I. Introduction

Profile of the Business

In todays world, cell phones play a major role in our everyday lives. Cell phones are becoming
more popular day by day as people become more dependent on technology. According to How Stuff
Works, it indicates that cellphones are taking over the phone market, while landlines are becoming
obsolete. As the cell phone market evolves and more consumers rely on texting and phone applications, it
is important to understand phone trends to maintain a competitive advantage. It will capitalize on the
demand for portable, hi-tech and easy to use communication technologies to pave the way for a faster and
more profitable future.

Having to constantly charge a dying cell phone is a common issue that people struggle with,
because everyone always using their phone, from the day they wake up until they go to sleep, whether it
is from class, or from work, or even from traveling, it calls for a more efficient charging mechanism. The
best solution should be to find a way to produce electricity in a friendly manner, especially for small
electronic devices and at the same time, it will be accessible everywhere.

The introduction of solar powered smartphones will eliminate these issues while contributing to
the growth of green energy. The researchers have decided to create a mobile android phone with a sleek
design to install a solar panel screen onto back of the phone that will charge the phone when it runs low
on battery. Implementing solar panels to fit on small screens would allow cell phone users to charge their
phones through the source of light. Also, it would appeal to environmentally friendly people because
eliminating the use of chargers would be saving and conserving energy.

Reasons for Choosing the Particular Study

The reason for choosing this particular study are the following:

To develop smartphone that recharge themselves powered by solar light.

To produce electricity in a friendly manner, especially for small electronic devices and at the
same time be accessible everywhere.
To formulated a new product that will eliminate the use of chargers to make charging more
convenient to cell phone users, especially from environmentally friendly people, to the younger
generation of people that rely or depend on their cell phones, and to the tourists and travelers in
which the usage of cell phones rely or depend on their cell phones.
To raise the interest of people who are willing to use sustainable technology for everyday use by
providing a convenient of having an option to use conventional charging or the alternative of
solar power charging.

Importance of the Study

From every generation, people are starting to catch on to the new and updated technology. Each
generation is adapting to this change and it is becoming the norm to constantly be connected through
social networking, email, and even video conferencing. Smartphones demand is increasing because they
are simple to use, affordable to some people, and save time. And the major complaint from consumers is
how quickly the battery drains from a days usage, which is exactly why this solar panel cell phone will
work well.

According to Transaction World, as the cell phone market increases, more consumers rely on
texting and phone applications. Our society is constantly looking for fast and efficient ways to
communicate. Also, discounted smartphone devices and affordable wireless plans have made ownership
of some kind of mobile phone a near necessity. Once one person sees another use something new, it stirs
the curiosity and influences others to do research and even make a purchase.

According to Solar Energy for Homes, Cellphones account for a large portion of the huge
increase in electricity consumption that has occurred in the last decade. A solar powered smartphone will
help slow down the increase. With people becoming more green and aware of their impact on the
environment, this solar device will be a major improvement in the cellphone market. As consumers
become responsible for the environment, they are seeking out new methods and ideas to power their
electronics and that includes the ultimate gadget, the solar powered smartphone.

Benefits of the Study

Cell phones account for a large portion of the huge increase in electricity consumption that has
occurred in the last decade. Solar powered smart phones can help to slow this increase. It can be very
useful for charging phones in developing countries and places where the electric grid is unreliable or
power supply is unpredictable.

Aside from that, it comes with a very reasonable price tag which makes them more affordable
for people living in less developed countries that live on very minimal wages and living with a limited
access to electricity. Having solar powered smartphone, they will be able to charge their phones without
the need to travel to a village and pay someone to use their power outlet.

This key appeal of solar powered smartphone is the growing consumer demand for
environmentally sustainable mobile phone devices. Solar power is an infinite resource. It will continue to
advance in efficiency and effectiveness; therefore it is worth the investment because it will continue to
improve over time. Also, solar powered smartphone is a very innovative product that will deliver values
for customers. The product is convenient, easy to use, and it meets a lack in the current market. Indeed, it
will make the life of our customers easier by not having to worry about their cellphones battery.

II. Statement of the Problem

How can we improve the battery life of our mobile phone so that people can maximize the use of
the phone? How can we use our phone if it is drained in the absence of outlet for charging and
powerbank?

One of the current trends is the increase in cell phone use along with a growing environmental
awareness. It is inconvenient to carry more chargers for electronic devices (camera, cellphone, and
computer) when travelling, especially when all electronic systems are not the same around the world, and
people traveling need different converters.

Along with call quality, a cell phone's battery life is one of the most important considerations
when choosing a handset. It is a huge burden to have a cell phone die in the middle of an important call.
And it is no fun either to have little power when theres not a charger or outlet anywhere near. While
manufacturers make lots of promises about a phone's battery life, they do not always hold true to
producing long battery life spans.

