Upper Structure Triads

Usually used for the 3rd and 7th chord of the major scale.
Example- CM7 Dm7 E7#9b13 FM7 G7 Am7 B7#9b13
Most of the time this 3rd chord resolves to the 6th chord.

Combining Quartal, So What and Upper Structure Voicings can sound very smooth
and is used a lot in Modern Jazz piano.

Chord Tones
Notes which occur in the chords. Ex- 1,3,5,7 in a Major 7 chord.

Available Tensions
Extensions of the basic chord that sound acceptable in a voicing. Depending on
the chord, they might be T9, Tb9 or T#9, T11 or T #11.

Avoid Notes
Avoid b9 and tritone intervals.

The Altered Dominant Scale


Darkest possible set of chromatic tensions that can be applied to V7 chord; it
represents a dominant chord with everything altered except for the essential
chord tones.

If 5 is present in the voicing, b13 is generally not used.

Secondary Dominants
Secondary dominants are dominant chords that create an expectation of
resolution down a fifth to a diatonic target.

Chord Scales for Secondary Dominants


Chord scales for secondary dominants consist of chord tones and tensions
diatonic to the key.

V7/II-A(Mixolydian)(9,b13)
V7/II-A(Mixolydian)(b9,#9,b13)

V7/III-B7b5(b9,#9,b13)
If 5 is present in the voicing, b13 is generally not used.
Voicings
Kenny Barron Voicing
(Six note) Two-handed voicing used over a minor 7th chord when
there is an 11th in the melody (the top note).
Left Hand- 1 5 9
Right Hand- b3 b7 11

Example- Cm7 Chord

So What Voicing
Quartal chord voicing made of a stack of 4 perfect fourth
intervals which has a major third interval on top.
Used when you have a minor chord with the 5th in the melody.
They sound ambiguous, so they doesnt need to be resolved to
any particular chord.
Left Hand- 1 11
Right Hand- 7 3 5
