Prompt #2

The Struggles of College Students

College. College is viewed as the key to independence to most teenagers. Getting away

from parents, the ability to have fun, and not have a curfew, and so much more. But in reality, if

a student is going to college for independence, then they will not reach their full potential in the

classroom. College students struggle with procrastination, money , and lack of responsibility.

A study has found that almost 80 percent of college students procrastinate on their school

work. Procrastination is led by a lack of self motivation, and can cause the student to develop

stress or feel overwhelmed. This is not healthy, it can affect the students social life, part time

job, and more importantly academic success. The best way to resolve this issue is better time

management. College students should use their free time, when they are not doing anything, to

try to get some schoolwork done. Instead of stressing until the night before an assignment is due.

College is expensive, and with a majority of students going full time, having a job to

make money for basic necessities can be a serious conflict. Also many college students have to

use student loans to pay for college, which puts them in debt when they graduate. This should

not be a stress that college students should deal with, while trying to continue their education

after high school. It can lead to many students failing classes, or even dropping out of school.

Although there is not a resolution for this problem, some methods can help into making finances

as less stressful as possible. Students should apply for scholarships, and grants. As well

as finding a part time job that is flexible with the students school schedule.

Some college students lack responsibility. When students first leave their home, their

parents will not be there with them to discipline their child for bad grades, attendance, etc. Some

students do not adapt to this easily, and begin to slack off in school. This is a serious problem

that could lead to students failing classes, and being released from their school.

Central Piedmont Community College provide great resources to combat struggles that

college students face. The STAR student program allows students to seek help in all classes, and

advice to be successful in the classroom. CPCC also offers part time jobs that are located on

campus, such as Subway, the bookstore, etc.
