The blind king, crazed by wealth,13 offered riches and possessions,

At length, on Dhanakoa lake, immaculate and shimmering,

And engage in the practices of yogic discipline.

You created the cause for expulsion from your homeland
And departed in search of solitude: homage to you!

In the cave in Pacla, 17 Guardian of the Buddhas Teachings,

At the site of Gau Sh21 you practiced union and liberation,

Gaining renown as Showa Shnu, The Youthful Who Escaped.

Then, in Varanasi22 with the sage Arjuna,

You mastered mathematics and astrology: homage to you!

In Padmvat23 with the son of Jvakumra,

sowa rigpa gyats ta ch n
You perfected the far-reaching art of medicine,

You learned the skills of craftsmanship and the art of alchemy.

You brought all to completion, feigning study and training,

From Vajrasattva you received the Mahyoga Tantras

And perfected the great resplendence of the Sambhogakya.

Taught the Dharma to Majurmitra.

Together, the two of you received the categories Of the Space and Pith Instructions of the
Great Perfection.

As foretold by Avalokitevara, you appeared as Brahm

There you received all the astrology tantras,

You travelled on to Butchers Village, adopted their behaviour,
And effectively tamed all the citizens who lived there

When the kins at Dhanakoa were safely under your control,

There, this mother of all-embracing space,

Discovered the flesh of a seven-times Brahmin. 34

You went to Singhala, 38 to ryadevas miraculous birth place.

Teacher, prophet, you ripen and liberate others: homage to you!

With the flesh of a seven-times Brahmin you attained accomplishments.

Tethering the sun in the sky, you ripened the barmaid Vinas
And secured her liberation.

Then you rendered assistance to the King: homage to you!

Hastening your return to Uiyna,

You transformed their inferno into a lake,

Known as Bhiku Saukhyadeva, you visited the land of drummers. 43

With your consort Klasiddh, you attained accomplishment there.

You cared for Hkara, and brought forth his realization.

You travelled on to the land of Kashmir,

lhacham dharma bodhi jinlab p
Where you gave your blessing to King Dharmokas daughter.
Thus, to the princess Dharmabodh,

Quite miraculous, you tamed the prince and his wife of the Golden Land,

Which caused the Buddhas teachings to spread in all directions: homage to you!

Further, in Kmarpa, and also in Khotan,

ma ru a sha dru sha sham bha la
In Maru, Aadrua, and likewise in ambala,

In Shang Shung, Persia, Tukhara, Rukma, and beyond,

Afterwards you restored everything, exactly as before.

Known as Lotus Ascetic, Desire Supreme and Mighty,

Lotus Protector of Beings, Protector of Enlightened Activity,

As Meaningful Lotus Lasso, and Radiant Splendour,

And Padma ombhi: homage to you!

Known as White Lotus, Lotus Skull-Garland and Padma Vajra,

As all these rapturous noble ones, your twenty emanations,

In the place known as Hot Valley46 you tamed The Four Great Earth Ladies. 47

You revealed a profound treasure, as foretold by Vajrapi.

King Suryasiha welcomed you, received you in Bodhgaya,

Trisong Deutsen, emanation of Majur,

Took birth in Tibet as the result of previous aspirations.

Reaching full maturity, he joined the supreme noble family,

chkhor shyengpar shy la chaktsal lo
And his heart developed the wish to establish the Dharma in Tibet: homage to you!

Having requested his subjects to decide on a site,

tsuklak shyeng sol bi j sach tsal
The King sent the sage known as Birj to inspect the land.
His purpose and intent was the construction of a temple.

zahor yul n khenchen shyiwa tso
He invited ntarakita to come from Zahor

chendrang gy shyin jal la chaktsal lo
And with joy, when he arrived, he welcomed the great scholar: homage to you!
[Chapters 55-57]

Of the aspirations they had made together, lifetimes ago.

Compassionately you accepted and made your way to Tibet,

Taming all the countless gods and demons on the way: homage to you!

Arriving at the Tolung Valley, you conjured the Shongp Lhachu spring.

zur khar ch dram chgyal khor ch jal
And on the river bank at Surkar 48 you first met the Dharma King.

chak la ma cham dorj gur shyeng shing
His retinue was with him and, when he failed to bow,
You sang vajra verses and displayed wondrous miracles,

Inspiring great faith in his mind: homage to you!
[Chapter 61]

gyalp gt gy shak chrten shyeng
Bowing low with devotion, and to show his contrition,
The king commanded that five stupas be built.49

And entrusted the ngas with the protection of Samys wealth.

The spirits gathered earth and stone
To be laid as Samys foundation: homage to you!

Samys three storeys and surrounding temples
Were a clear representation of our own world-system
Mount Meru in the centre, then the four continents,
Subcontinents, the sun and the moon, and everything encircled

At Samy Chimpu, 52 in your wisdom you tamed the ngas,

Under your guidance, the temple bell was hung, and

The merit of such beings will multiply beyond imagining.

And from him received profound teachings.
But his ministers were evil, consumed with jealousy,

And, fearing a murder plot against Vairocana,
The king himself pretended to drown him.

Thus, at great risk, the sovereign acted from compassion: homage to you!

Secretly, in his summer-house, the King continued to listen

The king, skilled in means, proclaimed the establishment of the Two Doctrines.58

He dispatched the lotsawas Ka, Chog, and Ma 59 to seek a great scholar,

And accordingly they made the journey to Kapilavastu: homage to you!

Vimalamitra was waiting, crown jewel of five hundred scholars,

A further hundred great paitas were invited to Tibet,

Is the fruit of cultivating the two-fold bodhicitta.

And so, in the awesome splendour of this bodhisattva activity
I rejoice from the depths of my heart.

To the supreme non-arising and non-ceasing Vajrakya,

And dredge unobstructed the deepest depths of Sasra!

By myself and others, whether defiled or undefiled,

Hence, filled with devotion, one-pointed, I pray:

gekm nyurdu tobpar jingyi lob
Bless me, that I may swiftly be free from all adversity!!

the narration of the life and liberation of the Guru of Uiyna. And, the meaning of The Sheldrakma, The Crystal
