Methods of solving Engineering problems and finding the appropriate solu-

tions

1 Experimental method
This method of finding the solution to the engineering problems is where an
experiment is conducted under the simulated environment that mimics the real
time application and then finding out the solution for the problem. Most of the
times they are either scaled down, thus the error of uncertainty is an inherent
problem in this method. The other major problem is that sometimes mimicking
the real time environment is not possibly either because of the cost or either
because of the complicity that is present. For instance working with nuclear
weapons as well as nuclear power plants, mimicking them is very costly as well
as they have the constraint of the limiting the radiations a person is exposed to.

2 Analytical method
In this method a mathematical model is developed for a problem, and thus in
turn the equation derived is solved for obtaining an effective solution. This in
turn also has some inherent problems as most of the problems that are time
relevant thus they will lead to a either a differential or a partial differential
equation. Solving these equation using the knows classical methods is a tedious
process, as the time that is required for solving the problem is on the higher
side. In addition to that solving the equation will lead to another unknown
constant and to find out the unknown constants boundary condition have to
solved. The same problem is also present in the case of integral problem.

3 Numerical methods/ Computational Methods

These are classified again into three different methods:

3.1 Functional Approximating methods

1. Functional - A function within a function

1
2. Physical problem is written in terms of differential equations or any pos-
sible mathematical expressions
3. By integrating and applying boundary conditions, an approximate solu-
tion can be obtained

4. There are a few different types of procedures that are available to solve
(will be discussed later in the class elaboratly)

3.2 Finite Element Analysis (or) Finite Element Method
