3 Hidden Gems of Bohol That You Should Uncover This 2015

1) Asia's Largest Mangrove Plantation

(photo by Ragde Starr from www.bohol-philippines.com)

With an estimate area of 425 hectares, the Banacon Island Mangrove Forest, located
in the municipality of Getafe, is the biggest in Asia.

2) A Double Barrier Reef?

(Danajon Double Barrier Reef; photo from www.coast.ph)

Did you know that one of the only 6 documented double barrier reefs in the world is
found in the Philippines?

The Danajon Bank is a 90-mile reef system located in the northern part of Bohol. It
attracts both local and foreign divers. One of the entry points of the double barrier reef
is the dive site in Bien Unido, in which youll also find the Underwater Grotto.

3) Awesome Waterfalls

The Can-umantad Falls is located 10 kilometers away from the main road of Cadijay,
Bohol. It is as majestic as the more famous Pagsanjan waterfalls found in Laguna.
The word can-umantad is derived from the Visayan term kan-oman, which means
60 feet.

1| Anda Beaches

beach and a beaches east coast

I love beaches, especially if they look like the ones in the Philippines. However, I dont
enjoy when it comes to share my space with hundreds of tourists, as it happens on
Alona Beach.

And I bet you know Alona Beach on Panglao Island, but you havent heard about the
stunning white sand beaches in Anda, on the east coast of Bohol. Am I right? Well, let
me just tell you the beaches there have nothing to envy to Panglao beaches! Powdery
white sand, turquoise water, palms and fresh coconut to cool you down. How does it
sound?

Anda gets less tourists but has not less charm. If youre looking for something a little
bit out of the tourists path, then you should definitely check it out! And dont forget to
include Quinale Beach in your visit

2| Alicia Hills

AliciaHills

The Chocolate Hills might be Bohols star attractions, but are not the only impressive
hills on the island (also, it is not possible to hike on them!). Not to mention how busy
and crowded they get. Frankly speaking, I found the hills in Alicia much more
spectacular than the Chocolate Hills.

The hills Im talking about can be accessed from the municipality of Alicia, on the east
side of Bohol. When I first got there, I felt like if I was back in New Zealand: endless
hills, a track among them, beautiful landscape, nobody else except us. It was just
more hot, but hey, I came to the Philippines for the sun!

We hiked to the very top at sunset time and enjoyed a 360-degree view over the sea
and the east coast of Bohol. A lovely day actually.

3| Candijay Rice Terraces

explore bohol the local way traveltobealive hidden gems chocolate hills panglao
beach candijay rice terraces

Youve probably heard about the rice terraces in Banaue (near Manila) and
bookmarked those for your upcoming trip to the Philippines, but if you think that you
could only see such spectacular rice terraces there think again, because Candijay will
prove you wrong.

The whole drive across the fields is a very scenic one and once you get to the parking
area the view gets even better. To get the best out of your visit explore the
surroundings and walk through the fields and when it gets too warm for you to keep
going ask directions to the waterfall, follow the steps down and enjoy a close view of it.
Its a beautiful place to cool down a little bit and maybe jump in the water for a
refreshing bath!

Cebu Taoist Temple was a quintessential stop for Cebus visitors in the 1980s,
drawing flocks of tourists every day. But with the upsurge of countless of different
attractions in Cebu, this elaborate shrine has somewhat become lost in the radar of
many travelers.

Nevertheless, its a worthy stopover for any Juan visiting in Cebu, especially to those
who are longing for a quick break away from the relentless energy and buzz of the
countrys urban jungles. Evoking a sense of peace, Cebu Taoist Temple has a

Its a private owned park and a very best one you may add. But since the place is
quite far from the city it hasnt been too publicized.

Okay, of course, Dleonors scenery is very awesome.

MIMAROPA

The MIMAROPA region is home to a diverse array of tourist destinations. From

natural and man-made attractions to cultural and historical sites, its five island
provinces Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and
Palawan will cater to any kind of traveler. Its white sand beaches and rich marine
biodiversity gives way to various activities such as scuba diving, island hopping,
snorkeling, and trekking.

The Apo Reef Natural Park in Occidental Mindoro is known as the countrys diving
mecca. Tourists can swim with the fish and see the worlds second largest coral reef
system up close.

On the other hand, Oriental Mindoro, one of the countrys emerging ecotourism sites,
has several islets with picturesque landscapes. Most notable is Puerto Galera, which
is part of the Club of Most Beautiful Bays in the World.

Tourists flock to Marinduque during the holy week to experience the Moriones Festival
but the Lenten Capital of the Philippines, also known as the Heart of the Philippines
because of the islands shape, has much more to offer. Tourists can explore the
insides of different caves.

Romblon, the Marble Capital of the country, has many historical sites. Aside from this,
the Looc Bay Marine Sanctuary in Tablas hosts more than a hundred marine species
(fish, corals, clams, lobsters, and turtles) and will surely give tourists a unique
experience.

Lastly, but certainly not the least, is Palawan the countrys last ecological frontier.
Known around the world for its scenic destinations, the island is consistently
mentioned in lists of worlds best destinations. The Puerto Princesa Underground
River, for example, was voted as one of the new seven wonders of the world. Since
2014, international travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler, has consistently named
Palawan as the best island in the world.

Since 2010, the countrys tourism industry has steadily grown, posting a compounded
annual growth rate of 8.77% in international visitor arrivals from the years 2010 to
2015, according to DOT. The thriving tourism industry has provided jobs and a steady
source of income to many Filipinos. In 2015 alone, DOT estimates the tourism
industry to have generated 4.99 million in employment a figure that constituted
12.7% of the national employment and 227.62 billion in revenue, just from
international visitors. In 2016, the Philippine tourism industry continued to grow as it
almost breached the six million arrival mark with 5.96 million recorded international
visitors, around 1.8 million of whom were estimated to have visited the MIMAROPA
region. This, compared to 2015s 5.36 million visitor arrivals, showed an 11.31%
growth rate. The industrys total earnings, amounting to 230.13 billion, also grew by
1.11%.

Given the industrys immense potential to drive inclusive growth, tourism development
has been included as one of the main thrusts of MIMAROPAs Regional Development
Plan. www.visitmimaropa.ph was developed in support of this. The memorandum of
agreement between DOST-MIMAROPA and DOT-MIMAROPA was signed during the
Regional Development Council Meeting held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan on
March 3, 2017. Also present at the signing were governors Mario Gene J. Mendiola,
Alfonso V. Umali Jr., Eduardo C. Firmalo, and Jose C. Alvarez.
