Extracurricular Activities in Mathematics

I. Mathematics Club
Receive advice and suggestions from colleagues both in and outside school
Gain support from administration and a group of interested students
Recruit students through announcements, flyers, and student newspapers
Use students to determine frequency of meetings and topics for the meetings

II. Mathematics Teams

Schools compete directly against each other on a rotating basis
Competition questions for each level are intended to be appropriately challenging
yet within the scope of the students knowledge of mathematics.
The team coach should construct an entrance examination for all prospective
candidates for the mathematics team
Provide training sessions for the team- present topics normally not taught in the
secondary school but useful for solving typical problems encountered at
mathematics team meets

III. Mathematics Contests

Questions should be within reach of average mathematics students
Could be national, statewide, or local contests

IV. Mathematics Projects

Term paper or team project
Topic should be selected by the student
Periodic conferences with the teacher will ensure that the student is kept properly
on track

V. Mathematics Fair
Exhibitions of student mathematics projects are held
The prospect of eventual exhibit at a mathematics fair could serve as additional
motivation for students
Organized to allow students to present their papers (orally) before a group of
judges and winners are selected
VI. Cooperation with a University
Opportunity to work alongside mathematicians
Students could get firsthand experience of what mathematics is like beyond the
instructional classroom
Great opportunity for gifted students

VII. School Mathematics Magazine

Consists of some of the better student term papers
All students work on different aspects (taking pictures, layout, design, etc.)
VIII. Mathematics Assembly Program
Opportunity to exhibit some individual or group work to a larger audience
Perform skits, quiz show, or tricks method of multiplying 11 mentally, select
three digit number and follow the specified steps to attaint 1089, Mobius strips

IX. Guest Speaker Program

X. Class Trips of Mathematical Significance

XI. Peer Teaching Program

Conducted for all three-levels of teaching: on-grade teaching, remediation, and
enrichment
Can be individualized tutoring, involve small groups, or can supplement regular
class instruction

XII. The Bulletin Board

Stimulate interest in a mathematical topic or process
