STD: XII PRACTICE PAPER - I MARKS: 80

DATE: SUBJECT : ENGLISH DURATION: 3hrs

SECTION A: (Reading skills, Grammar, Note-making and Summary)

Q. 1(A) Read the following extract and answer the questions given below it: (11 Marks)
I was 33 at the time, a doctor in the West End of London. I had been lucky in advancing
through several arduous Welsh mining assistantships to my own practice acquired on the
installment plan from a dear old family physician who, at our first interview, gazed at my cracked
boots and frayed cuffs and trusted me.
I think I wasnt a bad doctor. My patients seemed to like me not only the nice old ladies with
nothing wrong with them, who lived near the Park and paid handsomely for my cheerful besides manner,
but the cabbies, porters and deadbeats in the mews and back streets of Bays water, who paid nothing and
often had a great deal wrong with them.
Yet there was something though I treated everything that came my way, read all the medical
journals, attended scientific meetings, and even found time to take complex postgraduate diplomas I
wasnt quite sure of myself. I didnt stick at anything for long. I had successive ideas of specializing in
dermatology, in aural surgery, in pediatrics, but discarded them all. While I worked all day and half of most
nights, I really lacked perseverance, stability.
One day I developed indigestion. After resisting my wifes entreaties for several weeks, I went
casually to consult a friendly colleague. I expect a bottle of bismuth and an invitation to bridge. I received
instead the shock of my life: a sentence to six months complete rest in the country on a milk diet; I had a
gastric ulcer.
The place of exile, chosen after excruciating contention; was a small farmhouse near the village of
Tarbert in the Scottish Highlands. Imagine a lonely whitewashed steading set on a rain-drenched loch amid
ferocious mountains rising into grey mist, with long-horned cattle, like elders of the kirk, sternly munching
thistles in the foreground. That was Fyne Farm. Conceive of a harassed stranger in city clothes arriving with
a pain in his middle and a box of peptonizing powders in his suitcase. That was I.

Q2 (A) Read the following extract and answer the questions given below it: (11 Marks)
To me, a world without poverty means that every person would have the ability to take care of his or
her own basic life needs. In such a world nobody would die of hunger or suffer from malnutrition. This is a
goal world leaders have been calling for decades, but have never set out any way of achieving it.
Today 40,000 children die each day around the world from hunger-related diseases. In a poverty-free
world, no children would die of such causes.
Everybody in every part of the globe would have access to education and health-care services
because he or she would be able to afford them. Unlike today, the state would not be required to provide
free or subsidized health-care or schooling.
All state organizations created to provide free or subsidized services for the poor would no longer be
required and could be done away with. Thus, no need for welfare, or local welfare agencies, or the national
welfare department. No need for hand-outs, no soup-kitchens, no food stamps, no free schools, no free
hospitals care, no begging in the streets.
State safety-net programme would have no rationale for existence because no one would live on
charity any more. State-run social security programmes, income-support programmes would be
unnecessary.
Social structures in a poverty-free world would, of course, be quite different from those exist in a
poverty-ridden world. But nobody would be at the mercy of anyone else, and that is what would make all
the difference between a world without poverty and one riddled with it.
Finally, a poverty-free world would be economically much stronger and far more stable than the
world today.
One-fifth of the worlds inhabitants who today live a life of extreme poverty would become income
earners and income-spenders. They would generate extra demand in the market to make the world economy
grow. They would bring their creativity and innovations into the market-place to increase the worlds
productive capacity.
Since nobody would ever become poor, expect on a temporary and limited basis, the economy would
probably not go through extreme swings. We would avoid boom-and-bust cycles and be able to surmount
man-made disaster with greater ease.

1. What according to the writer is a world without poverty? (1)

2. How will the poverty free world be? (2)
3. How will the world economy grow? (2)
4.What is your opinion and contribution would be towards poverty free world? (2)

(Change to positive degree of comparison) (1)
(ii) State run social security programmes would have no rationale for existence (Rewrite beginning

(iii) Every person would have the ability to take care of his or her basic life needs (use a suitable modal
auxiliary) (1)
6.Find a word in the passage which is the antonym of (a) overcome (b) donation (1)

Q.2 (B) Read the following extract carefully and draw a tree- diagram on the Types of Tomatoes.
(4 marks)

In most greenhouses you will find tomatoes growing on. It is surprising that we have an irrepressible
urge to grow them. They are classified into two types:- Growth type and fruit type. There are two varieties
in growth type cordon and bush. Cordon is single stemmed plant which requires support using acane or
string. It grows 6ft or more. Where height is a problem grow a bush type. It grows 1-3ft high but its growth
is rather untidy. The fruit type varieties are hybrid, Beefsteak and cherry. The hybrid variety has two
important advantages they are generally heavier yielding and also have a high degree of disease resistance.
The Beefsteak variety produces the large meaty tomatoes- which are very popular in the U. S. They are
excellent for sandwiches but not for frying. The cherry or bite sized tomatoes is much smaller but the flower
is outstanding.

