YEARLY SCHEME OF WORK

ENGLISH LANGUAGE YEAR 5 ( SEKOLAH JENIS KEBANGSAAN )

INTRODUCTION

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Year 5 Yearly Scheme of Work English SK / SJK is designed to help teachers in planning their lessons in a year. It is modular in
structure and lessons are taught according to the modular curriculum i.e :

Day 1 : Listening and Speaking : to develop pupils ability to listen and respond to stimulus with guidance. Pupils should be taught to
listen carefully and be encouraged to speak with correct pronunciation, stress and intonation in
various situational contexts.

Day 2 : Reading : Applying word attack skills to identify homographs and homophones using contextual clues to get
meaning of words and identify proverbs, phrasal verbs, idioms and similes. Apply dictionary skills.

Day 3 : Writing : To practise cursive writing of words, phrases and sentences in paragraphs. To express ideas clearly
in writing with teachers guidance and later progress to become independent writers.

Day 4 : Language Arts : The Childrens Contemporary Literature component is to be taught during the Language Arts lesson
based on 3 genres such as short stories ( And Something Weird Happened), poems (Anthology
of Poems for Year 4,5 and 6) and graphic novel (Jonathan Swifts Gullivers Travels).

Day 5 : Grammar : Various strategies should be employed in teaching grammar .Using language games, teaching
grammar in context and through explicit instruction will make the learning of grammar more
accessible and enjoyable.

The topics in the Yearly Scheme of Work have been categorized under three broad themes mainly:

World of Self, Family and Friends : surroundings, family, loved ones and friends , community and society.
World of Stories and : wonderful and magical world of stories i.e. Malaysian folk tales to Asian folk tales.
World of Knowledge : general knowledge about the world and current issues.

gm/lgoffcr/yskssryr5/ppds/2015
All language skills are to be taught through these themes which provide the context for language learning. The Educational Emphases are
infused and woven into classroom lessons to prepare pupils for the challenges of the real world. Therefore Moral Education, Citizenship
Education, Patriotism, Thinking Skills, Mastery Learning, Information and Communication Technology Skills, Multiple Intelligences,
Constructivism, Contextual Learning, Learning How to Learn Skills, Creativity and Innovation, Entrepreneurship and 21 st Century Skills are
incorporated where appropriate and relevant in lessons. You may refer to the DSKP for further references.

This Yearly Scheme of Work is as a guideline and teachers may adjust the dates according to the schools calendar.
For further reference on the activities , you may refer to the Year 4 Teachers Guide which was provided to you during the KSSR English Year 5
courses .

As for the assessment for Year 5, it will be based on the new DSKP .You may download the latest DSKP from the BPK portal as the one given
to you during the KSSR course serves only as a draft.

DAILY LESSON PLAN should include the following:

Focus
Theme
Topic
Learning Standard
Learning Outcomes
Activities
CCE
Assessment ( if any)
Impact

Enclosed herewith are also the sample daily lesson plan and suggested activities /the allocation of the number of weeks for literature as well
for your references. Please use them as guidelines to help you in planning your daily lesson. For teachers in SK only 10 periods of English
lessons in a week are allocated which can be divided accordingly e.g 2/2/2/2/2 periods in a week or 3/2/2/3 in a week and bear in mind that
lessons should be carried out according to the modular structure.

gm/lgoffcr/yskssryr5/ppds/2015
As for teachers in SJK only 5 periods of English lessons in a week are allocated which can be divided accordingly and should be carried out
according to the modular structure. The weekly topics may take two weeks to complete the modular cycle for teachers teaching in SJKC/
SJKT. I hope these guidelines will be useful in helping you in planning your lessons.