III. Root Cause of the Problem

Many mobile phone users nowadays have problems when the phones are having a low battery
power. When we are in an outdoor area and their phone gets the drained, we need to find some charging
outlet.

Even on the roads, on our way to office or schools, there is always a need to access on our phone
for business and school purposes. And it cannot be prevented that our phone will be drained due to long
time of usage. In this, you will be needing to charge your phone, but you are in an outdoor area, it is
impossible to do, even if powerbanks are already available because not all people have this.

In these situations, it is very inconvenient for them to find a charging outlet on the outdoor area.
In our generation, they wanted to have a very convenient smartphone. That is why, they are finding a
phone that has a capability to charge its battery even on the outdoor places.

IV. Quality Improvement

Innovation

1. Formulating an eco-friendly smartphone.

Solar powered smartphone meant lower energy consuming mobile phone with very limited
feature sets. It combines the latest multimedia features and stylish design harmoniously, while achieving
lower energy consumption and incorporating eco-friendly materials.

2. Designing a solar panel at the back of the phone.

By charging with the solar panel located on the back of the phone, users can generate enough
power to use the device anytime and anywhere. Solar energy is considered one of the most eco-friendly
energy sources and it helps users reduce usage of energy from non-renewable sources.

3. Made from eco-friendly materials.

It will be made from recycled plastic called PCM (Post Consumer Material), which is extracted
from water bottles and paper, printed in soy ink, helping to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions
in the manufacturing process. It also suggests a simple DIY idea to reuse the package as a photo frame or
a pencil box.

4. Having a unique user interface.

It is designed to draw attention to preserving our fragile environment. With Eco mode, screen
brightness, backlight duration and bluetooth can be set to an energy-efficient mode with just one click.
One application is the Eco Walk function that allows users to count their steps with a built in
pedometer and calculate the reduction in CO2 emission realized by walking as opposed to using a motor
vehicle. This unique function allows users to see the value of walking by calculating the number of trees
that have been saved.
V. Tools and Techniques for Improvement

Tools

How does a solar panel work? There are two types of solar panels and the type we are using is the
photovoltaic. The principle is simple; the solar cell has two layers of silicon. The layer that will be in
touch with solar beams is a mix of silicon and phosphorous, and given the fact that phosphorous contains
more electrons than silicon has, this layer is charged negatively. The layer non in touch with sunbeams is
a mix of silicon and boron and given the fact that boron has more protons than silicon has, this layer is
positively charged.
Solar beams contain photons and when a photon gets in touch with the negatively charged layer
of silicon the energy produced causes the break between an electron and an atom of silicon. Positive
atoms will so automatically go to the other layer (the positively charged one) and the negative ones will
automatically go to the layer negatively charged. An electric potential difference followsthis is
electricity.
For our product we are using the amorphous ones because we do not need a very good yield and
for economic reason as well. Indeed, the charger of a cellphone only requires 8 watts when charging.
After trying different yield of solar cells we found out that the best choice is to take a panel of 9V. To
justify our choice we are going to use a physics formula: P=V*I with P power in watts, V voltage in volts,
and I intensity (or current) in amperes. So when the solar irradiation is maximum (that means 1000W/m
= 10A), the yield would be P=9*10=690W (9%). Using a 9V cells means that even if the solar radiation is
minimum you can charge your phone anyway. Given the fact that we only need 8W we have to put a
small resistance in the circuit to avoid issues in the electric circuit.

In a simplistic way, to be able to charge a solar powered smartphone, all you need to find a direct
sunlight from an outdoor area. The solar cell will automatically engage when detected a direct sunlight.
The energy that the solar cell gathered from the sun will be converted to an electric current that will helps
the battery of the smartphone to charge. When the battery reached the exact power that the phone needed,
the device will automatically switch on.

Design for Environmental Responsibility

Design for Environmental Responsibility must be used to reduce the overall human health and
environmental impact of a product, process or service, where impacts are considered across its life cycle.
The researchers will be reinforcing a commitment to protect the environment through the design of eco-
friendly product and develop ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to save energy at every stage
of the product life cycle, as an effective response to climate change.

To eliminate hazardous substances from handsets and packaging, the researchers have decided to
develop a smartphone made from recycled materials, and to be recharged by solar light. Solar powered
smartphone will be introduce as an innovative eco-friendly product which combines the latest multimedia
features and stylish design harmoniously which achieves lower energy consumption and incorporating
eco-friendly materials.

