Technological determinism

Assumes that a societys technology determines the development of its social and cultural
values (Wikipedia, accessed October 16, 2017)
The belief that technology shapes society in some way which includes social practices such as
learning (Oliver, 2011)
Hard determinism
o View technology as developing independent from social concerns
o We organize ourselves to meet the demands of technology, and the outcome of this
organization is beyond our control or we do not have the freedom to make a choice
regarding the outcome
Soft determinism
o More passive view of the way technology interacts with socio-political situations
o Maintains that people have a chance to make decisions regarding the outcomes of a
situation
Technology as neutral
o Technology is neither good nor bad
o What matters are the ways we use technology
