Brief Literature Review:

Distance education is an education type that students who take their classes online via

Internet. In the past, it was a little bit different from now. It started to be used in the early 1700s.

In the 1800s, women used it to take an education from their home. In the early 1900s, colleges

and universities started to give and offer courses via correspondence. First of all the University

of Chicago accepted and allowed the students who is living off campus that they can send their

assignments and exchange their lessons with using this technique. And then, in 1906, the

elementary school which is Calvert School of Baltimore became the first school to offer

correspondence classes. Actually, distance education has a very long story, because of this

situation it improved based on developing of the technology.

In addition, distance education has many advantages and disadvantages for students,

teachers and parents. Advantages of distance educations affects students beneficially such as they
do not have to use transportation to take the class because they can join the class from at their

home, coffee shop or office. It provides to increase accessing the higher education for students.

They also can send their homework assignments through to due date which is given by the

instructor. This situation makes them more comfortable to do and submit their assignments. On

the other hand, students should realize that their responsibility to check often their school tool to

see that what they need to do or have to submit, so it is kind of disadvantages of the distance

education. For the instructor, distance education is not an easy way to follow students because

they have to check and be available to reply the students' questions. One of the article says about

the disadvantages of the distance education that it requires many efforts to make it true such as

need for stuff training, cost of students, cost of entry, labor intensity etc. These points are very

important to make the class efficient for students, so if it is not enough good at these points, the

effectiveness of class decreases. Moreover, some of the parents think that distance education

provides them to interest in their children classes. In this case, it is an advantage of it for parents

who would like to follow the classes of their children.

Distance education is that the type of education that the students do not have to be in the

class physically, so they join the class online with Internet. Actually, some of the class can be

hybrid, so students some of the time need to attend class physically. The main point is that the

distance education is very common way to take classes for students and give classes for teachers.

Due to improving of the technology, people like to use this way. Although many people like to

take distance education, some people do not prefer it. This situation becomes because of the

advantages and disadvantages of the distance education. Some of the advantages are according to

resources; time management and personal responsibility, problem-solving skill, group focused

problem solving, self directed learning etc. Also there are many disadvantages of the distance

education according to resources; connection problems, communication problems between

teachers and students, social isolation etc. The main idea of all the resources that I chose and

review the brief of the history of the distance education and its disadvantages and advantages for

teachers, students and many parents.

Reflection:
In my opinion, distance education is very useful technique for taking classes online.

Sometimes, it can be hard to make it under the control, but it provides to improve responsibility

feelings. Checking the due dates, grades, and homework assignments or discussion topics make

me to feel that I need to have a schedule or plan to continue regularly. Also, the other thing that I

like for online course I do not have to go to school to take it. I can join the webinars easily and

ask my questions during the webinars. Actually, these are the positive points for the distance

education for me, but it has many disadvantages, too. For example, sometimes I send an email to

my professors if I got confused about many situations and I want to get feedback at that time, but

I cannot able to get it through to my professors reply my email. Waiting one or more day make

me excited and nervous. So that, I am agree with the article that I choose for the topic of the

advantages and disadvantages of the distance education. These articles are right to explain all the

pros and cons.

I had many good experience about the distance education and I got only one bad

experience about that. The bad one is that when I was taking my exam, the connection of Internet

disconnected. Due to this condition, I failed and I sent an email to my professor the situation that
I have. She gave me a different exam, but it was very difficult from the other one. I was really

upset for taking the exam online, so it was the disadvantage of the distance education. Now, I am

a sophomore student and I am still taking the online classes, because I think the advantages are

much more than disadvantages.

I would implement this research in my career to care the advantages and disadvantages

of the distance education. I learned a lot of pros of online education and want to use it for my

students to affect them beneficially. I will try to solve the disadvantages that my students have. I

want to give lecture or homework assignments with this way because we are in the technology

age, so not to use the online tools is not logical.

The important thing is use this way clearly to make it easy and understandable for

students. For example, I want to be a math teacher and I can use the distance education with

giving online homework assignments. Also, I can make tutoring for my students with giving

online class and I can give options that students can join who wants to extra credit from my class.

If students want to get extra credit they can join and reinforce their knowledge from the class

which is in the school.
