Heat Transfer from Extended
Surfaces/Fins
Extended surface:
It referrers to a solid that experiences HT by
conduction (within its boundaries), convection
and/or radiation (b/w its boundaries &
surroundings)
A way of artificially increasing the surface area
of heat transmission.
Types of Fins:
1. Non-uniform x-section
2. Uniform x-section
H.T Through Variable x-section Fin
Consider Fig. 1 below. Let
Tb = Temp. of base of fin
T = surrounding temperature
Ac, As = x-sectional and surface area, respectively.
dAs = surface area of fin element
T = Temperature of element
qx = heat in the element
qx+dx , q conv. = conductive & convective heat out of the
element, respectively.
Thus for S.S system:
qin - qout = 0
H.T Through Variable x-section Fin Cont.

Fig. 1
H.T Through Variable x-section Fin Cont.
So, as per Fig.1:

qx qxdx dqconv. 0 (i)

(qx )dx hc dAs (T T ) 0 (ii )
x
But, q = -KAc(dT/thickness), where Ac = x-
sectional area, perpendicular to the heat flow.
So, Eq. (ii) leads to:

dT hc dAs
( Ac ) (T T ) 0 (iii )
x dx Kdx

PROBLEM
A long, thin copper rod 6.4 mm in diameter is
exposed to an environment at 20C.The base
temperature of the rod is 150C. The heat-transfer
coefficient between the rod and the environment is
24 W/m2.C. Calculate the heat given up by the
rod. Take K = 386 W/m.C.

(Ans: 10.04 W)