Q.3(A) Read the following extract and answer the questions given below it: (11Marks)

These days the values of life are brushed aside as matters of the past. India which was looked upon
as a land of spirituality, ancient traditions and culture has given way to the global trend of materialism. An
individual is measured in terms of his wealth and not on the basis of his goodness. The present day
education pattern of India has lost its sense of purpose and direction. Maximum efforts are taken by teachers
to develop the analytical power and logical reasoning. In other words, the collegiate education is for
economic empowerment of the younger generation. Thus all efforts are directed to the needs of the
industrial sector. This has resulted in mindless commercialization of education. Basic values of life have no
place in education. The goal of converting an ordinary individual into a person of good character through
internal transformation has given way to the goal of mental and physical development alone. A good
educational system should help in the development of character. When character building. The duty of
education is ignored, it becomes incomplete education. Therefore we must receive the value-based
education. In the philosophical context Value has ethical, moral and spiritual relevance. In general the
factors that shape an ordinary individual into a person of good character can be called values. Values should
enable an individual to distinguish between good and bed, justice and injustice, cruelty and kindness and
protect him from distinctive activities. In other words a person with values will have humanism in attitude
and actions. By using innovative methods teachers can integrate values with general education. Teacher
should never teach values as a separate subject. The teaching tools can be music, drama, story, discussion,
charts, models and prayer. If value based education becomes the universal pattern in India, the future
generation will not only intellectuals of a high order but will also be persons with human mind and heart.

1. How has India changed? (1)

2.What is the focus of education, today? (2)
3.Why must value based education be revived? (2)
4. Do you think it is possible for teachers to integrate values with general education? How? (2)
5.Do as directed:
(i) The present day education pattern in India has lost its sense of purpose.(Underline the verb and state its
tense) (1)
(ii) The future generation will not only be intellectuals of a high order but also be persons with human mind

(iii) All efforts are directed to the needs of the industrial sector.
(Rewrite beginning with They direct.)(1)

Section- C
(Rapid Reading and Composition)

Q5 (A) Read the given extract and rewrite it form the point of view of the boy who receives this
letter. (4 Marks)
I hope youre preparing for your exams, she wrote back. After all theres not much we can do
about a skeleton thats been hidden away for ten or fifteen years. Anyway, there were two newspapers in the
cupboard. The Daily chronicle, published from Delhi on January 18, 1930, is complete. That was four years
before you were born. The main headline refers to the Bareilly Train Disaster in which thirteen passengers
were killed and nineteen seriously injured. There are also two pages of book reviews, including a review of
The Glenlitten Murder by E. Phillips Oppenheim. I think you have read some of his books. Books on the
Riviera.
The other book is about the spirit world, and the possibility of communicating with those who have
passed from this material world. Perhaps we can summon up the spirit of the person who inhabited the
skeleton? She could tell us how she met her end. Old Miss Kellner holds sances and table-rappings. But
how would she summon up a spirit if she doesnt know who it was in the first place?
The second newspaper incomplete is the Civil and Military Gazette of March 2, 1930. This was
published from Lahore, and as you know, Mr. Kipling worked on it a few earlier. The front page is missing,
but page 5 carries and ad for a film called The Awakening of Love starring Vilma Banky. Vilma was a
popular heroine when I was a girl. Nothing much else of interest except for a small item under the headline
Elder Murder Sequel:
Patna Feb 28:
The chief Justice and Mr. Justice Scoope have dismissed the appeal of O W Harrison, who was
charged with the murder of Mr. W P Elder in July and confirmed the sentence of death passed on him by the
Sessions Judge of Manbhun.
Nothing to do with our skeleton, of course, because Mr. Elder was buried at Jamshedpur, while
Harrison occupies an unknown grave. And in any case our skeleton is a womans. But I remember the case.
Harrison was having an affair with Mr. Elders wife. When confronted by the outraged husband. Harrison
took out his revolver and shot the poor man. All very sordid. No mystery there for you. Concentrate on your
studies. Second term exams must be near. I am sending you a parcel of socks. I know they dont last very
long on you.

Q5 (B) Convert the extract into a continuous write-up (120 words) (4 marks)

Read the following passage and extend it by a adding a paragraph in about 120 words (4 Marks )

I am proud to be Sir Rowlands son answered Orlando angrily. And I would not change my places
to be the heir of this dukedom.
The Duke and his lords went away, leaving Orlando alone with Rosalind and Celia. Celia was angry
with her father for speaking so unkindly to Orlando. Would I have done this in my fathers place? she said
to Rosalind.
My father loved Sir Rowland as much as his own soul. Rosalind said to Celia. Andthe entire
world agreed with him. If I had known that this young man was Sir Rowlands son I should have begged
him with tears not to take so great a risk.
Let us go and speak to Orlando. Said gentle Celia. I am ashamed of my fathers rude and angry
words.
The two girls went up to Orlando and praised him for his bravery. Rosalind took a gold chain from
her neck and gave it to him. I would like to give you more. She said, but I am not rich. Then she and
Celia went away.
Orlando, however, could not forget them. He had already fallen in love with the fair Rosalind, but he
could not stay at the Dukes palace. His friends warned him that Frederick was angry and jealous of him.
They told Orlando to leave the dukedom, because the Duke meant to do him harm.
Frederick also began to treat Rosalind unkindly. He was jealous of her. The people praised her
virtues and were sorry for her because she was separated from her own father, so the Duke pretended that he
did not trust her. She was planning against him, he said, and she must leave the court at once. If you are
found within twenty miles from here. You shall die, he said.
Celia argued with her father and begged him to allow Rosalind to stay. If she is your enemy, then so
am I, Celia cried. We have always slept, learned, played and eaten together. I know that Rosalind is to be
trusted.
But the Duke would not listen to his daughter, and repeated his orders to Rosalind. Then Celia told
him that if he sent Rosalind away he must send her away, too, because she could not live without her cousin.
