Your unconscious mind has a memory for virtually everything you do, and this includes your sleep behavior.
It has a memory for good, high quality sleep, and it has a memory for sleep disturbance. Your unconscious
will be selective in reviewing your sleep behavior, and will focus on the memory, the very positive memory,
of good quality sleep, sleeping deeply and continually through the night and waking up refreshed in the
morning. [Always include the protective suggestion:] If you need to awaken through the night for an
emergency or any physiological need, of course you will do so, but otherwise you will sleep through the
night with good, comfortable sleep. Any memories of disturbed sleep will be ignored, and unless there is
anything that's important that we need to know about that's keeping you from sleeping, you can sleep com-
fortably. If it is important that we need to know something that is interfering with your sleep, which is
known by your unconscious mind, I suggest that it will surface into your conscious awareness before we
meet again, so that you can tell me about it. Or, if we need to at another time, we can ask your unconscious
mind exactly what it is that is interfering.
SUGGESTIONS TO POTENTIATE MEDICATION. [If it has been deemed beneficial for the patient to be taking a
sleep medication for a brief time, another useful strategy is to give hypnotic sug-gestions to potentiate that
drug:] Your uncon-scious mind will make the best use of these medications, directing them, using them to
help you experience a very good quality of rested, continued sleep, until awakening refreshed in the
morning. And your unconscious mind will memorize the therapeutic effect of this, and perhaps even the
chemistry behind it, so that when you taper off the sleep medication, your unconscious mind will continue
to produce the therapeutic effects of that medication.
INTRODUCTION
Following preliminary history gathering and assessment, the induction should be geared toward a relaxed,
dream-like state, but always taking the patient's personality and defenses into account. Avoid motor tasks
and emphasize fantasy, even if the patient has not shown much talent for it.
IMAGERY
Imagine yourself walking leisurely along a path that winds through . . . [choose the kind of scenery likely to
appeal to the patient]. Feel the springy, soft ground under your feet .. . enjoy the green foliage . . . the light,
gently weaving through openings . . . the increasing darkness as you enter deeper . . . deeper .. . [etc.]. Soon
you see a fork in the path . . . one side leads to a place of deep relaxation, the other side leads more directly
to sleep [adapt suggestions to the patient's needs]. You can choose which side you want to enter. [This
choice is important for those who have trouble giving up control.] You want to enter the side of sleep. Soon
you will feel even more drowsy than you already are . . . drowsier and drowsier . . . sleepier and sleepier.
Soon you will drift off into a deep, natural, healthful sleep. [Repeat "sleep." The patient may actually fall
asleep, in which case it is well to allow a brief period before awakening.]
STAIRCASE IMAGERY
Imagine yourself going down a softly carpeted stairway . . . slowly . . . step by step .. . you count each step
until you are all the way down. [Therapist counts slowly to 10 or 20.] At the bottom of the steps you see a
room, and you know that this room is there for you . . . for you alone. You enter this room. It's the most
comfortable room imaginable and it looks ex-actly as you want it to be. [Describe if indicated.] There is a
wonderfully inviting bed in this room. You realize immediately that it is there for you. [The patient's own
bedroom may be used.] You lie down in the bed and enjoy the comfortable firmness [or softness] of the
mat-tress, the silky feel of the sheets, the pillow adapting itself to the contours of your head. You sense, you
know, that this is where you can sleep, as much as you want. Feel the pleasant drowsiness taking over more
and more. Before long, you drift off into a natural, relaxing, restoring sleep . . . [etc.]. [If a tape is made of
these suggestions, instruct the patient to arrange for automatic shut-off of the recorder.]
1. Visualize a soft, black velvet curtain which has a warm, comfortable feeling about it. As thoughts enter
your mind, allow these to drift across the curtain and disappear out of the other side of your mind, then
return to a contemplation of the curtain. [Pause]
2. Then imagine yourself on the veranda or patio of a lovely house which has 10 steps leading down to a
beautiful garden below. For each step you descend, allow yourself to let go more and more so that, when
you reach the foot of the steps, you feel a sense of peace and relaxation. Enter the garden, noticing the
colors of the flowers, the drifting clouds, the sound of birds singing, the rustle of leaves in the trees, and the
pleasant warmth of the sun. [Pause]
3. Continue to visualize the garden, picturing yourself lying on the grass, enjoying the warmth of the sun on
your face. As you lie there, watch the leaves as they fall slowly from the trees nearby, reminding you that it
is possible to let go of old problems and worries, allowing them to drop away, just as old leaves drop away
from trees, to make way for new growth.
You use an awful lot of energy staying awake. You resort to every conceivable measure of preventing sleep.
Now, if you sleep and rest yourself thoroughly, you will have an oversupply of energy. What would you
really like to do with that energy? What constructive or instructive or developmental project would you like
to undertake to use up that extra daily allotment of energy? You've got to direct it elsewhere [rather] than
in keeping yourself awake. That nice rest each night is going to replenish your energy. How are you going to
use it?
Pronto se sentir an ms
somnoliento de lo que ya son. . . Ms somnoliento y durmiente. . . Ms durmiente y ms durmiente. Pronto
. . despacio . . . paso a paso .. .
