Subject US. HISTORY

Grade Level 10

Learning Objective USI.7 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the

challenges faced by the new nation by
b) describing the historical development of the
Constitution of the United States;
Content

c) describing the major accomplishments of the first

five presidents of the United States.

Online Activity This SOL fits with the lesson because James Madison was the
fourth president of the United States and he drafted the
amendments of the Constitution.

This will be a synchronous lesson about the Constitution. The

students will have basic knowledge regarding the Bill of Rights
from the previous class. The students will be able to ask
questions and receive immediate feedback, if there is any
confusion while participating in this assignment.

Students will be asked, "Do I have a Right?" This simulation

will come up with random situations or "mock cases" and the
user must choose his or her response based on their previous
knowledge of the subject matter.

Students will be prompted to iCivics.com and will be asked to

create an account. An account is not required to participate in
this activity. The students will be given two options and should
choose the game version. They will then be asked to type in
their first and last name and will also be able to customize
their own character. Their character will perform civil duties
at a law firm and will work alongside with another partner of
the students choice. Each partner specializes in different areas,
so it's the students prerogative to choose which partner fits
best with their identity. Different clients will come in for 7 days
during the game and each will have their own unique case. It's
your job as a lawyer to decide if they have a case or not, and
also who is best equipped to handle the particular case. When

winning a case, you will receive prestige points. These points

will be used to obtain more lawyers, better advertisement, or
office upgrades. Each lawyer has a different area of specialty,
so if the student fills up all his or her chairs, the case is more
likely to be won. This game will take over an hour if played
properly. Reading the cases the user will decide whether they
have a right and also if their case needs to be considered for
trial. If the user is struggling to choose which right goes with
which case, the rights are listed under each lawyer. This
simulation is very helpful and is an excellent learning tool
regarding the concepts of the Bill of Rights.

After completing this assignment, the students will use the

Discussion Board and come up with mock trials of their own.
They will all work together as a class to discuss whether they
have a right or not. This will be used to check for
comprehension and understanding of the subject matter.
