Learning Analytics A New Technology Investigation

Despite the fact evaluating student information is not a new routine, the area of learning

analytics has only lately expanded extensive sustenance between data researchers and teaching

professionals. In the approaching years, as learning analytics stages develop progressively

intricate and operative, results of learning analytics will have an important effect on the growth

and enhancement of both K-12 and higher education, particularly in the design of adapted and

online learning platforms (Briggs, 2013). Learning analytics is the use of data, investigation, and

analytical demonstrating to advance education and knowledge. Learning analytics examines data

from various sources, looking for patterns and correlations that can provide insight to learners,

instructors, and those who support them about how to improve learning (Educause, 2017).

Recently, learning analytics (LA) has drawn the attention of academics, researchers, and

administrators. This interest is motivated by the need to better understand teaching, learning,

intelligent content, and personalization and adaptation (Siemens, 2013). In this way, learning

analytics can benefit scholars, faculty, and institutes reach their individual goals. This paper

reflects on how the technology is being used in training, the research fields that have contributed

technologies and methodologies to the change of learning analytics, pedagogical value it brings

to professional teaching and learning, and representations for organizing analytics in educational

settings (Anderson, 2017).

Using learning analytics to measure training really is a broad and far-reaching topic in the

field of learning of one of many ways (Anderson, 2017). Engagement data looks at how your

training programs are being used by learners such as how often are they logging in or what

the course completion rates and test scores are. These are all important factors to look at because

they almost always lead to learner success (2017). Before and after snapshots of performance

and efficiency data offers critical and impactful data that can be tied to things like ROI.

Improvements, enhancements, or major overhauls to older (yet essential) existing training

programs sometimes lead to a reduction time in training, which allows learners to become

productive much more quickly. Employee turnover is one of the biggest expenses organizations

face today (Xi, 2017). Most turnover occurs within the first 90 days, so you can just imagine how

training plays a crucial role in job retention during this critical early period.

In todays environment, measuring training really is no longer an option; its more of a

requirement. Thankfully, LMS capabilities have come a long way in their ability to collect

meaningful data and are an essential tool for measuring learning analytics (Xi, 2017). Too often

it is educations own practices that limit the broader uptake of new technologies. Whether its

insufficient ongoing professional development or the reluctance to accept the need for digital

media literacy, significant challenges stand in the way of smooth assimilation. If youre not sure

where to start, I would start by looking at the consumers LMS data collection and reporting

capabilities and take it from there.
