DELF and DALF: internationally recognized French language proficiency certifications

with lifelong validity.

DELF and DALF are official certifications awarded by the French Ministry of
Education to certify proficiency in the French language of non-native speakers of
French. The certificates are internationally recognized and often used by foreign
ministries of education (Ministry of Human Resource Development in India) to assess
the linguistic skills in the French language.
They are composed of 6 independent diplomas that correspond to the levels of
language proficiency of the Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages (CEFRL). The 6 certifications are completely independent i.e.,
candidates can register for the examination of their choice, according to their level. At
each level, 4 skills are evaluated: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

What are the different levels of certification?

DELF A1: Breakthrough or beginner
DELF A2: Waystage or elementary
DELF B1: Threshold or intermediate
DELF B2: Vantage or upper intermediate
DALF C1: Effective Operational Proficiency or Advanced
DALF C2: Mastery or proficiency

Five exams are proposed to the French-speaking people:

Diplme dtudes en langue franaise, DELF (for all age groups)
Diplme approfondi en langue franaise, DALF (for all age groups)
Diplme dtudes en langue franaise for teenagers, DELF JUNIOR
Diplme dtudes en langue franaise for children (aged 8 to 12), DELF PRIM
Diplme dtudes en langue franaise for professionals, DELF PRO

The DELF junior is a special version in which themes used are chosen to suit preadolescent
and adolescent candidates. These diplomas are structured in the same way as the other
versions, and the level assessed is the same.

The DELF Pro is designed for candidates seeking initial employment opportunities or
promotion within a French-speaking work environment. All candidates are welcome to apply,
whether in initial training or continuing education. The examination topics are based on the
world of work. There are no entry requirements: candidates can take the examination at the
level of their choosing.

The DELF Prim is intended for children learning French as a Foreign Language at primary

Where can one take these exams?

In order respond to the increasing demand, the Institut franais en Inde coordinates DELF
and DALF exams, along with the network of the Alliances Franaises in India.
In addition to the Alliance network the DELF DALF exam can be taken in Lucknow (U.P.) at
I.T.S. (Institute of Tourism Studies).
Also, in New Delhi/NCR students of Delhi Public School can take the DELF Junior exams at
DPS (Delhi Public School) Mathura Road and DPS Noida.

correspond in every respect to the DELF A2 examinations. Indeed, the format, the kind of tests and the assessed level
are the same. Only the graphics evolved: the layout and the presentation of subjects were improved. So, the more
recent subjects are better looking and more pleasant, in particular at the level of the images, than these three DELF
A2 past exam papers.
