Follow the format Given: Required: Solution:

No need to copy the problems.

1. The following information is available for a seeded 5-day BOD test conducted on a wastewater sample. 15 ml of the waste
sample was added directly into a 300-ml BOD incubation bottle. The initial DO of the diluted sample was 8.8 mg/l and the final
DO after 5 days was 1.9 mg/l. The corresponding initial and final DO of the seeded dilution water was 9.1 and 7.9, respectively.
What is the 5-day DOD (BOD5) of the wastewater sample?
2. Determine the 1-day BOD and ultimate first-stage BOD for a wastewater whose 5-day 20 oC BOD is 200 mg/l. The reaction
constant k (base e) = 0.23 d-1. What would have been the 5-day BOD if the test had been conducted at 25 oC?
3. The 5-day 20oC BOD of a wastewater is 185 mg/l. What will be the ultimate BOD? What will be the 10-day demand? If the
bottle had been incubated at 33oC, what would be the 5-day BOD have been? k= 0.23 -1
4. The 5-day BOD at 20oC is equal to 350 mg/l for three different samples, but the 20 oC k values are equal to 0.25 d-1, 0.35 d-1,
and 0.46 d-1. Determine the ultimate BOD of each sample.
5. The dilution factor for an unseeded mixture of waste and water is 0.05. The DO of the mixture is initially 9 mg/L , and after 5
days it has dropped by 3.0 mg/L. The reaction constant k has been found to be 0.22/day at 10 0C.
a. What is the BOD5 of the waste?
b. What would be the ultimate BOD?
c. What would be the remaining oxygen demand after five days?
6. A wastewater sample is diluted by a factor of 10 using seeded dilution water. If the following
results are obtained, determine the 5-day BOD.
Dissolved Oxygen, mg/l
Time Diluted Sample Seeded Sample
0 8.65 8.75
1 5.35 8.60
2 5.12 8.56
3 4.45 8.50
4 3.75 8.48
5 2.80 8.44
6 2.20 8.37
7. The town of A has filed a complaint with the DENR that the City of B is restricting its use of River C because of the discharge
of raw sewage. The DENR water quality criterion for River C is 5.0 mg/L of DO. Town A is 15.55 km downstream from City of
B. Using the data in the following table, answer the following:
a. What is the DO in the town of A?
b. What is the critical DO and at what distance does it occur?
c. Is the assimilative capacity of the river restricted?
Parameter City of B wastewater River C
Flow, m3/s 0.1507 1.08
BOD5 at 16oC, mg/L 128.00 N/A
BODu at 16oC, mg/L N/A 11.40
DO, mg/L 1.00 7.95
Temperature, oC 16.0 16.0
k at 20oC 0.4375 N/A
Speed, m/s N/A 0.39
Depth, m N/A 2.80
Bed Activity coefficient N/A 0.200
8. Under the provisions of the Clean Water Act, the DENR established a requirement that municipalities had to provide
secondary treatment of their waste. This was defined to be treatment that resulted in an effluent BOD 5 that did not exceed
30 mg/L (effluent standard). The discharge from City of B in Problem 7 is clearly in violation of this standard. Given the data
in prob. 7 above, rework the problem assuming that City of B provides treatment to lower the BOD 5 to 30 mg/L.
9. What amount of ultimate BOD, in kg/day, may the City of B (Prob. 7) discharge and still allow the town of A 1.50 mg/L of DO
above the DENR water quality criteria for assimilation of waste?
10. A river traveling at a velocity of 10 km/day has an initial oxygen deficit of 4 mg/L and an ultimate CBOD of 10 mg/L. The CBOD
has a decay coefficient of 0.2/day, and the streams reaeration coefficient is 0.4/day. What is the location of the critical
point: (a) in time? (b) in distance?
11. The pH of a water sample was found to be 6.3. The bicarbonate was measured as 2.1 x 10 -3 M. Assuming that the sample was
isolated from the atmosphere, calculate the total carbonate is pK the total carbonate is pK a1 and pKa2 are equal to 3.3 and
10.33, respectively.
12. A water sample was analyzed to contain 150 mg-L -1 CO32- and 100 mg-L-1 HCO3- at a pH of 8 at 25 oC. Approximate its total
alkalinity in terms of mg-L-1 CaCO3.