The product will be first made in China because of lower costs, especially labor cost. Once
profitable, the product will be made in the United - States. In order to create long-relationship with
customers we are offering a warranty of two years. A two-year warranty seems to be the best because
according to some research, people change their phones on average every two years. The target is to make
customers confident about our product.
Design for Manufacturability

An 18:9 display, narrow bezels, curved edges, and a unibody design. The Solar Powered
Smartphone comprises a relatively compact appearance and feel of the phone but we guess you with the
solid weight of 118.9g. The plastic front has the rear cover, featuring a solar panel on the outside and a
metal plate inside.

Design and Construction

The exterior of the smartphone uses recycled bottles of water as its main material. Its curved
shape and smooth design with its shaded dark-to-light black coloring makes the phone quite appealing.
The build quality is commendable while the solar panel on the back. The left side is where you will find
the volume buttons, while the right side has the power/lock button, as well as the triple card tray which
can accommodate two nano-SIM cards as well as a microSD card. It also releasing a solid rear panel
which reveals the 1080 mAh Li-Ion battery.

At the bottom, we have the loudspeaker, micro USB port, main microphone, and headphone jack.
At the back, is the tiny dot next to the camera lens, which is an indicator that glows in blue to show the
battery is charging off the solar panel. We claim that one hour of solar charging should provide 2 hours of
standby and a little over 15 minutes of call time in 2G networks or alternatively 10 minutes of talk time.
The 1 inch touchscreen on the back lights up automatically when the phone is flipped over, and works as
a weather clock, a notification area, a music player.

Display and Multimedia

This smartphone is composed of 6-inch 18:9 IPS display with a full HD+ resolution of 2160 x
1080 which gives it a pixel density of 402ppi. The resolution gets bright enough to use under the sun. For
the audio department, the loudspeaker and the audio playback was loud and clear, it had a good amount of
bass, which is good for listening to music, watching movies, and of course hands-free calls.

OS, US, and Apps

It takes a simple and clean approach to Android, trading an app drawer for multiple home
screens, as well as keeping simple icons, a stylish notification, and control screens. One installed
application is the Eco Walk. It works with the Eco walk app and can be used to start a new walk, showing
you the number of steps and some stats at the end of the walk. Stats include how many calories you've
burned, how much fuel you've saved (and how much CO2 emissions the trip would have produced if you
drove). The units for this calculation are the number of trees saved.

VIII. Conclusion

People nowadays cannot last a day without using their phone, aside from chatting with other
people and browsing to their social media account, there are some important things they need to do with
the use of their phone, such as students which uses their phone for reviewing their lessons and for
business people that always needed to access their phone all the time and alike.

Not all phones have long battery life and due to long time of usage, our phone will be drained.
People will always look for ways on how to charge their phone, what if they are outside their home? We
are not always in the place where there are outlets that we can charge our phone. There is always an
instance that our phone will be drained while we are outside or far away from places with power outlets.

This solar powered smartphone will be develop to recharge its battery life with the help of solar
light. It will produce electricity in a friendly manner at the same time be accessible everywhere. In this
way, it will eliminate the use of chargers to make charging more convenient to cell phone users in an
environmental friendly way.
IX. Recommendation

The researchers highly recommend the solar-powered cellphone to everyone, especially to those
people who always need to access their phones. There are phones that is easily drained due to long time of
usage and there are cases that our phone will be drained while we are on the road, where there are no
available outlets for charging.

Using solar-powered smartphone is hassle free and it will be a big help because it comes with free
solar-powered power banks, in case your phone will be drained at night, you still have a remedy on how
to charge you phone. You just have to charge the solar-powered power bank at day so you can use it at
night.Just in case your phone will be drained in the absence of sunlight. This product is very convenient
because you can use it anytime and anywhere. And for the protection of the solar cell at the back of the
smartphone, the researchers recommended a sliding hard phone case, made up of shock proof materials. It
will be open sideways when it will be charge and close it when it is done.

X. Appendices

Survey
Figure 1 shows the results of a survey filled by 50 students in Far Eastern University. There are
38 students agreed that the short smartphone battery life is considered as a serious problem for any mobile
phone users, as they charge it twice or more a day. In fact, the issue of the mobile phone battery leads the
user to face other serious problems, one of these problems is affecting the environment by resuming a
huge amount of the nonrenewable sources (electricity), since each user needs minimum 12 volt to charge
a mobile phone once a day while the average life time of the battery depends on the user and the
applications used as well.

Moreover, the conducted survey shows that 84% of the students use their mobile phones 10 or
more hours a day. As a result, 72% of them need to charge their mobile phones twice or more a day
especially Smartphone users. One respondent mentioned that nowadays we can accomplish our duties
easily using our mobiles applications such as following emails and updating the social networking sites.
