Low-Cost Multifunction Measurements

Characterizing the power output and blade stress of a lab-based prototype
tidal stream energy turbine
Accurately and easily synchronizing analog, digital, and encoder measurements was crucial for University
of Southampton researchers tasked with characterizing a physical system under test. They used a USB
multifunction DAQ device to acquire all the signals they needed and easily implemented triggering
and synchronization using the NI-DAQmx driver while staying within their budget. As environmental
engineers with little programming experience, their ability to configure analysis in both LabVIEW
and textual math gave them the flexibility to leverage the knowledge and expertise of various team
members. The hardware and software support provided by NI ensured smooth deployment and resulted
in the successful publication of research examining the effect of waves and turbulence on this important
green energy technology.

Stand-Alone, Distributed, Mixed Measurements

Creating a vibration test system for in-vehicle tests of exhaust
systems onvocational vehicles
ITM, a test system integration company, needed to minimize hardware complexity and customize and reuse
existing code to drive efficiency and deliver systems on tight deadlines. With the direct connectivity
and signal conditioning of CompactDAQ, ITM quickly and easily deployed 28 channels of acceleration data
alongside other analog measurements. ITM engineers repurposed existing LabVIEW code previously
used on tethered USB and Ethernet systems to run headless on the deployed windows controller with
minimal changes. They added required specialist vibration and order-analysis functionality using LabVIEW
analysis functions that resulted in the systems redeployment to meet subsequent in-vehicle test needs.

Testing and controlling the fuel cell stack for a university race car
The team at Delft needed a single, flexible platform that could fulfill the measurement and control
prototyping needs for building a hydrogen-powered race car in just one year. Team members used
LabVIEW andCompactDAQ to test and control individual parts of the fuel cell including pumps, valves,
sensors, and fuel flow. They chose LabVIEW to rapidly develop the fuel cell because of both the intuitive
environment and the depth of analysis they could achieve using the PID and fuzzy logic toolkits for
precise valve control. The team built lightweight custom embedded boards and used CompactDAQ
tomaintain communication via CAN bus, which led to the smooth deployment of a race car that
competed across Europe.

acting as system integrators for NASA, chose a PXI solution for their tightly synchronized, conditioned
measurement capabilities. They deployed 500 distributed thermocouple input channels using multiple
18-slot chassis, all synchronized to within 100 s to ensure trustworthy measurements. For the first

High-Throughput Reliable Measurements

Using radar arrays to model avalanche flow in the Swiss Alps
Avalanche measurement is a one-time event and retests are not an option. Making full use of NI support,
researchers at University College London (UCL) quickly developed custom software to detect, trigger,
and begin acquisition from eight simultaneous channels sampling at 2 MS/s at 16-bit resolution. Most
critically, taking advantage of the high-throughput capabilities of PXI, they could reliably measure large

HIGH-CHANNEL
datasets from avalanche events without data loss or buffer overflows. The data was then processed,
segmented, and saved to a custom file type using automated scripting within DIAdem software.
Only by choosing a fully customized hardware and software approach did UCL achieve the required
measurement accuracies to produce avalanche models that help keep those on the mountainside safe.
