Laboratory Policies
(updated June 2014)

1. Once registered in a lab section, you must attend that lab section each and
every week. Random switching between sections is not permitted. If you
miss a lab (and quiz) due to exceptional circumstances, you may make it up in
another lab section later that week, only with advance permission from the
lab instructor, and providing there is space in the lab. In order to obtain
permission to attend another lab, students are required to fill out a
standard authorization form available online. After that week, there is no
chance to do the quiz or lab, and the quiz will be recorded as zero.

2. Timeliness: Arrive at the lab on time. Students who arrive late for lab may
receive a mark penalty, or in the case of repeat infractions, may be refused
entry to the lab. Important information regarding the lab procedures is
given at the beginning of the lab. Take your time in the lab and be sure that
you follow the correct procedures, to decrease the chance that you will
make mistakes and have to repeat a procedure.

3. Preparedness: Prepare for each lab in advance by thoroughly reading all lab
material. A checklist is provided with the material for each lab in the
Supplement to assist you in the preparation for each lab. In addition to the
lab material in the Supplement, you are responsible for all relevant material
in the Exercises and Review Sheets in the Lab Manual (unless specifically
omitted).

4. Attire: Arrive appropriately attired in full-length lab coat, proper footwear

and clothing covering the entire leg for all labs. Footwear includes a closed
shoe covering the entire foot with a sole thick enough to prevent broken
glass penetration. Lab instructors will refuse admittance to students who
are improperly attired.

5. Demeanor: A prepared student is one who interacts well with their peers and
Instructor in the lab, contributes to discussions appropriately, and shares in
the leadership of their group. It is expected that students conduct
themselves in a respectful manner at all times. Verbal abuse will not be
tolerated.

6. Equipment and bench space: Keep your workspace tidy and uncluttered, and
leave the area clean when leaving the lab. Handle all equipment and models
with the utmost care. Re-assemble all models, wash all glassware, and return
all microscope slides, models and equipment to the appropriate location. If you
notice a model or piece of equipment in need of repair, please inform the
Instructor.

7. Familiarize yourself with all safety regulations. Students who do not comply
with safety regulations will be asked to leave the lab.

8. The use of electronic devices (including calculators, cell phones, personal

computers, recording devices and MP3s) in lab quiz or test is strictly
forbidden. Any student using such devices in a quiz or test will forfeit the
test paper.

9. The use of cell phones or recording devices in the lab class is strictly
forbidden unless prior permission has been granted by the instructor.

10. Weekly quizzes are given in the first 15 minutes of each laboratory period
covering material from the previous lab unless otherwise indicated. Please
arrive promptly each lab as there will be no additional time given to complete
the quiz.

11. Lab tests must be written at the time assigned for your lab section. There
will be no re-writes for missed lab tests for any reason.

12. Correct spelling of anatomical and physiological terms is essential. Part marks
will be deducted for minor spelling errors and full marks will be deducted for
critical spelling errors on lab quizzes and lab tests.

13. Plan to fully utilize the three lab hours each week. As a general rule, students
will work in pairs in the laboratory. When lab activities and Review Sheets are
finished, the remaining time is for review of previous lab material. Complete
the Review Sheets on a weekly basis: before lab, or in the lab if time permits.
Finding the answers to Review Sheet Questions requires a search of the
material in the lab manual or textbook, or interpretation of data from lab

exercises. Check weekly with the lab instructors regarding Review Sheet
questions for which you are unable to find answers.

14. Academic Integrity and the Code of Student Conduct:

Any form of academic dishonesty in quizzes, tests or assignments in this
course will not be tolerated. Note the following excerpt from the Mount
Royal University Code of Student Conduct:
a. Academic dishonesty is a violation of the very premise upon which
academic life is based and cannot be tolerated within the university
community. Quite simply, it is the giving, taking or presenting of
information or material that unethically or dishonestly aids oneself or
another on any work which under normal circumstances is to be
considered in the determination of a grade or the compilation of
academic requirements or the enhancement of that student's record
or academic career. Academic dishonesty is a destructive force that
can diminish the reputation of an institution and undermine the
achievements of those who teach and learn in such an environment.
