LESSON REPORT

Group A

a. Identification of the speaking session

Date: Oct 14th
Group: A
Number of students: 7
Length: 1:43
Topic: Past progressive
Link to recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pt7UmoUhrKI

b. Brief narrative or description of the speaking lesson

This was a very productive class, students told stories using the past
progressive and the aim of the class was achieved. They practice and
communicate with each other with more fluency and I feel really proud,
because I think that I have learnt to create exercises for them to use their
English and improve their speaking.

c. How successful were activities and materials?

I think that the material was appropriate. To start they watched a very fun
video which presented in a very familiar and understandable way the topic,
then they got to play a game choosing number to get different situations,
they had to say what they were doing at that particular time, that activity
went along well because there was expectation and the students were
attentive. Then they had the freedom to tell us about a dream, student like
this kind of activities because it allows creativity and opens a wider range of
vocabulary for them to use in their production and finally the idea of
retelling a known story was nice, one of the students was very creative and
her story was not only wrote with good grammar but it was very interesting.

2
d. What departures did you make from the original lesson plan?

At the warmer students were only supposed to watch the video and
comment on which tense was being used, but I wanted to make questions
to check for understanding and for the students attention to this stage.

e. What difficulties did learners experience in different stages of the

lesson?

I really dont think they had difficulties developing the exercises, but they
are still a little afraid to use their English and that provoked many grammar
mistakes, but they are very committed students and they always correct
themselves and try to make it better.

f. What aspects of the lesson did you feel were particularly successful?

The production stage. Students retold a story and they had the time to plan
it, so I felt they were happy and proud of their production, and enjoyed
using their English to communicate their ideas.

g. What aspects of the lesson did not work particularly well? Why?

I think the input was a little too basic, because I was trying to save time. I
thought I was doing well because I was using this time for their production,
but I forgot to leave room for questions and check their understanding.

h. What aspects of the lesson should be done differently next time?

As I said the Input or presentation of the topic. I must think of a more

student center way to present the topics.

Group B

a. Identification of the speaking session

Date: Oct 14th
Group: B
Number of students: 7
Length: 1:30
Topic: Simple past
Link to recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJku7lyyhcY

b. Brief narrative or description of the speaking lesson

We had a great class, students knew a lot about the use of the simple past
and they had the opportunity to use what they know and practice their
speaking. First I tried to help them recognize when to use this tense and
which time expressions could help them build sentences. Then I rapidly
presented the conjugation of the regular verbs so that they could have
scaffolding for the sentence formation they would be working at in the
practice, production and assessment stages. When they started building
sentences, it worked out very well, because the activities were set for them
to be attentive and use the past with accuracy.

c. How successful were activities and materials?

I think that the material and activities were appropriate. To start they heard
a song and identify verbs in the past, then they recognized time expressions
related to the past and I presented the simple present. After that got to
play a game choosing number to get verbs they should work with, That
activity went along well because there was expectation and the students
were attentive. Then they choose a picture to create a story based on that
picture and used the simple past correctly. I think that visuals are very
useful for students to produce language. And finally they could use what
they knew to communicate with their peers.

4
d. What departures did you make from the original lesson plan?

In the practice stage, I thought I was going to uncover the verbs and the
students would say the sentence taking turns, but I noticed that students
needed some time to think about what to say, so I decided to distribute the
verbs first and give them two minutes to prepare their intervention.

e. What difficulties did learners experience in different stages of the lesson?

They had a little problem at the practice stage, some students just said
sentences that were not link together and that made them feel as if they
were doing something wrong. They are also a little insecure and commit
many grammar mistakes; this hinders their production and doesnt allow
the class to have a good pace.

f. What aspects of the lesson did you feel were particularly successful?

The assessment stage. At that point students were confident of using their
English and personalization helps them get connected with the activity and
produce better language.

g. What aspects of the lesson did not work particularly well? Why?

I also think the input was a little too basic in this class. I am always trying
to go through this stage very fast, but I must think of better ways to get my
students involved in this stage.

h. What aspects of the lesson should be done differently next time?

I want to include exercise which fosters more student interaction and

collaboration.
