
0 0 4 4 5 5 4 3 3 2 2 1 1 0
5 5 6 6 5 4 4 3 3 2 2
You can try this Harmony Pair (#1) any time, in any song. You be the judge of how
it sounds. Sometimes it will work better than others but try it! It adds a great fla-
vor to what you are playing.

Now What About Chords? contd
D
Looking at Fig.5 (previous page), you see G over the first Twinkle. Finger a D
chord (if playing a D Strumstick) or a G chord (if playing a G Stumstick). Strum a
steady beat, or some other rhythm that seems to fit with the melody of the song.
Sing the words, and when you get to C G over the word little, change to a G chord
(D Strumstick) or a C chord (G Strumstick). Then change back to D when you get to
G
Star. Other Chord changes are at How, Wonder, What and Are.
See the next page or inside Back Cover for Chord Diagrams.
We can play this song (or almost any song) with steady downstrums (called a
Steady Beat). Even though the song melody has a pause at (4), we can still
strum that beat, it makes a nice background.
