History and Key Milestones of KSMA

77 years ago, The Kyrgyz State Medical Institute (KSMI) was opened on the 1st
September 1939 in city of Bishkek (formerly Frunze) with recruitment of 200 students. The
establishment of the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute was invaluably contributed to by the 1-st
Moscow Medical Institute, High Medical Schools of Saint-Petersburg, Alma-Ata, Tashkent and
other Medical institutions as well. They provided expertise and organizational assistance, medical
guidelines and training books as well as faculty staff to do a full-time job for the Kyrgyz State
Medical Institute.
Departments of CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) History and
Political Economy, Regular Anatomy, Biology, Histology, General Chemistry, Physics, Foreign
Languages and others were opened. 16 teachers worked at these Departments. The 2-nd Kharkov
General Medicine and Dentistry Institute and the Moscow Dentistry Institute were evacuated to
Kyrgyzstan during the Great Patriotic War (World War II), which caused hardships in the Kyrgyz
State Medical Institutes performance. Terms of training were shortened to 4-4,5 years.

Year 1943:
the 1st Batch of KSMI

In 1943 the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute (KSMI) had produced the 1st Batch of 250
doctors.

Year 1948:
In the Post-War years starting from 1948 terms of training were extended to 6 -
years. In the following 2-nd year of studies the KSMI launched official end-of-year examinations
on Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Biochemistry.

Year 1950:
In 1950, the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute (KSMI) increased admission of
students and started training of doctors in specific areas of specialization.
Year 1960:
In 60, the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute (KSMI) started a programmed control of
proficiency with technical means employed. This period had seen the development of scientific
back-ups for gaining expertise in disciplines such as elements of training, levels of their
mastering, graphology structures etc.
Year 1970:
Research Focused on Medicine & Medical Education

In 70, the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute (KSMI) became the leading Medical
School of the USSR in effective solution of issues as Physiology, Pathology, Adaptation of
Human Organism to High Altitude Conditions.
Moving into research was a natural progression in the evolution of the KSMI in its
continual quest for academic excellence. KSMI thrust areas for research are: Environmental
Health, Cancer Biology, Stem Cell Research, Active Bio-molecules and Cellular Mechanisms,
Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery Systems etc.
While Medical and Healthcare-related research continues to be an area of focus,
KSMI was also making progress in a new area of research that of Medical Education.
Qualitatively new way was paved for establishment of links with Research Centers
of the Soviet Republics resulting in conclusion of agreements on creative cooperation with many
Research Institutes and High Schools of the Former Soviet Union. Scientists of our Kyrgyz State
Medical Institute conducted a number of joint Research Missions at Republican Research
Performance Sites and Laboratories.

Year 1980:
In 80, the Educational-Methodical and Research process was considerably
improved. The Kyrgyz State Medical Institute entered the World Scientific Community bringing
up research issues relative to Medicine in Mountains, which moved KSMI toward strengthening
of integration into Research Environment.

Year 1996:
KSMI Becomes Kyrgyz State Medical Academy (KSMA)

In connection to structural changes in 1996 the Kyrgyz State Medical Institute

(KSMI) was reorganized by the Decree of President of Kyrgyz Republic to become the Kyrgyz
State Medical Academy. The Administration took measures to ensure Academy's transition into
Market Economy reflecting in a Contractual System of Training. At that, Modernization of
Educational-Methodical and Research process have been under way.

Year 2000:
KSMA'S Unique Curriculum - International Standard
In 2000 the KSMA started introduction of new Curricula designed in line with
International standards. The KSMA Curriculum was unique not just in its teaching and learning
methods, but also in the fact that it was designed to be universally accepted by the worlds best
Medical Universities and colleges. And its unique Self-directed Learning approach taught
students to break away from teacher-dependent learning and to be responsible for their own
learning

KSMA's Dentistry

Dentistry is a professional career dedicated to the evaluation, diagnosis,

prevention and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial
area (upper and lower jaws), associated structures next to these areas and their impact on the
human body. Oral health is widely considered necessary for complete general health. As a dentist,
you are a member of the healthcare team providing advice to the public about oral healthcare.
Your job will also include restoring function to badly decayed, broken or infected teeth, replacing
missing teeth with dentures, bridges or implant-supported prostheses, treatment of oral diseases
such as inflammatory diseases of gum and supporting tissues, destructive diseases such as cancer
of the oral tissues, the aligning and straightening of teeth.
Dentists work is not confined to filling and pulling out teeth. The care that
dentists are trained to provide greatly improves the quality of their patients lives. Oral diseases
like tooth decay, gum diseases and oral cancer, malocclusion (when teeth in the upper and lower
jaws do not fit properly), genetic deformities and anomalies affecting the oro-facial complex, and
other oral problems can cause a great deal of discomfort, pain and adversely affect oral functions
such as chewing food, talking or playing of musical instruments. A patients appearance, self-
esteem and confidence can also be greatly enhanced through various types of dental procedures.
Dentists are usually not required to be on call at night nor to make house calls.
Thus it is easier for dentists to achieve a perfect balance between their professional and personal
lives.
A wide variety of teaching-learning approaches are employed in the dental
program to provide a stimulating environment for learning. These include lectures, problem
based learning (PBL), practical classes, patient simulation practical, clinical skills sessions, e-
learning, independent learning, clinical dental treatment of patients and postings to various
hospitals and clinics.
