Observation Questions for ELL/LEP student(s)

1. What techniques/methods/strategies do you see being

used with the ELL/LEP student(s)? Are they effective?
Why or why not? (Either specifically for the ELL
student(s) or in whole class/small group instruction)
There are a lot of methods being used. I see many visuals in the
classroom, and clear cut instructions. There is a lot of emphasis on
writing and good handwriting. There are many references provided so
that students do not have to ask the teacher for help every time they
have a question. They can figure out how to solve them on their own.
This leads to even more learning especially when it comes to
vocabulary and writing.

2. Do you notice any student behaviors that you would

consider out of the ordinary? Please describe in detail.
(This applies to both the ELL student(s) and other
classroom students)
I notice that there are students who are very quiet and not willing to
participate in class. Especially group discussions.

3. What type of interactions do you see between the ELL

student(s), other classroom students, and the teacher(s)?
Please describe in detail.
I do not see many interactions that are different between the ESL
student and the other students. They are able to communicate and share
thoughts effectively. However, I notice the ESL student can be very
quiet and keeps to himself.
4. Identify resources/materials that are being used with the
ELL student(s). Please describe in detail how the ELL
student is using them. Do they appear to be effective?
Explain.

The teacher in the class uses a smart board. This helps with visuals and
larger font using simple sentences. There are also a lot of
manipulatives in the classroom and hands on activities. Another
resource that the classroom has is computers with headphones.
Students are able to listen and read along with a book. The students get
the chance to learn using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic strategies. I
think this is a great way to help all students learn well including ESL
and ELL students.

5. Does the classroom environment seem to be

comfortable for the ELL student(s)? Please describe the
environment and explain how you made your decision.
Yes I think that the environment is comfortable for the ELL students.
There are many different ways that the student learn, and I noticed that
the students are rarely put on the spot to speak unless they have time to
prepare beforehand. The atmosphere of the classroom is very
welcoming and encouraging. The students are all on different levels
and their progress is individually tracked. This helps all of the students
greatly. For example, the students are working on a unit on bugs. Each
student got to choose a bug book on their individual reading level.

6. Whats the comfort level of the ELL student(s) in

regards to the English language? What observations help
you arrive at your decision? Refer to the Vocabulary
Performance Indicators. At what level would you place
the ELL student? How did you decide on that level?

I think the ESL student is fairly comfortable in the classroom. The

student is quiet but does not seem to be uncomfortable in the
classroom. I see that the student participates in class and has good
handwriting for his grade.
