The saxophone was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in

the 1840s. He wanted to bridge the woodwind and brass families with an

instrument as powerful as a brass instrument, but as delicate as a woodwind.

Today the saxophone is most often associated with jazz music, but in his day,

Saxs vision was to have his instrument suitable in orchestral and solo settings.

A saxophone quartet is a chamber music ensemble that traditionally consists Presents the

quartet was established as part of the early 20th century French military

bands. French saxophone virtuoso Marcel Mule initiated this type of

ensemble in 1928 as a member of the Garde Rpublicaine, which later became

known as Le Quatuor de Saxophones de Paris, and then the Marcel Mule

Quartet. Marcel Mule was the second Professor of Saxophone at the Paris

Conservatoire after Adolf Sax himself.


Hippocrene Saxophone Quartet
Early in the saxophone quartet history, little repertoire existed for this type

of instrumentaion. Many teachers and performers, including Marcel Mule,

began adapting string quartet, piano, voice, and keyboard literature to allow

many opportunities for the ensemble to continue to gain popularity and a

place among serious chamber music performers. Later, this lead to many

respected 20th century composers choosing the saxophone quartet to

Phillip Glass, David Maslanka, and William Bolcom.

Tenor saxophonist Jeremy Williamson is currently the Director of Bands at Quartet No. 4 in Cm....L. Beethoven
