How to Write a Behavioral Objective

Definition: An objective must have four parts:

The individuals who are to be involved in


A = Audience
learning

The verb (action) that describes what the


learner will be able to do after the
B = Behavior
instruction. Must be measurable and
observable.

The condition tells under what


circumstances the student will demonstrate
achievement of the objectives.
Circumstances are items like: during an
oral presentation, on a multiple choice
C = Condition
exam, in their study guide, after working
in a group, after reading the text, after the
demonstration, after viewing the video,
without the use of notes, during teacher
closure.

The degree details the minimum level of


proficiency that is acceptable when the
objective is achieved. This is the
D = Degree performance level. Most often it is a
number: 8 out of 10, cite at least two
references, answer correctly 85% of the
items, fewer than five mistakes
